During the second week of holidays, I participated in the annual Maths Camp held by the Maths Association Victoria along with 23 lucky Year 10 students from across Regional Victoria. Due to COVID-19, the Maths Camp this year was way different. We were told that it was usually held in the CBD in Melbourne but this time it was held virtually, through Zoom. It was a blast. I met a lot of like-minded students who, at the end of the camp, became my friends. The 24 of us were divided into 6 groups and each of the groups had different roles: coding, economics, research science and engineering. I’ve always been passionate about Maths and knew that I wanted to pursue Maths in the future. During the first and second day of the camp I lost confidence; it felt that everybody was way smarter than me and I almost gave up on my dreams because of it. We had a lot of speakers in different fields. The one that stood out the most for me and stopped me from giving up was Norm Do, a Senior Lecturer from Monash University. In his speech he talked about how there is so much more to Maths on top of the Maths we learn here at school and that school Maths is just like vocabulary in English. The Maths Camp 2020 has been a life changing experience for me and I met a lot of interesting students my age too. How VCAL changed my life The Date of Australia Day Needs To Be Skye Wiseman Year 11 Changed Bronte Ballantine Year 12 Let me tell you a little about myself - my name is Skye and I’m in Year 12 at Phoenix College. I’m 18 and like many young people I have had a An estimated 1.5 million Indigenous Australians inhabited Australia in hard time at school. I’ve been at Phoenix since Year 7 and never really 1788 but by 1901 the population had dropped by a devastating had much interest in school. I definitely haven’t had the easiest life and number. Around 1.4 million Indigenous lives were lost, and the new this has taken a toll on my mental health at times, making it hard to total population estimate became 100,000. In comparison, in 1492 have any sort of interest in school. I gave up in Year 9 and got into there were around 3 to 5 million Native Americans in America, and by heaps of trouble. I definitely wasn’t the easiest student to deal with 1850 there were 250,000. Just an awful bit of history that happened but my teachers never gave up on me. As Year 11 rolled around I was over 100 years ago. But that’s not the same case for Australia is it? No, in VCE and that was a challenging experience for me, but it also made our “awful bit of history” continued up into the 70’s. It wasn’t some me realise that path wasn’t for me. I was then reluctantly put into distant tragic history, it’s recent, and still a major problem in Australia. VCAL and at the beginning I didn’t want to go into it because I was scared and didn’t know what it was. To make things worse for the traditional owners of this land, there’s a day to celebrate what was the destruction of their culture. First of all, Since being in VCAL, I have never loved school more! We are a family let’s get the plain facts out of the way. The 26th of and I owe everything to my wonderful teachers who care for not just January commemorates when the Union Jack was first raised to claim me, but for everyone. They all go above and beyond just to make sure the land after the First Fleet of British ships in 1788 arrived. This was we are okay and that we know we are cared for. You gain lined the shores to protect their land of course. real world skills, friendships and you feel important. We get the same certificate as VCE students just in a different way. The fact is, construction, nursing, hairdressing and so much more! even if not for all people, it still reminds people of the destruction of culture and painful memories. VCAL is about working with people and that is sometimes challenging because not everyone is the same and we really get to know each It doesn’t matter if celebrating Australia Day is not technically other on a different level. It’s challenging to adapt to individual people celebrating the first fleet invading, but it is on the date the flag was first and know people’s boundaries and we will use this in every workplace raised and the beginning of a terrible ordeal for an ancient and and every situation outside school. Avoid running across the road or between cars, especially at the unmanned traffic island at the front of the Sebastopol Campus. Observe road rules if riding a bike or a scooter. Please be aware that a helmet is a legal requirement in Victoria. Parents please be aware: Of parking requirements on our street access points. The BHS Dental facility is a patient car park and should not be used for dropping off or picking up students. Dropping students at the 7-Eleven store puts students directly into traffic. You can assist us to increase student safety by discussing the road laws with younger students. Victoria Police will engage in additional traffic management in and around the school. The College has been working with the Department of Education and Training and the City of Ballarat for some time now to assist in developing a traffic management strategy for our neighbourhood as there has been substantial growth in commuter traffic in recent years. With continued growth in the Delacombe area this trend is likely to continue. PARKING Could all parents/guardians please assist us in not parking in the 7-Eleven car park or the Ballarat Health Services Dental Clinic Carpark for drop-off and pick-up. They have received multiple complaints from service users unable to park in the car park when accessing these locations. We have had reports from 7-Eleven that it is becoming extremely dangerous for children with traffic at these times. We ask again for your cooperation in not using this car park for the dropping off and picking up of students.
