Week 8, Term 3 8 September 2020 Te Reo ō te Kura ō Hato Hoāni Kia ora whanau The voice of St John’s School Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei Seek the treasure you value most dearly: if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain This whakatauki is about aiming high or for what is truly valuable, but it's real message is to be persistent and don't let obstacles stop you from reaching your goal. We remain at Alert Level 2.5 and are managing the process well. Our children are so good, really capable and are demonstrating high levels of resilience, as are our staff. This week our Year 5 and 6 students will film their production. Whilst I am sad they won’t have the experience of performing to a live audience I do think they will learn a lot about the process of film making. I wish to sincerely thank Brendon Murphy for kindly offering his time and expertise to do the filming for us. We are once again blessed to have such a giving community. We are all faced with challenges at present, within our families and our learning environments, businesses and within the wider community. As we near the end of the term, if you wish to discuss matters relating to fee payments for school for Term 3, please contact me in confidence, vikit@sjmb.school.nz or Michele in the office michelen@sjmb.school.nz. God’s blessings on you all, Viki Trainor – Principal
FEEDBACK REQUEST Our School is continuing our relationship with AskYourTeam; a cloud-based system that allows us to collect the views and ideas from everyone in our school community. Here is a link to our annual Future Together survey that asks you for your feedback on our school on a range of issues. The survey is anonymous. This is important because we want you to be honest in your feedback. The survey is now open and will close at 5:00pm on 18th September, 2020. We acknowledge and thank you for your contribution. Jill Marsh Assistant Principal LOST – Yellow Stop Watch Last seen at Swimming Trials held at AUT Millenium Pool on 6th March. Please could parent helpers at this event have a good look at home to see if they still have it and return it to the school office ASAP. It is marked on the back with St John’s #2. Many thanks in advance. Karen Dorrington Sports Co-ordinator HAUORA WELLBEING As a community we are all experiencing challenges at present – within our families, our learning environments, our businesses, and the wider community. Some challenges may seem overwhelming but there are many organisations and resources that can help us. This new article on The Parenting Place website gives us some sensible, practical and easy ideas on how to strengthen relationships under pressure. Although designed as a parenting tool it might also help us in personal or workplace relationships too. https://parentingplace.nz/building-character/strengthening-relationships-under-pressure/ Remember to always look after yourself too. Without self-care it is much harder to constantly care for others. Please don’t be afraid to ask for help. No-one will judge you. If you have never had look after your own mental wellbeing, as well as others around you, you may need to do so now. WORD OF THE WEEK Whakarongo: listen WATER BOTTLES We ask that all children bring a water bottle to school as our drinking fountains remain switched off. These can be refilled in the classrooms. TONGAN LANGUAGE WEEK Mālō e lelei. This week is Tongan Language Week. The theme for this year is "Fakakoloa ‘o Aotearoa ‘aki ‘a e Lotu Mo’oni" which in English means "Enriching Aotearoa New Zealand through Prayer and Faith". Each year a different theme is used to promote the richness of the Tongan language and culture with the Tongan community but also all New Zealanders. A great way of being involved is to try and use some Tongan phrases. Try to incorporate some of these each day this week. Lea Faka-Tonga basic pronunciation tips It is important that the short and long vowel sounds are used, as they distinguish between different words – e.g. kākā (to cheat) or kaka (to climb). Fakau’a always comes before a vowel sound. This changes the vowel to a shorter, sharper sound. This also distinguishes between different words – e.g. anga (behaviour) and ‘anga (shark). ‘a, ‘e, ‘i, ‘o, ‘u (as in the English: ah ha, elephant, inn, orange, ooh la la) ‘ā, ‘ē, ‘ī, ‘ō, ‘ū (as in the English: Amen, egg, easy, oh no, soup) Lea Faka-Tonga has twelve konisonānite (consonants): f h k l m n ng p s t v and [’] fakau’a (glottal stop) The consonants are pronounced like in English. The ‘ng’ blend is like the ‘nga’ sound in te reo Māori, or the ‘ng’ sound from the English word ‘song’. The Tongan language also uses fakamamafa he Lea Fiepipiki (stress marks). This mark at the end of a word tells us to make the vowel sound more exaggerated. For example, when we say the word Tonga’ it tells us to emphasise the ‘a’ sound at the end.
DAFFODIL DAY What a great day we had for Daffodil Day 2020! The array of yellow among our children and staff on this glorious spring day has been somewhat uplifting. Each child received a daffodil transfer which they also wore to be part of this appeal. Our day was led by our Young MacKillops. These children led the running of the appeal with great success. Many thanks to the Young MacKillops for their great leadership on this special day. A BIG THANK YOU to you all… We raised a total of $519.40 for The Cancer Society.
