Music before the Service Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder - D. Buxtehude Introit O sacred head sore wounded – J.S. Bach sung by the Square Mile Choral Scholars The Gathering Please stand. Hymn It is a thing most wonderful, Almost too wonderful to be, That God's own Son should come from heaven, And die to save a child like me. And yet I know that it is true: He chose a poor and humble lot, And wept, and toiled, and mourned, and died, For love of those who loved him not. But even could I see him die, I could but see a little part Of that great love, which, like a fire, Is always burning in his heart. It is most wonderful to know His love for me so free and sure; But 'tis more wonderful to see My love for him so faint and poor. And yet I want to love thee, Lord; O light the flame within my heart, And I will love thee more and more, Until I see thee as thou art. W Walsham How (1823-97) Tune: Herongate Welcome and Introduction In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen. 5
The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Please sit or kneel. Prayers of Confession Jesus said, ‘And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ Let us come to the Lord who is full of compassion and confess our sins in penitence and faith. . Ukrainian Kyrie We confess our selfishness and lack of love. Kyrie eleison ... We confess our fear and failure to trust. Christe eleison ... We confess our pride and the times we have been blind to your grace. Kyrie eleison ... The almighty and merciful Lord grant you pardon and forgiveness of all your sins, time for amendment of life, and the grace and strength of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 6
The Collect Most merciful God, who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ delivered and saved the world: grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross we may triumph in the power of his victory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen Please remain seated. The Liturgy of the Word Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 43.16-21 read by David Ritchie Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, who brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick. Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild animals will honour me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise. This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. Remain seated for the Psalm: 126 sung by the Square Mile Choral Scholars 1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, then were we like those who dream. 2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter and our tongue with songs of joy. 3 Then said they among the nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them.’ 7
4 The Lord has indeed done great things for us, and therefore we rejoiced. 5 Restore again our fortunes, O Lord, as the river beds of the desert. 6 Those who sow in tears shall reap with songs of joy. 7 Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed, will come back with shouts of joy, bearing their sheaves with them. New Testament Reading: Philippians 3.4b-14 read by Sarah Kiernan If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on towards the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. Please stand. 8
Gospel Reading: John 12.1-8 Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All Glory to you O Lord. Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, ‘Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?’ (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you O Christ. Please sit. The Sermon Rev'd Katherine Hedderly Anthem Drop, drop slow tears – Orlando Gibbons sung by the Square Mile Choral Scholars Please stand. The Nicene Creed All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. 9
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen Please sit or kneel. Prayers of Intercession led by Szabina Soptei Lord in your mercy: All Hear our prayer. at the end: Merciful Father, All accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. Please stand. The Peace Once we were far off, but now in union with Christ Jesus we have been brought near through the shedding of Christ's blood, for he is our peace. 10
The peace of the Lord be always with you. All And also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. We share the Peace in a non-contact way, such as with the British Sign Language (BSL) sign for 'peace'. Offertory Hymn During the hymn a collection will be taken towards the ministry of this church. If you are a UK Tax Payer, you can increase the value of your gift by 25% by completing one of the Gift Aid envelopes which are available in the pews. Thank you. We sing the praise of him who died, of him who died upon the cross; the sinner's hope let men deride, for this we count the world but loss. Inscribed upon the cross we see in shining letters, 'God is love'; he bears our sins upon the tree; he brings us mercy from above. The cross! It takes our guilt away: it holds the fainting spirit up; it cheers with hope the gloomy day, and sweetens every bitter cup. It makes the coward spirit brave, and nerves the feeble arm for fight; it takes its terror from the grave, and gilds the bed of death with light: The balm of life, the cure of woe, the measure and the pledge of love, the sinner's refuge here below, the angels' theme in heaven above. Thomas Kelly (1769-1854) Tune: Breslau 11
The Preparation of the Table Jesus, true vine and bread of life, ever giving yourself that the world might live, let us share your death and passion: make us perfect in your love. Amen. The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. For as the time of his passion and resurrection draws near the whole world is called to acknowledge his hidden majesty. The power of the life-giving cross reveals the judgement that has come upon the world and the triumph of Christ crucified. He is the victim who dies no more, the Lamb once slain, who lives for ever, our advocate in heaven to plead our cause, exalting us there to join with angels and archangels, for ever praising you and singing: 12
Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Great is the mystery of faith: All Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: All Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours forever and ever. Amen 13
The Lord’s Prayer Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Every time we eat this bread and drink this cup, All we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. Agnus Dei All Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. 14
Jesus is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper All Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed Communion will be administered in one kind in front of the altar. Please use the hand sanitiser provided if you wish to receive the bread, and form a line maintaining social distancing. Blessings can be given with the sign of the cross. Music during Communion Verily, verily I say unto you – Thomas Tallis sung by the Square Mile Choral Scholars Prayer after Communion Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters we do also for you: give us the will to be the servant of others as you were the servant of all, and gave up your life and died for us, but are alive and reign, now and for ever. Amen All Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. Notices Please stand. Hymn Light of the minds that know him, may Christ be light to mine! My sun in risen splendour, my light of truth divine; my guide in doubt and darkness, my true and living way, my clear light ever shining, my dawn of heaven's day. 15
Strength of the wills that serve him, may Christ be strength to me, who stilled the storm and tempest, who calmed the tossing sea; his Spirit's power to move me, his will to master mine, his cross to carry daily and conquer in his sign. May it be ours to know him that we may truly love, and loving, fully serve him as serve the saints above; till in that home of glory with fadeless splendour bright, we serve in perfect freedom our strength, our life, our light. Timothy Dudley-Smith (b1926) Tune: Au fort de ma détresse The Blessing Christ crucified draw you to himself, to find in him a sure ground for faith, a firm support for hope, and the assurance of sins forgiven; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen Walk with Christ on the way of the Cross for it is the way of life and peace. All Thanks be to God Blessing Anthem May the grace of Christ our Saviour - Anthony Caes sung by the Square Mile Choral Scholars Music after the Service Ukrainian Folk Song "Farewell, Dear Country Home" Op.81 (2022) - Vidas Pinkevicius TWO CITIES ECOTIPS Use Cloth Grocery Bags or Baskets. Plastic bags are typically used for no more than an hour or two and then sit in landfills for hundreds of years. They are the epitome of consumerism and wastefulness, along with plastic water bottles. 16
