Page 4 T h e T a t t l e r PRESIDENTS REPORT Presidents AGM Report 2018 (Kevin Ponsonby) This report covers the period from the 2017 AGM until my resignation on the 21st of May 2018. Shortly after the AGM our Vice President, Chris Gray, attended the National Conference in Wellington and Tuaine and I enjoyed a well-deserved break in the Cook Islands for three weeks. Chris will report on the National Conference in his report. The lead up to Christmas was again a very busy trading period for the RSA, and this is essential to cover the post New Year period when trading is very quiet for several weeks. This is typical across the whole hospitality sector. A couple of years ago our trading was enhanced by construction busi- ness’s hosting their Christmas functions at the RSA, but sadly this has de- clined over the last two years following the post earthquake boom. In January we had the pleasure of hosting the Vietnam veterans from Victor 2 Company for their 50th anniversary reunion. From the comments I heard from attendees the reunion was a great success. The Vietnam Veterans have stepped into the very large shoes that the K force Veterans occupied at this RSA over the preceding decades. This is most obvious when looking at the role of Welfare Officers at both the Papanui and Canterbury District level. As always, the Vietnam Veterans are very welcome at the Papanui RSA. With regard to the K Force Veterans, I’m sure that members are aware that because of their advancing years they have ceased to meet as a formal group but will continue to meet on an ad hoc basis at the Papanui RSA. For several decades they held major leadership roles in this RSA and were a sizeable group at our functions. It’s always a pleasure to read an insightful letter to the Editor of the Press by Forbes Taylor, particularly about matters Korean. February was a particularly difficult month for me with both RSA and personnel incidents proving to be stressful and debilitating. My wife, Tuaine, had another medical set back. As I have stated on previous occasions I had no intention to stay as long as my predecessor and my personal goal was five years. This goal was obviously based on the fact that I would have to convince you, the members, to vote for me.
October 2018 Page 5 The Poppy Collection again suffered from our ability to put the maximum number of boots on the ground and our collection was at the bottom of our 47 to 53-thousand-dollar range. The ANZAC Day commemorations at Papanui were again well attended by the veteran community and the general population of North West Christchurch. There are many important facets to the ANZAC Day commemorations and making a strong connection to the community in which we live and operate is one of them. As I have stated in my three ANZAC Day speeches the Papanui RSA is not an island. It is part of the Papanui community and the Papanui community is part of the Papanui RSA. After ANZAC Day my health had a further set back and I took a fortnight’s break to have a rest and ponder my future. It was during this period that it was apparent to me that I was not delivering the standard of leadership that is required by the office that I held, and that my continuing on would do more harm than good. At the time I’m writing this report I am ignorant of the trading result for the 2017/18 year, but I anticipate that it will be another tough year. A personal wish I had upon becoming President was to pay off the RSA’s mortgage to the Christchurch City Council but the difficult trading years and massive insurance increases following the earthquakes made this impossible. It was marvellous to be able to work with my colleagues in the local branch of the Royal NZ Naval Association to park the remaining $100,000 of mortgage with them in a long-term debenture arrangement at a modest 3% interest only payment. This is a long-term arrangement, but if our trading position improves we could pay it off at any time that suits the RSA. Should the Royal NZ Naval Association need the funds they have the ability to ask for repayment in part or in total. The Papanui RSA has excellent facilities located in central Papanui with good parking and has very a very low debt to equity ratio. It is high debt and poor cash flow that has lead to the demise of many RSA’s. During my Presidency it has been a difficult trading period in the hospitality industry My main regret is that my ill health has prevented me achieving so much more. I do note, and so should the membership, that the change of command has been completed seamlessly and the Executive, led by Chris Gray, has continued to operate as planned. This is obvious in two main areas. The renewed vigour to improve the cabinetry and the display of memorabilia in the Charles Upham room, and the new management regime of the pokies. The new cabinetry will be paid for by separate fund raising and will not detract from our trading position.
