SEPTEMBER 2021 RATHMICHAEL PARISH NEWSLETTER www.rathmichael.dublin.an glican.org Ah September! The month which, even though we The Epistle of James is one of the lesser-known may not realise it, brings about a season of all things books of the New Testament – this may be due new; not least the new school year. For example – in Chapter 2, James states: “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you This September also brings a new season of change have faith but do not have works? I am delighted to report daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, ‘Go in that she and Cherith are both doing well, and Marcus peace; keep warm and eat your fill’, and yet you is taking his new role as big brother very seriously… do not supply their bodily needs, what is the most of the time! Harvest next month, then Advent in November and the celebration of Christ’s Incarnation at Amongst all these changes (and all the changes Christmas in December, to reflect deeply on our we’ve become accustomed to in the past 18 months own faith. Is it one that has an active outworking or so), there is one thing that doesn’t change – the for the good of our fellow human beings – or Word of God. He is the same yesterday, today and even just one other person? If not, why not? tomorrow. Or if you’re not sick of hearing about Covid September is the season for change – let’s do it (I am!), He is the same ‘pre-covid’, ‘midst-covid’ and together! ‘post-covid’. And whatever the world throws at us next – He will be the same during and after that also. The final word: Canon J. John said recently So perhaps it is time for us to focus strongly on the “I think that sometimes we might believe in God privilege that is ours in knowing the Living God – but we don’t believe God”. This September, may Father, Son and Holy Spirit. During September the lectionary goes through the letter of James, and we will be reading from it on two upcom- Sean ing Sundays. Framing his letter within an overall theme of patient perseverance during trials and temptations, James writes in order to encourage his readers to live consistently with what they have learned in Christ. He wants his readers to mature in their faith in Christ by living what they say they be- lieve.

RATHMICHAEL PARISH - FOOD FAIR & COFFEE BAR Thank you to Fiona Ashe and Geoffrey Perrin for all their making and baking and organising for a very suc- cessful Food Fair and Coffee Bar and thank you also to their team (pictured above) for their assistance. Thank you to everyone who supported our Food Fair and Coffee Bar on Saturday 10th July. It was great to get out and meet friends after such a long “lockdown”. The morning was a great success both financially and socially – the weather being the icing on the cake – so to speak! In the meantime please note: We serve coffee - outside the Erck Hall, because of Covid protocol and weather permitting - every Saturday morning from 11.00 a.m. to 12.00. These mornings have been so welcome and it is great to meet people and have a chat. Everyone is welcome! Sean Rector, Rathmichael Parish Organisers supreme! Beyond Rathmichael and the UNICEF Appeal. In the parish we have a concept called ‘Beyond Rathmichael’, which tries to remind us that in so many ways we are ‘wealthy’ especially when comparisons are made with other countries. At the moment this is surely most obvious in the huge disparities in the provision of COVID 19 vaccines. You may have heard, or read about, the current campaign by UNICEF to deliver 2 billion, yes billion vaccines to the most vulnerable people on our planet by the end of this year. As a parish we would like to do what we can to support this appeal. Most of us have had one or two vaccinations by now and at no cost to ourselves. The actual cost of a vaccination varies but most are in the 10 to 20 Euro range. What about contributing at least a similar amount and in time the total will be sent by the parish to UNICEF. Contributions can be made online via the parish bank account as per the details below: Account Name: Rathmichael Parish Account No: 40168005 Sort Code: 933392 IBAN: IE31AIBK93339240168005 BIC: AIBKIE2D Please mark your contribution UNICEF-to avoid it getting mixed up with parish funds! Otherwise cheques can be given to us or left in the church porch. With many thanks, Revd Sean Hanily Geoffrey Perrin Rector Hon. Secretary

This has been a place to come and socialise safely. Covid protocols are observed. RATHMICHAEL WALKERS Six of us went to the new car park on the upper Reservoir at Roundwood on July 24th. Last time we did this walk the reservoir was virtually empty, this time it was really full. It was a cool and sunny day and it was really beautiful with the trees and the water. The “Ogham Tree Trail” was an interesting extra. Also, the 100 meters or so we were on the road, we were entertained by about 25 vintage cars driving by, everyone happy and waving at us! We had lunch outdoors in one of the pubs in the village. It was a good day out. Our next two walks are on August 28th and September 25th. Everyone welcome to join us. RATHMICHAEL PARISH NATIONAL SCHOOL School returned on Monday 30th August to our new normal! The staff and I are getting very used to our new guidelines and regulations. The pupils take everything in their stride and are just happy to be back in school. We are all very grateful for the lovely summer we have had and welcome the good weather on our return to school. We hope to have swimming and occasional tours this year as we missed these last year. Choir and music will only be allowed in well ventilated rooms like our hall, but the children must be socially distanced. Our after school games will continue with the children in their class bubbles. With the vaccinations we do feel a lot safer but protocols must remain in place to keep the whole school safe. Many thanks to Revd Sean Hanily for his lovely 'Back to School' service on Sunday 29th August and indeed welcome to the new Hanily baby, Felicity. What a lovely start to the new school year! I will keep you all abreast of events during the year. Keep positive and smiling.
