Rotary Club of Bakersfield Twilight “The Torch” February 9, 2021 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT: LI GIBBS Rotary year 2020-2021 “Rotary Opens Opportunities” Twilighters #WeDoItAtNight FEBRUARY CELEBRATING 115 YEARS OF ROTARY! Hello Twilight family, I hope you had a good three-day week- end. What a GREAT meeting last week, I wish we had more time, there was so much fascinating information. I learned a lot about native Hawaiian culture and the obstacles to building The World’s Largest Telescope in Hawaii. We should invite them back with a scientist to talk about the construction and specifics of the telescope itself. I read that several countries are each sponsoring different parts of the telescope, that’s the Rotary way! Happy to see so many of your smiling faces (and names) as well as our wonderful Centennial Interact students. This Wednesday’s Valentine Social is very special for Twilight, Collin Snitchler will be inducted as our newest member, the very first Zoom induction for our mighty club…ZOOM IN WEDNESDAY TO OFFICIALLY WELCOME COLLIN TO TWILIGHT and get to know more about him! Twilight completed the District 5240 TRF Challenge. Congratulations mighty Twilighters, YOU rock! Community Service Director, Laura needs YOUR help with our February project (easy stuff) so check out page 4! On page 5 you will find our incredible CHS Interactors’ February service project. They make us so proud! On other projects, Laura is working with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) collecting new and gently used books (ages up to 22) for CASA’s new borrowing library, so please start looking through your books now! Our Youth Service Director, B-Rad, distributed the District 4-Way Test Contest to our Interactors and will oversee the committee deciding which essay to submit. He and Laura are also joining forces with BERC Youth and Community Service Directors on the Rotary Park painting and planting project, details to come. This year RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) is going virtual, more on that soon. Also going all virtual is Rotary International Convention in Taipei, giving even more Rotarians the unique opportunity to experience this amazing global event. We’ll know more as plans progress. Fun Meister Jeremy’s new “Tapa of the Month” is on page 7, make it to show it off and eat during our upcoming Valentine’s Day Social. Read his message to each of you on page 2. There’s much more in this issue, I hope you enjoy it and I welcome your stories and ideas to include in next week’s issue! I look forward to seeing EVERYONE…yes, you, this Wednesday for some Valentine’s Day fun and welcome Collin to our Twilight family! See you ALL TOMORROW and bring a friend! A VERY SPECIAL VALENTINE’S SOCIAL THIS WEDNESDAY! Club Fun Meister Jeremy Swanson “For the Valentines Day social, please think of a funny moment related to your relational or dating life that you’d like to share---it should be about a minute long, maybe a minute and a half at most. If you don’t have something that immediately comes to mind, don’t worry! We’ll instead hit you with a random question that you get to answer. Hilarity will ensue. We think. Maybe. Probably. So be thinking of a moment to share, and if it’s something about a current spouse, that’s probably even going to be funnier because we can ask them if it’s true and that’s how they remember it or not. See you all at the social!” __________________________________________ NEW MEMBER INDUCTION, COME TO WELCOME COLLIN SNITCHLER TO OUR TWILIGHT FAMILY! ___________________________________________ Inspirational Moment brought to you by Pamela Elisheva From Twilight February 3rd Meeting Carl Sagan provides the inspirational moments for this week when we heard about telescopes on the top of Moana Kea. Carl Sagan lived from November 9, 1934 to December 20, 1996. He was an American astronomer, planetary scientist, cosmologist, astro- physicist, astrobiologist, author, poet and science communicator. He inspired us to reach for the stars in two popular television series, "Cosmos" and "Contact". Here are some of his quotes that help us see our place among the stars: "Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known." "For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love." "Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere." "Every one of us is, in the cosmic perspective, precious. If a human disagrees with you, let him live. In a hundred billion galaxies, you will not find another.” PAGE 2 !

Centennial Interact Service Project! Submitted by Ana Heron, Centennial Interact Community Service Director Our wonderful club members will decorate Valentine’s Day cards for seniors at Brookdale! My co-service project director, Lianne Akey, and I are collecting all the cards at a drop-off event Saturday, February 13th from 1-2pm at River- lakes Ranch Park (right next to Centennial). I will deliver all the cards to Brookdale Senior Liv- ing February 14th so that they will receive them on Valentine’s Day and hopefully feel all the love! There are 175 seniors, we will make sure there is at least one card for every senior so that everyone knows and feels they are appreciated. The Senior Center sounded super excited on the phone, so we are very grateful to make them happy on that very special day. Poster by Jordyn Toler Centennial Interact Marketing Director PAGE 5 !
Tapa of the Month: February Brought to you by Fun Meister Jeremy Swanson Boles de Picolat - Meatballs with tomato sauce A popular classic amongst tapas dishes Meatballs with tomato sauce is a classic amongst tapas dishes, and should not be missing from any tapas menu. A dry sherry fits well as a drink with this dish. Ingredients for 4 servings •500 g ground meat (or vegetarian meat substitute) • 700 g tomatoes • 250 ml beef broth • 50 ml sherry • 2 garlic cloves • 1 large onion • 5 tablespoons olive oil • 2 eggs • 2 slices of toast • Salt, pepper, 1 pinch of paprika • Parsley or bay leaf Preparation Peel the onion and chop finely. Peel the garlic. Cut the crust from the toast and cut the bread into small cubes. Let the toast soak in a little milk. Drop the tomatoes into boiling water for a moment and remove the skin. Cut into small pieces. Place in a pot; pour in the broth, and leave to simmer at a low temperature for about 30 minutes, stirring regularly. Meanwhile put the ground beef into a bowl. Press the garlic into the bowl, and then add the bread and the egg. If you like parsley, you can add about 2 or 3 of the chopped parsley bunches. Leave some parsley left over in order to sprinkle over the meatballs at the end. Mix everything well into a mixture and season with salt, pepper and paprika. With your hands shape balls of about 2 cm in diameter out of the mixture. Heat the olive oil in a pan and fry the meatballs over medium heat until evenly brown. Season the tomato sauce to taste and add the browned meatballs to it. Leave for 10-15 minutes on low heat and sprinkle with the remaining parsley. Serve warm or cold in a bowl. You can stick toothpicks in the meatballs. Preparation time: about 30 minutes and 40 minutes cooking time. PAGE 7 !
GLOBAL GRANT PROJECT HYDROPONIC SYSTEMS IN CIUDAD SANDINO, NICARAGUA Submitted by Pamela Elisheva, International Service As you know, our Twilight Club is participating in Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise’s (RCSBS’s) Global Grant Project with Rotary Club Ciudad Sandino to provide aquaponics sys- tems to 57 families in Ciudad Sandino, Nicaragua. Each family’s system can be done for approx- imately $700, and our Club has pledged $1400 for two systems. Santa Barbara Sunrise informs us that the Global Grant application is just about completed; they just finished a financial calculation as an attachment to the application. Our $1400 is a pledge only at this time, and we will not send the $1400 from our Rotary Club Twilight Foundation un- til the grant has been approved by The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and the agreement documenta- tion signed by the two lead clubs. TRF will request that the clubs who committed funds to- wards the grant send the money to them for the specific Global Grant number. Once TRF has received all the mon- ey, then they will distribute it to the special checking ac- count for the grant project. This way, our club will also re- ceive Paul Harris Fellow credit for the contribution. (YAY!) Translation on the tank: “Donated by Rotary” PAGE 8 !