Page 6 T h e T a t t l e r To all those who have served with me on the Executive I wish to extend my thanks for a job well done. You have brought a wide range of skill and experience to assist in the governance of this RSA. To all the staff, and in particular our Manager Wendy Clark, thank you for your loyal service to this RSA. It has been one of the highlights of my life to be your President for three and a half years. Thank you. Kevin Ponsonby Teenui Village, Atiu, Cook Islands Presidents AGM Report 2018 (Chris Gray) It is my pleasure to present my report. It was with regret that I accepted Kevin’s resignation due to ill health and would like to acknowledge Kevin’s term as president. He took on the role in difficult trading times which was a challenge. Kevin along with Tuaine were a great asset to our club and I wish them well for their future plans. As you can see from the Financials the RSA has suffered a trading loss again you can be assured that we have kept our expenses under control and there has been no unnecessary spending and we continue to pay all our accounts on time. I can advise that all not for profits clubs and society are struggling as the discretionary dollar is just not available. Poppy Day collection was down on previous years, but I believe this is a sign of the times. I would like to thank our local community for their donations, every bit helps our Veteran Community. I would like to acknowledge Peter Dunell our Welfare Support person for his hard work during the year. This year we will be commemorating Armistice Day on Sunday the 11 November. 11 November 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. After four terrible years, the First World War finally came to an end with the signing of an Armistice between the Allied Powers and Germany on 11 November 1918. The fighting ceased at 11 a.m. – the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. I would like to thank the following
October 2018 Page 7 Alison Smith who continues to produce a high-class publication of the Tattler and would appreciate interesting articles from you Our staff I would like to thank all staff for the hard work they do in the Canteen, Bar and Office. Thank you to our General Manager Wendy who does such a lot for the RSA. Thank you to Ron Mayell, Colin Rae and Bruce TeKooro who are not standing for re-election. Ron a life member and stalwart of this RSA has served on the executive since 1994, becoming President in 1996 until 1998. Colin Rae has served on the executive since 2015. Bruce TeKooro our current Patron one year. Thank you to the members who regularly support your RSA, we have a warm friendly environment and I would encourage all members to utilise the facilities if our 1275 members all came through the door twice a year purchased a drink and a meal how much different would our financials be. The continued success of Papanui RSA your RSA is in your hands. It will be a great pleasure to be your President for the next twelve months. And I look forward to your continual support. Thank you for your attendance this morning and I now ask that my report be accepted. Sunday Dinner $20 pp—5.00pm—8.00pm 3 Courses Soup, Roast of the Day Served with Seasonal Vegetables
Page 8 T h e T a t t l e r Entertainment Hi fellow members, Spring is definitely here and living up to its usual mixture of stunning days as well as cold ones. Today was an awesome one. The Michelia shrubs in the gardens in front of the RSA are in full flower; they look gorgeous and have a lovely perfume. Take time to have a look at them next time you are coming in the front door to have a drink or a meal and remember to check out the specials board in the Canteen. The AGM: This was held on the 29th September 2018 at 9.30am; sadly, we had a very disappointing turnout, about 57 of our 1200 members turned up! To those who came, thank you. We have two new committee members this year, Ricky and Eddie and welcome them to the team. Together we will work alongside you, the members, to make the RSA the place to be. The members of the RSA are one big team and team stands for Together Everyone Achieves More. We, the members, are all responsible for ensuring the RSA is in good health. Please come along and make use of our wonderful facilities and tell all your friends what we have to offer. A place to