Toxic BlueGreen Algae Article 2nd January 2019 The commonly occurring Toxic BlueGreen Algae which occurs at the Hartbeespoort dam is part of the Cyanobacteria family, the sub-family is Microcystis, of which several Microcystis species occur at Harties. The Toxic BlueGreen Algae occur at Harties and several other dams in S.A., due to the high levels of nutrients in the water - specifically phosphates and nitrates. The high summer temperatures, wind movement (or lack thereof), low rainfall and dam morphology (shape, depth etc.) - all play a role in the occurrence/flourishing of the Toxic BlueGreen Algae. Cyanobacteria (Microcystis) commonly release toxins – under certain conditions. These are neuro toxins, which are harmful to humans and animals. Several deaths have been reported in S.A. - including bird deaths at Harties, cattle on farms and animals in the Kruger Park. The toxins may cause: skin rashes, eye irritation, vomiting, nausea, fever, muscle and joint pain, possible long-term liver damage with prolonged exposure. To be safe, avoid contact with the scums and the water. People who live or operate a business on the shoreline and are at risk :- during windy conditions, when the wind is blowing towards you – keep shoreline windows and doors closed, turn off air-conditioning, and avoid sitting on the jetty or in the garden. People who work in these circumstances and are at risk :– protective gear should be worn: waders, gloves, face mask, goggles, hat, long-sleeves, life-jacket. All BlueGreen algae blooms in S.A. should be regarded as potentially toxic.
