ON THE March 2022 Email: info@vinesgolfclub.com.au Web: www.vinesofreynella.com.au In this edition… • From the Manager’s Desk…car park issues, 16 ½, renovations • Board Meeting Notes • From the Captain…Course Committee, McMillan Shield, SA State Team, Monthly Medal, Summer Par Cup, upcoming events • SOCIAL EVENTS… Texas Hold'em Poker Night, Hypnotic Experience Stage Show A note from the President…David Schomburgk This year is flying by, and we are already nearing the end of March which signals the imminent end of daylight saving, the end of the first 6 months of our financial year, the start of the Ladies Winter Season and the rapidly approaching Australian Junior Amateur which we are hosting from 5-8 April. With the end of daylight savings, we also see the end of Twilight Golf for this season. The popularity of this event is obvious judging by the number of members who participate each week and while the formal competition is drawing to a close, I am sure that many of those members who are regulars will continue to play “a quick 9 holes” as often as the weather permits throughout the winter season. With the coming end of daylight savings (and shorter days) there will also be a reduction in the number of tee times available each week. It is however expected that all members wishing to play will still be able to access a tee time on any day that is applicable to their class of membership. We have noted that with the lifting of COVID restrictions there has been an increase in the number of members travelling and as a result there has been an increase in the number of available tee times on all days of the week. The Committee will continue to monitor this throughout the winter. Main Club Sponsor…
A note from the President…(continued) On 1 March we had the Opening day for the Ladies Winter Season, and I was pleased to be able to address that meeting to not only wish them well for the coming season but also to confirm that the Board has established a committee that is charged with the Promotion of Women’s Golf. This is consistent with our Strategic Plan where one of our goals is “to increase the number of playing female members by 100% by 2025”. This is undoubtedly an ambitious goal, but this committee has already put forward a number of great ideas which I am sure we will hear more about in the near future. Consistent with this, it was pleasing to see 16 new ladies out this week participating in the “Give Golf a Go” program. What a great start. At that meeting I was also able to announce that the Board had signed off on a proposal to completely renovate the Male, Female and Disability Access toilet facilities at the Bistro end of the clubhouse. I am sure that members and bistro patrons will all agree that this is a long overdue project which has previously been held back by a lack of finance. The successful tenderer to carry out this work is Adelaide Built (member Jake Slaghekke) and all things going well this work will be completed in time for the Australian Junior Amateur that is due to start on 5th April. Preparations for the Junior Open are well underway, and we are very grateful to that hardy group of volunteers who are doing extra work around the course to tidy things up a little more. You may notice the work they have done in cleaning up under the tree line on the left-hand side of the first hole, the left-hand side of the 5th hole (around the bottom of the hill), the back of the 4th green and in the trees between the practice range and the 4th fairway. We are still seeking some additional volunteers for the actual event so if you have some spare time, even if only a couple of hours, in the week between 4-8 April please contact John Ward or the office who will put you in touch with John. There are a range of tasks that do not require any experience and John will certainly be only too happy to provide any assistance or advice. Finally, I am pleased to advise that the Board has confirmed the permanent appointment of Payton Hermanson as Manager of Hospitality. Payton has now been with us for just on a year and has done a great job despite the difficulties of Covid and the restrictions it has placed on our hospitality services. I am aware that she was being ‘head hunted’ by at least one other organisation so we are very pleased that she has chosen to stay with us. At its February meeting the Board also approved the appointment of Greg Kemp to the role of Club Vice President – Congratulations Greg. In accordance with the Club’s Constitution the position of Vice President is filled from within the elected Board and allows for the Vice President to act in the absence of the President. Given that it is mid-March at the time of my writing it would be a surprise to most if I did not also acknowledge the start of a new AFL season. Hopefully it is a good one for both South Australian teams - but a bit more so for the Power. Good luck to all those in their Tipping Contests. Look forward to seeing you all out on the course and Good Golfing to All. WANT TO READ “ON THE GRAPEVINE” IN GLORIOUS COLOUR Have a look on our web-site
From the Manager’s Desk……Peter Kennedy Car Park Issues Could members please park within the lines in the car park please. Due to the large number of golfers there are regular complaints received by the office about cars parked at angles, or not within the lines, making parking for others difficult. Also could members please not bring trailers of caravans which take up parking spaces as well. Practice on 16 and a Half Golfers need to note that practice on 16 and a half is only in one direction towards the green for safety of other golfers on the course. Any balls hit in the other direction (green to “tee”) have proved an issue for golfers on the 17 th tee on a regular basis. Toilet Renovations Update The long overdue renovations to the toilets at the car park end have commenced. Critically the disabled toilets will be out of action for approximately a week from Tuesday 15th March and there will be no disabled facility during this period. Please advise any members or guests who may be affected by this as we would not like anyone to be inconvenienced if at all possible.
