Page 4 T h e T a t t l e r PRESIDENTS REPORT June certainly has been a miserable month weather wise here’s hoping to July being a much brighter month. The last month was certainly a learning curve for me in my role of President but one of the high lights is to announce that at the June meeting the executive unanimously decided to appoint Lyn Anthony as Vice President. We have struck teething problems again on Thursday nights with playing of the Last Post but I can assure you all that we have sorted this issue. The sports afternoon held last month was a great afternoon enjoyed by all that attended we would like to hold theses afternoons every three months hope to see you all at the August afternoon. We have put together a Pool and Snooker competition; games will be played on Tuesday nights from 7.00pm – 9.00pm currently 17 names of those interested. An approached was made earlier in the year to Air Recuse and Community Services regarding the RSA’s gaming machines. Gaming has been trading at a loss now for several years proving a large expense to the RSA. The cost to replace each game is around the $15,000.00 with an additional $60,000.00 in compliance costs. The outcome from this approach is the Executive have accepted a three-year contract offer from the Air Recuse and Community Services Trust to replace the gaming machines with modern games and they will be responsible for all the li- censing costs. The RSA will receive a venue payment calculated on a weekly turnover. The Executive see this as a win win for everyone. Some of you will already have noticed the new stools in the gaming area. RSA Auction night on the 25th August starting at 7.00pm the proceeds being used to replace the memorabilia cabinetry in the Charles Upham room, I encourage you all to attend this fun night. Lynne Chaney and Friends will also be entertaining. If you have any goods you would like to donate to this cause, please drop of to the office.

Page 6 T h e T a t t l e r JOKE TIME: Three women are about to be executed for crimes. One’s a brunette, one’s a redhead, and one’s a blonde. Two guards bring the brunette forward, and the executioner asks if she has any last requests. She says no, and the executioner shouts, “Ready … Aim…” Suddenly the brunette yells, “Earthquake!!” Everyone is startled and looks around. She manages to es- cape. The angry guards then bring the redhead forward, and the executioner asks if she has any last requests. She says no, and the executioner shouts, “Ready … Aim …” The red- head then screams, “tornado!!” Yet again, everyone is startled and looks around. She too escapes execution. By this point, the blonde has figured out what the others did. The guard brings her forward, and the executioner asks if she has any last requests. She also says no, and the executioner shouts, “Ready … Aim …” The blonde shouts, “fire!!” Sunday Dinner $20 pp—5.00pm—8.00pm 3 Courses Soup, Main Course, Dessert The United Forces Lodge is collecting the square plastic bag/bread ties for one of our Northern colleagues. Constantly color your picture gray, and your picture will always be bleak. Try adding some bright colors to the picture by including humor, and your picture begins to lighten up.

T h e T a t t l e r Page 12 T h e T a t t l e r The horrors of war to community service A war veteran who saw the horrors of atomic devastation in Japan and was involved in raids behind enemy lines has died. Sandy Brunt, who was later awarded the MBE for his ser- vices to the community in Christchurch, he was 99. Mr Brunt led the volunteer team at the Cathedral Square police kiosk for 13 years. He was involved in its inception in 1986, and the ‘Speak Up’ campaign which encouraged Sandy Brunt people to report crime earned him an MBE. His long-time friend, retired Detective Inspector Mal Griebel, said Mr Brunt was the ideal man to run the volunteer team because he had a great passion for justice. He was one of the nicest, most decent people he’d ever met, said Mr Griebel. “He willingly gave of his time to help the community, his family, his church, the New Zealand Police and, even when he was in his late 80s, visited the elderly and the lonely.” Mr Brunt joined the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy Volunteer Re- serve in 1940, serving in the Fleet Air Arm from 1941-45. His first assignment was an 18-month stint with an Albacore Squadron – the 826 – based in Egypt. The biplanes were mainly involved in desert operations, dropping flares to pin- point enemy targets for RAF bombers. His Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for his part in an attack on an enemy convoy while operating from a temporary airstrip behind enemy lines in the desert. Returning to Britain in 1943, Mr Brunt was posted to the 834 Squadron sta- tioned in Exeter, which at the time was operating against enemy motor torpedo boats in the English Channel. Shortly after the 834 Squadron was transferred to Ireland, where they “worked up” the aircraft carriers HMS Hunter and HMS Battler before being sent for six months into the Red Sea to conduct anti-submarine patrols between Aden and Bombay. At the end of June, 1945, he was posted to the HMS Speaker which was part of the British Pacific Fleet for the remainder of World War 2. The HMS Speaker went to Nagasaki and took out prisoners of war from the camps.
