It has been a busy term as indicated by just some of the events and activities highlighted On Monday, a number of brave staff and students underwent in this newsletter. The term has also been demanding and some radical hair cuts to help raise funds for cancer research. challenging for all of us as we try to adjust after the disruption Whilst many had their heads shaved, others had their hair and ongoing change to life from the events of 2020. FICIFOLIA FESTIVAL A cohort of DSC College Captains led by Ms Angela Dong and DSC student musicians led by Pete Brown and Yolette Stewart attended this year’s Ficifolia Festival. The festival was held on the football oval this year with the parade being conducted around the oval. The Warragul Municipal Band led off the afternoon’s proceedings after which DSC student musicians held the stage. All students represented the College beautifully. After an unexpected delay in proceedings, the parade and the festival ran very smoothly. It was a very muggy day and anyone setting up gear (myself, Pete and the student musicians) were exhausted, drenched in sweat and mightily hungry by the end of it all. Pete has received very complimentary comments from the festival conveners about our student musicians and they hope to book us for further gigs. Yolette Stewart 12 DROUIN SECONDARY COLLEGE - E-NEWS

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Over the past 8 weeks, the Environmental Science 400 class has been exploring the four spheres that drive earth from a local perspective, being the Drouin CBD. Our field work has included various locations such as the Alex Goudie Native Park, where we measured the Turbidity, Salinity and Ph levels of the lake, presenting that it was in a good condition. To gain a better understanding of our surroundings and apply our knowledge into real life scenarios we identified forms of erosion on footpaths, roads, fences and houses. Swimming Achievements Griffin Brothers' Swimming Success! Not to be out done, bigger brother Riley took silver in the Boys 16-17year 50m Backstroke and took the Gold in a new event record of 24.96 seconds in the Boys 16-17year 50m Freestyle. Patrick and Riley will now be competing in Queensland at the 2021 Australian Age Championships in April. The Griffin boys have had a hard qualifying period due to COVID-19 and time out of the pool. The boys have trained extremely hard over the past 3 months and have undergone a gruelling swimming competition calendar the past 6 weeks. International Women's Day Monday 8th March was International Women’s Day (IWD), a global day celebrating the achievements of women and marking a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. On Tuesday 9th March, the Year 9 Childhood Adolescent Studies Class organised a whole-school fundraiser to raise money to sponsor young girls in Africa to get an education. The class has specifically chosen a young girl from Zambia, called Patricia, aged 9, who currently lives in extreme poverty and finds it difficult to attend school. Students and staff were encouraged to wear purple accessories with their school uniform eg jewellery, headwear, socks etc. The class also held a BBQ and purple- themed bake sale which, along with other donations, raised nearly $500 to support Patricia for 2021. Year 9 Childhood Adolescent Studies held an IWD celebration in class, learning more about the importance of the day and hearing about the achievements of women who were former DSC students. This year’s IWD theme was #ChooseToChallenge. A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we're all responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day. We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women's achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let's all choose to challenge. 15 DROUIN SECONDARY COLLEGE - E-NEWS
