Presidents Report With the lockdown earlier this year, it has made the Christmas Festive season arrive within a blink and 2020 coming to a close. Before the festive season gets into full swing, we'd like to take a moment to thank you for your loyalty and support in 2020, especially in such a challenging year. We wish everyone a safe and happy festive season. It has been a challenging year and we are not out of the woods with relation to COVID-19 and the impact it has on our club and community. Further to the pandemic our city is still recovering from the dramatic downpour in early November and our team have been reaching out to members and community to check on people’s wellbeing. We did notice that we are still missing some up to date contact details and please ask that you contact us with changes to ensure the database is current. As we have seen with many of the business around the country, the return to normal has been far from the way it was. We have become cautious and protective, which may not have been a bad change… But! It does mean continue to ask members and visitors to continue being patient with our team. We are in a very different environment to the one prior to the lockdown. We are monitoring our financial expenditure closely will keep making adjustments to hours and staffing as needed. It is exciting to announce a new initiative for 2021 – Volunteer of the Month. This is to congratulate and celebrate our members who keep the community charities in operation. We as Executive Committee take on our roles on as volunteers for the greater good of the club. Over the past few years the liability on these positions has deterred many people from becoming involved. So I ask that you please nominate members of the Napier RSA that volunteer either at the club or in the community, it is these volunteers that inspire us and the next generation. The two months between publications isn’t ideal and we are aiming to ensure that the magazine is available each month. The information and updates that is shared in the magazine is both enjoyed and helpful to members and the community. The editor has asked that if you wish to submit stories, information or jokes please send via email: reception@rsanapier.co.nz To all of the teams of Staff in the Clubrooms, Restaurant and Taradale Tavern, thank you for all of your hard work throughout the year. As our tradition the Norfolk Lounge Restaurant will be closed for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Napier RSA Clubrooms will be closed on Christmas Day. We appreciate that we do get many enquiries to open for a Christmas lunch, this to our teams is a family day. We want them to enjoy this time with their families and friends while we are closed. On behalf of the Executive and Staff I wish all a safe and Merry Christmas. John Purcell QSM JP Napier RSA President
A Portrait Exhibition by Denise Baynham This photographic exhibition is the work of artist – Denise Baynham. The exhibition tells the story of Operation Grapple through the words of the veterans who were there. Operation Grapple was a series of nuclear tests conducted in the mid- Pacific by the British Government from May 1957 – September 1958. The New Zealand Government provided assistance by sending a Royal New Zealand Navy survey ship HMNZS Lachlan to survey the two islands that were chosen as the sites for testing, and two frigates: HMNZS Rotoiti and Pukaki to assist during the tests. The portraits are to honour and recognise the veterans – this is their story. Opens in the Temporary Gallery Saturday 19th September until mid-December, 2020. Free admission: 10am – 5pm – 7 days a week. Please note: The exhibition includes sensitive themes and may not be suitable for young children. Armistice Day 2020 Thank you to all of our guest speakers, guests and members who were able to participate in the commemorations of Armistice Day 2020. The speakers this year highlighted some similarities of the influenza pandemic following armistice to our day now. A key speaker was the winner of this year’s speech contest Amelia Otto who delivered her speech with heart and passion. A pleasant surprise were the speeches from our local Napier City Council Councilors in reference to the Napier War Memorial and the passion they carry to ensure we do restore and create a memorial that honours those who gave everything.

We argued the point that as a travel club we needed to pre-purchase tickets, buses and accommodation and to cover any other contingencies, this was to no avail. A contingency has now arisen. Last November we purchased tickets to the tattoo in Palmerston North for March 2020. Due to COVID-19 this was cancelled and we applied a refund. We have refunded to our members but our club is facing a financial loss of $2700 due to Ticket Rocket going into liquidation. We have contacted the liquidators to see what will happen. On a happier note 49 members enjoyed a trip on 18 September to Giltedge Alpacas at Poukawa followed by lunch at the Patangata Tavern. As it was rather wet we had to forgo a trip to Jan Gosling Sculptor in Waipawa. Yesterday 32 of us had an early start to Fielding to their huge Craft fair where we could browse or shop til you dropped. Jack is having a bad day… He tried to button his shirt and the button fell off. He picked up his briefcase and the handle fell off. He went to open the door and the doorknob fell off. I've sure gotten old! Now he’s afraid to pee I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But, thank goodness, I still have my driver's license.
Always Remember This: You don't stop laughing because you grow old, You grow old because you stop laughing! Parenting tip: When you lose your children in the house turn off the Wi-fi. They’ll come out immediately. Your neighbours may even drop by as well. Sometimes, when my husband has a day off. I like to bring the TV remote with me to work Most people write Congrats because they don’t know the spelling of congrajulashions. Just saw the little boy next door licking whip cream of the cat. Pretty sure he heard something he shouldn’t have..
A friendly reminder that both the Napier RSA and Norfolk Lounge Restaurant are closed on Christmas Day
