Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Fremont, CA December 27, 2020 Pastors Message When we find ourselves discouraged, frustrated, or angered by difficulties, we have a choice. We can either stay tuned to our feelings of self-pity, or we can change the chan- nel and tune into God's perspective by thinking of Christ: his sufferings on the cross, his flight to Egypt with Mary and Joseph, the trials his saints and martyrs have endured through the centuries. Tuning into God's point of view doesn't take away the difficulty, but it does give it meaning. None of the Church's canonized saints was born a saint. They were all nor‐ mal people, like us. They inherited the same fallen human nature. They received the same sacraments and doctrine. They also received the same call to holiness, to live in a truly intimate, dynamic friendship with Jesus Christ. But they didn't live sheltered lives - they confronted hardships just like ours. In having to face daily trials, Joseph and Mary weren't the exception. St Patrick was kidnapped and sold into slavery. St Elizabeth of Hungary almost went insane when her husband died of malaria just a few years after their marriage. St Padre Pio of Pietrelcina was crit- icized by his fellow monks, misunderstood by his superiors, and even forbidden by the Vatican from celebrating Mass in public. St Thomas More, a layman and a lawyer, was thrown out of his job by the king, then imprisoned, interrogated, and forbidden from seeing his family. When he still refused to give up his allegiance to Christ, they chopped off his head. St Rita of Cascia wanted to become a nun, but her parents forced her (at the age of 12) to marry a wealthy but violent and abusive local businessman. She suffered his infidelities and abuses for 18 years before he repented on his deathbed. God didn't save these saints from suffering, just as he didn't save his own Son from the cross - rather, God works through the cross. When life throws big or little hardships at us, it is not because God has forgotten us or has it in for us. God permits daily trials on purpose. They are opportunities for us to exercise our faith, to grow into mature, wise, and deeply joyful Christians ‐ to move forward on the road that will make us saints. Fr. Joy Kumarthusseril, mf

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Fremont, CA December 27, 2020 Between Christmas and New Year's there is a special space for Jesus, Mary and Joseph, the ideal Christian family. After more than 2000 years, the life of the Holy Family is still an example for us to imitate in order to be happy. They were three separate people, but in love they were one. That is the secret ingredient that makes a family go outside of themselves and triumph: love. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were three, but on the level of love they were one. That is the greatness of the Mystery of Bethlehem. Love can bring it all together. They were three, but love enabled them to make space for the mysterious hand that guided their family from be- ginning to end, in fortune and misfortune, in all their joys, and struggles. The Holy Family is an example of love and trust in one another. Joseph trusted Mary, Mary trusted Joseph and Jesus trusted them both. Our society and our world have a lot to learn from the Holy Family. We don't usually resolve the activities of our home in love. Here and there threats against family stability start pop- ping up: personal interests, whims, and the desire to experience "something else," the urge to possess, or else the lack of patience, comprehension or fidelity. The Holy Family encourages us to progress in family unity. So many couples are faithful to each other. It is true that a happy family “does not sell” on the front page in newspapers, TV, tabloid magazines or radio. That is nothing new. It didn't really matter to the Holy Fami- ly either. Today we see in them an example of how to confront difficulties, challenges, and suffering. Maybe the most amazing thing about this “first family” is that they were com- pletely guided by God. We should value the irreplaceable role of the Christian family in the transmission of the Faith. In our Catholic families we still need to enkindle the appreciation, desire, and pride for the things of God. How true was that person who said that if the family does not intervene in the future of the Faith, it will be difficult for future generations to know the Jesus born in Bethlehem, who has inspired so much passion, music, writing, art, poetry that were pro- duced in his name. May the contemplation of the Holy Family in Bethlehem raise up in our homes the ideal of a united family. Pope St. John Paul II used to say many times: “The fami- ly that prays together, stays together.” Let us ask the Christ Child for this grace.