catch up with friends over a drink, have a meal, we have rooms for events, functions and meetings, catering is available just to name a few. Quiz Nights: We still have the same 20 to 25 people coming every week, it would be great to see some new faces. Start time 7pm, so you need to arrive about 6.30- 6.45pm to get settled before the first question. Get your teams together now and come for some fun. Please contact the office on 352 1185 if you have any questions or just turn up on the night. All welcome. Saturday night raffles and happy hour: The raffles start at 5pm, hap- py hour at 5.30pm, and a chance to go in the monthly draw for a $50 RSA voucher. Come along and support your RSA, have some fun and good company as well as a chance to win a prize. The Canteen is open if you want to have a snack or stay and have dinner. Fabulous food! Thursday nights: Club night. Still a great night to win a prize or two! We have great raffles available. The meat raffle has awesome prizes which I can vouch for as I have won a few and we also have the cash
October 2018 Page 9 The meat raffles are very popular, so if you miss out on a ticket in the first one there is a second one. Once again, I remind you all that this is your RSA, your support is essential; we cannot make it without you! We look forward to seeing you here, especially if you are a new member or someone who hasn’t been for a while. I am off for a week’s leave and heading to the Marlborough Sounds in the morning for some R & R so you won’t see me around this week, but I will be back. I look forward to a really good year at the RSA. Let’s make it happen. Take care of yourselves and each other. Drive safely, enjoy the spring time and remember to check on your friends and neighbours. Kind Regards Lyn Papanui RSA Travel Section After 18 years of travel around various RSA`s in the North and South Islands not forgetting Stewart Island it has been decided that time is up and now time to close travels . October 2018 Page 11 NAVALESE BITS & BYTES October is upon us already. It will soon be the silly season. I notice Christmas goodies on the shop shelves all ready to go. September weather a bit up and down but not to bad. No doubt it will warm up and we can enjoy the summer. Once again not a lot occurring Navy wise in our area. We have our AGM on the 2nd October and as with the RSA AGM to my knowledge there is nothing of a serious nature to be discussed. Good eh!. Upcoming events are our Trafalgar Dinner 1800 on Saturday 13th October and there will be a service to mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day on 11th November. This will be held on the parade ground at the RSA commencing at 1100. This is an important date on our calendar and your attendance would be welcome. Once again to any of our members who are not feeling the best we hope that you will be feeling better soon and our congratulations to any birthdays you may be celebrating. Hope you have great day. RNZN WW2 HISTORY - CONT HMS Neptune disaster. The worst disaster involving New Zealand naval personnel occurred with- in the Royal Navy when HMS Neptune which had been earmarked to join the RNZN sank with the loss of all but one of its crew after hitting a mine off Tripoli in December 1941. 150 New Zealand seamen were killed. A series of secondment schemes greatly expanded the New Zealand presence in the Royal Navy from 1941. In all 7000 New Zealanders would serve on attachment and they were to be found spread through British warships in every theatre. Many took part in the all-important battle of the Atlantic, and many of the 4700 serving in 1944 were involved in operations connected with the D-Day landings at Normandy on 6th June. About 800 New Zealanders served as naval aviators in the Fleet Air Arm. In May 1944 they comprised 7% of the arms personnel. Among those who made their mark were James McDonald, who commanded motor torpedo boats, Archibald Richardson, who was recommended for a posthumous Victoria Cross for his August 1944 attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in a Norwegian fiord, and Commander 'Kiwi' Smith, a midget submariner who took part in a celebrated raid on Singapore harbour in 1945. In New Zealand the RNZN was involved in local defence measures, initially in response to intrusions by German armed merchant raiders.
