Housemaster’s Welcome Congratulations on being a boarder! You are in for an experience that will remain with you forever. You will make life long friends, gain new skills and be part of the legacy of Middlemore House. In 1979 the Headmaster made the momentous and highly successful decision to introduce girls at King's in 1980. Following similar trends in Australia and Britain, requests from Old Collegians who had daughters they wished to send to their old school and the threat of closure of some Auckland boarding schools it was decided to bring in the first 15 girls to the then Forms 6 and 7. These 15 formed the nucleus of the 125 that were eventually enrolled by 2005. Today Middlemore is a dynamic and exciting home away from home for up to 65 boarders. From 2016 we welcomed year 11 girls into the newly renovated extension which included a house managers residence. We aim to make Middlemore as comfortable, safe and welcoming as we can. To create this environment we depend upon each girl taking responsibility for her actions which will, in the intimate boarding setting, have an impact on others. We expect that girls respect each other, respect each others property and the boarding house. This handbook is a very useful guide to the daily routines, procedures and policies of Middlemore which will help each girl become familiar with how we run Middlemore and consequently make the process of becoming a ‘Middlemorian’ that much easier. We understand that boarding takes some girls a bit of getting used to, especially in term one. It helps to get involved with extra-curricular activities so girls are kept busy and don't have too much time to think about being homesick. We encourage girls to take a sport, get involved in house sport competitions and also try a new activity, however achieving a balance of activities and keeping up with WE AIM TO HAVE A COMFORTABLE, schoolwork needs to be taken into consideration. ACCEPTING AND POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT IN MIDDLEMORE SO THAT WE CAN WORK We do aim to make Middlemore comfortable and homely, TOGETHER TO CREATE A SUPPORTIVE so girls staying in at the weekends do have an option of UNIT OF SISTERHOOD THAT RESPECTS attending set weekend activities with the boy boarders EACH OTHER, OUR STRENGTHS AND THE or they can just relax, catch up on homework and TRADITIONS OF THE HOUSE - perhaps go out for a shopping trip or ice-cream with the MIDDLEMORE VISION 2015 DEVELOPED tutor on duty. Girls are free to use the facilities such as BY YEAR 13S the pool and running track during the weekends. Overall, welcome to the Middlemore family. We are looking forward to getting to know you and supporting you in the best you can be for your time here at King’s College. Mrs Nichola Hayes Housemaster, 2012 - present.

Communication Communication between House Staff, the College parents and students is very important. In Middlemore we have some set procedures for communicating information. You can expect from us: Regular newsletters from the Housemaster which includes information about upcoming events to do with the House. Phone calls or emails from the Housemaster if a girl is causing concern within the boarding house or up at school. Prep commences at 7.00 pm with the 1st session lasting until 7.55 pm. At 7.55 pm there will be a 5 minute Prep break. The Prep break is designed to allow students to have a ‘comfort stop’, swap notes and obtain material from other students without disturbing their study. The 2nd session of Prep begins at 8.00 pm and continues until 9pm. Year 13 may close their doors during the second session but if another student is with them, the door must remain fully open. It is a quiet time during the Prep session (conversation with others is not permitted) and girls may not move from their rooms without the permission of the Prefect on duty or Duty Staff. Cellphones may not be used during Prep for any reason. Failure to comply will result in the confiscation of your phone/ s for a period of time with the permission of your parents. Girls with computers may use these during Prep time but only for prep-related subjects. Computers will be confiscated if they are being misused. Late Prep will be available, at the discretion of the Duty Staff, on request.
