I have been very impressed by the effort that students in Years 7 to 9 have made to complete their work in our Step-Up program. This has provided them with a head start for their learning in 2021. It was a pleasure to finally meet all of the Year 6 students who will be joining us next year on Tuesday. Mrs Combe had planned activities and photos from the Transition Day can be found later in the newsletter. The Year 12 Graduation Dinner last Friday was a wonderful evening, with 22 of our Year 12 students attending the formal event accompanied by a special guest. Mr Mattschoss was the official photographer for the evening and students were pleased that this milestone in their schooling could be recognised. The hall looked amazing with a black and white theme, and thanks go to Ms Tellbach, Helen Polack and Gaynor Baker for their work in setting things up and also to the many staff who assisted behind the scenes to make this event happen. Awards Night has now been pre-recorded ready for the virtual event next Tuesday 15th December. A link to the presentation that Mr Corbett has put together will be posted at 7pm on the DMSC website. I encourage students, parents and members of the school community to watch this presentation which recognises and celebrates the successes of a number of students in their academic pursuits throughout the year. Prizes, certificates and copies of the school magazine will be available for collection next Wednesday 16th December from the front office. Student reports will also be available online next Wednesday on the XUNO parent portal. Student activities have been planned for next Monday and Tuesday, with the weather looking promising. This year there is also Hip-Hop dancing, which has been provided through the Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council. Thank you to Miss Fell for overseeing the organisation of these two days. Congratulations to our Business Manager Kaye Webb, who received her 45 year service certificate from the Department of Education and Training this week. Kaye has spent this entire time dedicated to our school community and we thank her for the huge contribution she has made to our school. Enjoy your weekend. Sally Klinge
Year 7 Orientation day! On Tuesday the 8th of December 22 Grade 6 students attended their state wide transition day. Students were keen and eager to try new subjects and meet their new teachers. Throughout the day, they experienced PE, Food Technology and Art. We look forward to welcoming the new Year 7s in 2021.
Year 8 Science The current Year 8s have been working on creating a symphony of sound in Science this week. Each student had to design an instrument that made at least two sounds and create it during class time. We had many instruments such as modified guitars, drums and even a piano! The whole class demonstrated their fantastic music skills to a group of teachers who came to hear the concert. They then broke off into small groups to perform a 20 second song of their choice - we even had some vocals included! Each student worked very hard on their design and decoration and they should all be very proud of what they achieved.
Year 11 VCAL It is not always just fun and games in VCAL but to finish off the year and tick off a couple of outcomes we decided to work on our problem solving, teamwork and communication skills by playing Giant Jenga. The tower ended up being exceptionally high and we felt like it would fall at any minute, but it persisted. In the end Malcolm decided to use one of his crutches to belt out a lonesome brick so we could watch the tower fall. Instead, the brick went shooting out the other side and the tower remained standing. I am not sure if anyone recovered from the shock of Malcolm’s exceptional skills. Well done Year 11 VCAL - let us hit the ground running again in 2021. Canteen News The canteen will not be doing lunch orders next week. Will be open for cold drinks and icypoles Monday and Tuesday only next week.

2020 Fire Season School procedures for the bushfire season Fire danger ratings and warnings are used in Victoria to provide clear direction on the safest options for preserving life. Schools and children’s services listed on the DET Bushfire At-Risk Register (BARR) will be closed when a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined in their Bureau of Meteorology district. Our school has been identified as being one of those at high bushfire risk and is listed on the BARR. Where possible, we will provide parents with up to four days’ notice of a potential Code Red day closure by letter and SMS message. A Code Red day will be determined by the Emergency Management Commissioner no later than 1.00 pm the day before the potential closure. Once we are advised of the confirmation of the Code Red day we will provide you with advice before the end of the school day. Once confirmed, the decision to close will not change, regardless of improvements in the weather forecast. This is to avoid confusion and help your family plan alternative care arrangements for your child. It is also important to note that: • No staff will be on site on days where the school is closed due to a forecast Code Red day. • School camps will be cancelled if a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined for the Bureau of Meteorology district in which the camp is located. • As a bus co-ordinating school all bus routes will be cancelled. On these Code Red days families are encouraged to enact their Bushfire Survival Plan – on such days children should never be left at home or in the care of older children. For those of us living in a bushfire prone area, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) advises that when Code Red days are forecast, the safest option is to leave the night before or early on the morning of the Code Red day. As part of preparing our school for potential hazards such as fire, we have updated and completed our Emergency Management Plan, and reprioritised any maintenance works that may assist in preparing for the threat of fire and cleared our facility’s grounds and gutters. What can parents do? • Make sure your family’s bushfire survival plan is up-to-date and includes alternative care arrangements in the event that our school is closed. • Ensure we have your current contact details, including your mobile phone numbers. Keep in touch with us by reading our newsletters and by checking our website. http://www.dmsc.vic.edu.au/ or Facebook page. If you have any further concerns, please contact either Sally Klinge (Principal) or Charlotte Pyers (Assistant Principal) at the college. 5389 1460 • Most importantly at this time of year, if you’re planning a holiday or short stay in the bush or in a coastal area, you should check warnings in advance of travel and remain vigilant during your stay. • If your child is old enough, talk to them about bushfires and your family’s bushfire survival plan. • You can access more information about children’s services closures on the Department of Education and Training website – see http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/health/pages/closures.aspx For up-to-date information on this year’s fire season see: • https://emergency.vic.gov.au • Facebook (facebook.com/cfavic) • Twitter (twitter.com/CFA_Updates) • ABC local radio, Sky News and other emergency broadcasters • VicEmergency Hotline (1800 226 226)