July 2018 Page 13 The HMS Speaker went to Nagasaki and took out prisoners of war from the camps. Mr Griebel said he’d heard his friend talk about the experience on just one occasion. “He said when he got there he was appalled at the devastation. He couldn’t grasp the magnitude of what had happened,” recalled Mr Griebel. After returning from the war, he joined the Sumner Cricket Club and went on to play until the age of 49. He had hoped to play until he was 50, but said that when you get to the stage where you “drop all your catches, get no wickets and don’t make any runs, it’s time to give it away.” In 1954 he married Rona and shortly after built a house on Kinsey Tce in Sumner. The couple lived there until the February 22, 2011, earthquake. Mrs Brunt said her husband was a handyman who was “capable of doing anything.” They raised two children – a son Tony and daughter Jenny. An active member of the Sumner Lifeboat Institution for several years, he went on to establish the Sumner Lifeboat Replacement Fund and was a charter member of the Christchurch South Lions Club in 1966. Tony said in a speech at his father’s 90th birthday that Mr Brunt was a man of cour- age and conviction. “Someone who set himself goals and worked diligently to reach them. But they have seldom been selfish goals. It’s fair to say that most of dad’s energies have gone to making other people’s lives better.” Mr Brunt was born on August 14, 1918, and died on May 21. ___________________________________________________________ The Kaiapoi President Neill Price would like to extend an invitation to the Pa- panui RSA members to be part of the special Seafarer's Remembrance Ser- vice to be held on the 15th July. T h e T a t t l e r Page 22 T h e T a t t l e r CMT/NS NEWS The Annual General Meeting of the Association was held on Sunday 17 June 2018 in the Charles Upham Room at the Papanui RSA and attended by 30 members. The President asked for a minute's silence for those members who had passed away during the year and this was followed by the ODE. The President also mentioned that a number of our members have gone into care or are finding it difficult to attend the events being organised. The committee is very aware of this and do their best to accommodate everyone. The Association is in a strong financial position and there is no need to increase the annual subscription and donations will be made to several charities. The President then thanked the committee for their work for the benefit of the Association throughout the year and also Alison Smith and Mary Allfrey for their assistance in supporting the committee. He wished all those who are unwell a speedy recovery and reminded them that the Association will pay for the first emergency trip to hospital at the same time suggesting that members consider joining The Friends of St. John as you will not then be charged for ambulance services. The committee was re-elected in block and the President asked for further nominations as there were two vacancies. Margaret Craig and Mary Allfrey put their names forward and were duly elected. Colin Hanson was elected as Patron for the next 2 years. The Canteen provided a most enjoyable morning ten after the close of the meeting. Plans are under way to hold a Mid-Winter Lunch in the near future and a further Associate's Afternoon Tea is planned for late July early August. Joke of the week President Trump is walking out of the White House and heading towards his limo, when a possible assassin steps forward and aims a gun. A secret service agent, new on the job, shouts, "Mickey Mouse!" Miraculously, this startles the would-be assassin and he is, mercifully, captured. Later, the secret service agent's supervisor takes him aside and asks, "What in the world made you shout Mickey Mouse?" Blushing, the agent replies, "I got nervous. I meant to shout Donald, duck!" Secretary: Shirley Aitken
July 2018 Page 23 Christchurch Hospital People heading to Christchurch Hospital will be able to take advantage of a new shuttle service from the start of next month. From 2 July Canterbury District Health Board’s popular hospital shuttle pick-up location will shift from the Deans Avenue car park to Christchurch City Council’s Lichfield Street Car Park building, at 33 Lichfield Street. The CDHB has made the move, in conjunction with the Council, to ensure that hospital visitors and patients can benefit from the brand-new car park facilities at the Lichfield Street Car Park building. It will make for a more pleasant and stress- free parking experience, particularly over the winter months, as the parking is all under cover and well lit. "We set up our original