Queen Olivia Lucretia- Bourgeois Connie St. Redfern III: Rainbow Story Time Saturday 19 September @ 1:30 pm A special storytime celebrating diverse families, identity, and embracing who you are. “A Drag Queen, or Drag King, is an entertainer who performs in hyper-gendered or gender-non-conforming clothing, hair and makeup. My principal motivation for being part of Rainbow Story Time in libraries around the Wellington region is to give today’s kids the kind of childhood I wished that I could have had. The knowledge that some little boys like to wear dresses, and play elastics, and play house. We seem to have made some progress with little girls being allowed to play with construction sets and climb trees, but there’s still a stigma about girly boys. Or indeed, little people that are non-binary, that don’t (like myself) fit neatly into the socially prescribed behaviours and attitudes that are matched to the gender as assigned at birth.”-Queen Olivia Page 2 | SEPTEMBER 2020 www.library.mstn.govt.nz
The Wairarapa Archive Among the various characters from early Wairarapa history, few can have been as charismatic and entertaining as the cross-dressing chemist, Robert Gant. London-born, the son of a surgeon, he came to New Zealand in and worked as a chemists’ assistant in Wellington. While there he became very involved with the theatrical scene, usually playing female roles under his stage name, Cecil Riverton. His biggest success came when he played in Gilbert and Sullivan light operas – he was Buttercup in H.M.S. Pinafore, and Ruth in Pirates of Penzance. In 1882 he ventured up to Masterton, where worked for T.G. Mason fort seven years, apart from a few months when he opened his own business. He was also very heavily involved in two passion. He continued his career on the stage and in musical circles, and he developed his photography skills, taking many images of local theatrical and sporting groups. He returned to England for a visit in 1891, and when he came back opened a business in Greytown. He continued with his photography hobby, branching out into taking many images relating to executions. He also seemed to have a fetish for shoes. While in Greytown he met Charlie Haigh, and took many stunning photographs of the young man. In 1899 Gant returned to live in Seatoun, Wellington, although he returned to Greytown in 1905 and ran his shop again. When he once again returned to Wellington in 1908, Haigh joined him, working on the fabric counter at the D.I.C.. He was also very involved in musical entertainments in the city. Robert Gant died in Wellington in 1936. Charles Haigh died in 1941. (06) 370 6253 SEPTEMBER 2020 | Page 3
