Rotary Club of Dayton This Week at Rotary MONDAY, MARCH 8, 2021 "A Life in the Theatre" Club Leaders SPEAKER: W. Stuart McDowell Brian O. W. Stuart McDowell is an award winning playwright, director and scholar. He was a Martin two-year Fulbright Scholar, as well as a DeWitt Wallace Fellow, for residencies in President Berlin, where he focused on Bertolt Brecht's work. Stuart served as Chair of the Wright State University Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures from 1994-2016, after working in professional theatre in New York and California for two decades as actor, composer, director, translator and artistic director. Stuart and his wife, Gloria Shaun Yu Skurski co-founded the Riverside Shakespeare Company of New York City, Where they President- mounted dramas and benefits, including the first New York City stage production Elect featuring Tom Hanks in 1979. Pre-meeting chats ended and we were brought back together at 12:10 pm and President Brian Martin welcomed us to a beautiful day as well as noted how beautiful it was while on vacation and pointed out his backdrop as one of the beautiful scenes he saw Domigan while in South Carolina. Bill Nance gave the invocation and spoke about patience. He then led us in the Four-Way Test and the Treasurer Pledge of Allegiance. Next he shared the news of the day. Secretary Kim Bramlage welcomed everyone to the meeting and Diane Farrell introduced her guest Jamie Kenny. Kim then Jean L. recognized March Birthdays This week: Bob Hanseman, Shaun Yu, Shayna Thomas, RoNita Hawes-Saunders and Tom Kemp. Next Maychack up she called on voluntary Day-10s. Nick Warrington gave a Day-20 to announce that unfortunately WSU Arts Gala will be iPast cancelled again this year. Each year the Gala raises about $150k/yr. for scholarships . This year 250 Wright State custom Snow President Globes will be created and sold instead. This is done in partnership with Rotarian Kelly Lehman. Jean Maychack gave a Day 50 for reconstructive surgery her son had on an old foot Manuel injury he suffered in an accident. Carolyn Rice gave a Day 100 for her Paul Harris to recognize her father-in-laws 90th birthday Assistant and for her being selected for Leadership Ohio class. Shaun Yu announced that Dayton Classic Radio station will feature WSU on Governor the day of the would be scheduled gala 4/17 and gave a Day 100 towards his Woodhull. Holly Wiggins gave a Day 25 to thank Diane Farrell for the chamber Empower group and to announce that DP&L is AES Ohio rebranded. Cindy Garner gave a Day 25 for her son graduating in the Air Force and moving to Pensacola. Matt Scarr gave a Day 100 in memory of Sandy Gieb. President Brian then called on John Neff, Dayton Rotary Foundation Trustee a $3000 grant to Goodwill Easter Seals of Miami Birthdays Valley for their car seat safety program. He then introduced of Caryl Segalewitz of Goodwill Easter Seals to review the program and how beneficial it is to the community. Brian then introduced Steve Conklin as our newest Dayton Rotarian, Adam Horseman. Merle F. Brian officially welcomed Adam into the club. He then shared that (USA) Rotary, we will be meeting on zoom at least until the end Wilberding of this Rotary year or through June 2021. We hope the vaccinations will come sooner and we can get back to normal. March 8th Presient Brian then welcomed Karla Garrett Harshaw as the Chair of the Day. She introduced both Robyn Traywick and Joseph Warden from Advocates for Basic Legal Aid for the presentation. Robyn thanked Rotary for having both she and Joe and began the presentation for Civil Legal Aid in Dayton and spoke on the Medical Legal Partnership for Children. What is Civil Legal Aid? It is Terry F. the right to counsel. Basic human needs like access to food, shelter, health care, and safety may be at stake in civil legal cases. Offenberger Civil legal aid organization provide free legal assistance to people who cannot afford an attorney (usually 125% of the FPL). What March 12th is the Medical Legal Partnership Movement (MLP)? It was first created in Boston in 1993 where a pediatrician Barry Zuckerman, MD hired lawyers to woork with doctors at the Boston Medical Center to address legal needs that impacted child health. There are currently over 292 MLP sites around the country serving children, seniors, veterans, immigrants, people who were formerly Evelyn incarcerated, pregnant women and individuals with cancer. The MLP is a healthcare delivery mondel which addressed health- Davidson harming legal needs that disproportinately affect people living in poverty. Healthcare and legal professionals use training, screeding March 12th and legal care to improved patient and population health. Legar care is integrated into the delivery of healthcare with deeply engaged health and legal partners at both front-line and administrative levels. The Dayton MLP for Kids profides consultations, coaching and training for providers and free legal services for patients and families (through referrals). They assist with legal advice, preparing legal documents, representation in court, and with systemic advocacy. Social Determinancts of Health are the Kenneth F. conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, May
power amd resources at a global, national and local level. For chidlren the social determinants of health are the conditions in March 12th which they live, learn and play. Next she covered the topic of Adverse Child Experiences such as Katherine emotional, physical and sexual abuse Vriner as well as physical neglect and March 12th emotional neglect. Also included are "Household Challenges" such as parents treated violently, substance abuse in the household, mental Robert E illness in the household, parental Daley seperation or divorce and March 13th incarceration of a household member. How poverty affects children...living in poverty increases the likelihood children will Carl E. experience additional ACEs which Moyler lead to worse health outcomes and March 14th toxic stress which can have lifelong effects. Robin then shared with us a case study and concluded the presentation and Kim thanked everyone for coming. April 05, 2021 Mark Murdock Dayton VA Medical NEW MEMBER PROFILE Center Adam Horseman has called the Dayton area home for nearly his entire life. After graduating April 12, 2021 from Beavercreek High School, he attended Wright State University, majoring in Athletic Exchange Student Training. He then traded in the cold of Ohio for the sun of Florida, attending the University Roundtable of Florida, where he worked as an athletic trainer while earning his Master�s degree in April 19, 2021 Exercise and Sport Science. Even though the university was experiencing high levels of Jonathan McNeal athletic and academic success, Adam yearned to return to his roots in Ohio. He came back Oscars Preview in 2006 and began his career at Wright State, where he has spent the last 14 years. April 26, 2021 Recently though, Adam shifted gears and took his passion for helping others and problem Bing Davis, Local solving and begin working as an Insurance Consultant for Robert K. Jones Insurance in Artist Kettering. Now, he spends his days building relationships with individuals and local business, using that knowledge to craft insurance solutions to protect the things they value in life. May 03, 2021 Laura Estandia, Adam, his wife Brittany, and their two children (Camden and Jake) reside in Beavercreek, Executive Director where his wife owns and operates a successful law firm. In their spare time, they serve in Bike Miami Valley their church, shuttle their kids to various sporting events around town, spend time cooking May 24, 2021 together as a family, and seek out all the hidden gems of this great city!