hospital shuttle service back in October 2014 as a tempo- rary stop-gap to ease our hospital parking problems, and we’ve transported nearly one million passengers since then,'' says CDHB Chief Executive David Meates. “We know that parking at the hospital is still very difficult and will remain so until a replacement for the old blue public car park is built. Until that time we will continue to run a hospital shuttle to and from the Lichfield Street Car Park building to en- sure that people get to their hospital appointments on time. "I’m very pleased to announce this great improvement in our service – our thanks to the Council for the opportunity and for working with us towards this solution,'' Mr Meates says. Christchurch City Council Chief Executive Dr Karleen Edwards says the new park- ing arrangement makes perfect sense and she is pleased the Council has been able to assist the CDHB with its parking issues. How to catch the shuttle The shuttle is easy to use. Drive in at 33 Lichfield Street, take a ticket, park any- where there’s a space, and catch a ride to Christchurch Hospital from the waiting area on Level 2A. The shuttle will bring you back to Level 2A after your appointment Pay before you return to your car, and drive out. The parking building has lifts and stairs between all floors. The pay station on the ground floor takes cash and cards or use the pay station on Level 2A for cards only. Prefer to walk? It’s roughly a 10 minute walk from Lichfield Street Car Park building to the hospital. While roadworks are going on, the best route is along Tuam Street.
Page 24 T h T h e e T a T a t t t t l l e e r r – People (and Dogs) supporting People A story from Lorraine Aitken, Local Support Advisor Burnham Hub I recently had the privilege of meeting Ms Michelle Attwood, the Founder of Husky Rescue NZ (info@huskyrescuenz.com), to discuss a fantastic opportunity that may enable another potential layer of support around our people that we are so committed to assisting. Michelle has designed and introduced this valuable service to a number of organisations including, but not limited to: local hospitals, children’s programmes at the International Antarctic Centre and University of Canterbury, by providing her service dogs to be with people who are often in a time of need. Cuddle Line The support that Michelle’s Huskies can provide include the opportunity to sit one on-one-to pat and chat, be on a “cuddle line” or to walk a Husky in tranquil surroundings. Michelle very kindly (and extremely generously) offered our Hub six sessions for those meeting with us who may be in a time of need where the Huskies can add benefit. On 16 May, our very special guests arrived at our Drop in Clinic at the Burnham Hub. Michelle brought two of her rescue Huskies: Arya who is 4 ½ years old and Max who is 2 years old. Once the ladies in the room got over the sight of two extremely beautiful and regal Huskies wandering on in (and being slightly ignored!) – Arya and Max got straight to work. First up, Max went and had a bit of a chat with Brian, but quickly on his heels was Arya who decided she wanted to be in Brian’s company, and as you will see, a very quick bond was established and frankly, Max didn’t get a look in. (Don’t worry, Max has his own great story to tell next up). Max’s Story Max appeared quite happy with Arya’s choice as he had actually made his own choice and set in his sights for some one-on-one company with Ollie. As you can see below, Max “weaselled his way” to where he wanted to be! I must say, I heard no complaints from either party!
July 2018 Page 25 Both Ollie and Brian commented on how relaxing it was to have Arya and Max alongside of them. Both lads felt the stresses of the day dissipate and added value to their time at the Hub. Ollie recommended to us that we should have them back again soon. The Amazing Outcome My observation of the interactions exceeded my expectations to be honest with you. I fully understand the power of cathartic support and contact of and with an animal, however, observing Max and Arya in action was nothing short of amazing. Michelle can be truly proud of these two beauties and how quickly “they sized up the boys”. They got on with what they do best - helping people relax and destress. Two hours passed very quickly and it was time for Arya and Max to head back home with Michelle. We are so grateful to Michelle for her time and support. If you would like to read more on the great work Michelle and her Huskies do every day, or contact her - please email Michelle at: Info@huskyrescuenz.com or log on to www.huskyresucenz.com Did I manage a Hug with a Husky…? You bet I did!