From the Captain…………………….Mick Gibbie Our new course committee There has been quite a lot of speculation/rumours going around the club about changes our new committee may be planning to make to our course. I must say some of these have been verging on the hysterical and were borderline offensive to the members of the committee and to the members of the board. All actions taken by our committees are not only in the best interests of the club but these committees have the experience and expertise in both business and golf to carry these out. Recently the club has also engaged a highly credentialed Golf Course designer, Ryan Van Der Veen, to help us plan for any possible changes we may make in the future. Whilst we have a magnificent golf course at the moment, a lack of funds over the years have stopped us making any major renovations and improvements. This is not the case now. The club is in a good financial position to not only replace our watering system (our number one priority) but to make improvements to the course in future years. To do this a lot of planning needs to be done. That is what the Course Committee and the Board is doing. Our Chairman of Course, Paul Gregory, has been a member of our club for over 40 years, has been a scratch golfer of a lot of that time and is a successful businessman. I cannot think of a better person to lead our new course committee and I fully support him and his committee. McMillan Shield Last Sunday I had the pleasure to watch some of our young golfers compete in the McMillan Shield at our club. This is an entry level matchplay interclub competition. The Vines have won this Shield a number of times over the years including 3 years in a row just a few years back. In a superb performance representing the club against Glenelg our young tyros won their match 5/1. Well done to all South Australian State Team Congratulations to Charlie Nobbs on being named in the SA State side for the interstate series at Mount Osmond GC 11th -14th April. This event is the week following the Aussie Junior Championships at our club on 4th – 8th April. Charlie also recently finished 47th at the Riversdale Cup in Victoria. This event has all the best Amateur golfers from around Australia participating, so not a bad result for him. Monthly Medal Winners After not playing much golf recently it hasn’t taken Marc Fulton long to get back into to the swing of things. A hole in one on the 10th on Wednesday the 2nd March was quickly followed by nett 66 on Saturday and the Monthly Medal to boot! Well done Marc and good to see you back on the course. It was a day of hot scoring with 13 players scoring in the sixties including relatively new member Adrian Willoughby with a fine 67. Corey Apthorpe and Mick Bruggeman were both lamenting the fact that their 1 under par 70s, (off the stick) for nett 69, only got them a $5 golf ball! The Mid Week Medal for March was won by Neil Majewski with 65 from Nev Stephens 67 and Vin Pike 68. Well played by all. The Summer Par Cup With 1 round to play in the Summer Par Cup Robbie Crisa holds a 5 shot lead over Dean Quinn with Chris Burns a further shot back. The final round is this Saturday. Best of luck to all

Board Meeting Notes Board Grapevine Report February • The Board passed a motion to establish the Promotion of Women’s golf committee of Chair of Women’s Golf Lyn Cummings, Heather Chapman, Sasha Leitch, Amanda Heapy and Manager Peter Kennedy • The Board noted the removal of Mt Marino cost increased due to an underestimation of amount of soil to take away and also issues with dump site costs. It was accepted as a good thing that this had finally been completed as there was an annual cost to the club for weed control on the site. • A quote to bitumen seal the unsealed part of the carpark was received which will be included in budget submissions for the next financial year. • Progress with preparations for the Australian Junior across all sections of the club were noted • Performance in the bar and catering departments was reduced during the month due to the Covid restrictions of 25% and 50 % capacity which also meant the pausing of Friday night draws for most of January. • The Long Term Members Day had to have another change of date due to club commitments and a new date will be sought for the event, at this stage being May 1st. • The Board approved funding for the renovations of the toilets at the car park end of the building which will take place as soon as possible. It will be likely that the Disabled toilet will be under renovation for approximately a week and this will have to be well publicised to members and guests at the time. • The President, Chair of Finance and Manager spent a day at Tea Tree Gully Golf Club sharing experiences and ideas regarding running golf at the moment and a return visit will occur soon. This relationship is seen as valuable going forward as there have already been some information used to each club’s advantage. • The Board continues to monitor other clubs where there is a double or triple vaccination mandate on members and visitors NEW APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP If you see or meet any of our new members then please introduce yourself and make them feel welcome.