T h e T a t t l e r Page 12 T h e T a t t l e r A minefield accounted for the trans-pacific liner Niagara in the Hauraki Gulf in June 1940. Dealing with enemy mine fields could be dangerous. On 14 May 1941 the minesweeper HMS Puriri sank after hitting a mine, with the loss of five seamen, the only New Zealand naval personnel to fall victim to enemy action in New Zealand waters in two world wars. October 2018 Page 13 The Health and Wellbeing of Current and Former Service Personnel Otago University Veteran Research We are seeking ALL CURRENT AND FORMER SERVICE PERSONNEL to take part in this survey to learn more about your health and wellbeing. Most service personnel are doing OK health wise and socially, but there is growing evidence that some are not: they are in social strife or developing health problems, or both. The events that trigger these problems may have occurred way in the past, but we need to be ready to recognize these problems now. We want to look at post-traumatic stress injury, but also complaints called ‘multi symptom illness’, MSI, first recognized after the Gulf War. The plan is to recognize ‘at risk’ individuals as soon as possible through ‘early warning’ signs that all is not as it should be health-wise or socially. These warning signs or patterns of ill health need to be recognized in the community by GPs and through social support networks. Most of all, we need to make sure that community support is in place and, yes, resourced. All part of the plan, and it won’t happen overnight, but it will happen. So look upon the survey as a chance to have your voice heard. The NZDF are also supporting it, but will not have access to the data. Everyone who completes the survey will enter a prize draw for a New Zealand ‘weekend break for two’ if that helps! To participate come to the Papanui office for the forms or go online at otago.ac.nz/veteranshealth If you would like more information, please contact Dave McBride on either 03 479 7208, txt 027 253 5451 or email david.mcbride@otago.ac.nz Dave is a LtCol in the RNZAMC and a reservist, but is carrying out this

T Thh ee T Taa tt tt ll ee r r Page 22 CMT/NS NEWS Last Sunday members and friends of the CMT/NS Association held a "Welcome to Spring" luncheon at The Canteen, Papanui RSA. 41 persons were in attendance and enjoyed a lovely three course lunch consisting of Pumpkin soup, Roast Beef and vegetables followed by Pavlova, fruit salad and cream. All this for the price of $20.00 per head. As advertised those attending were to get a surprise on the day, this was that as they arrived they were each given a $10.00 note. The President explained once everyone was there that the committee had decided that as the association was in a good financial position those members who support the functions should be rewarded, hence the $10.00 refund which made the three course lunch a very cheap meal out. He also indicated something like this could occur in the future but just when and where will not be advertised. Most functions held are subsidised in some way but it was felt this was a more tangible way to express the committee's appreciation of the support they get from members. As usual there were a couple of raffles held and everyone had a great time. Our next function will be the Christmas Luncheon to be held this year at The Barn at the Vintage Car Club grounds, McLeans Island. This venue was chosen after a number of members approached the committee after the success of the picnic held there earlier this year. The luncheon will be held on Sunday 2 December and further details will be included in the next News Flash. Joke Time: Up Walgett way, one evening, in that truck-stop diner just on the north side of town, a truck driver parks his big rig outside, comes inside and orders a T-bone steak with chips. His meal had just arrived and he is just tucking in, when there is the roar of motorbikes arriving outside. Presently, three enormous Hells Angels come in and, hungry, simply help themselves to the steak and chips, passing the chunk of meat between them, daring him to protest. Without a word, the truckie gets up, walks out and climbs into his truck. Watching him go, the head honcho of the Hells Angels sneers to his men, and the waitress: "Either he's a coward or he just can't fight." "I tell you what," says the waitress, looking out the window, "he can't drive, either. He just backed over three motorbikes."

Page 28 T h T h e e T a T a t t t t l l e e r r The Dog Linda Robinson was very thirsty so she went into a café. The was an old woman in the café. She was sitting near the door at a table. At her feet, under the table, there was a small dog. Linda bought a glass of lemonade and some cookies. She sat down at the table next to the old woman. The old woman sat quietly. She looked lonely, Linda decided to be kind and talk to the old woman. “It is very hot today,” she said. “Yes, but it is nice inside here,” replied the old woman. Linda looked at the dog and asked, "Does your dog like people.” The woman answered, “Oh! Yes! She loves people.” Linda was terribly afraid of dogs so she asked, “Does your dog bite?” The old woman smiled and said, “NO! My dog is very tame. She is even afraid of cats!” Linda took a cookie in her hand and reached under the table. She put it near the dogs mouth. But the dog didn’t bite the cookie, she bit her hand! Linda jumped up, spilling her lemonade. She screamed, “I thought you said, your dog didn’t bite.” The old woman looked at Linda and then at the dog.
