From the Principal: We are at that time of the year when we are putting the finishing touches on our staffing for 2019, and with that comes the organisation of class groups. As you will be aware, with co-taught classes the children are generally working together apart from the time they spend in specialist classes. If you have a serious consideration regarding your child’s placement for 2019 that you have already approached the school about, please formalise this by sending an email to the school email address by Monday 3rd of December. Serious considerations are contemplated and we do our best to ensure appropriate placement of children in grades. It is very exciting to see the temporary safety fencing surrounding the first part of our building works. Once buildings begin shortly, we will be giving updates on how things are going based on our fortnightly walk throughs with the builder and project manager. This week our leadership team met with the Literacy Teacher Partners who will be working with us for the duration of 2019. This is an exciting move for our school and provides us with the opportunity for both of them to work alongside our teachers on our literacy teaching and learning for two days a fortnight. They will also be providing the whole staff with literacy professional development. Thank you to the parents who worked at school on Saturday at the election BBQ. It is great to have had an extra opportunity to raise funds to put toward new and exciting things at our school. Kind regards, Lisa
From the Assistant Principal: Assessment for Learning at Lilydale West A continuing focus moving forward into 2019 is in building student agency in learning. Student Agency refers to working with students in identifying their own strengths and areas of improvement and in the design of learning activities that are meaningful and relevant to learners, driven by their interests, and often self-initiated with guidance from teachers. The whole school planning and Inquiry model implemented at Lilydale West in 2018 has shown an increased focus on teachers engaging student in their own and cohort learning. Another essential element of student agency we have been working on this year is in developing student understanding of their own assessment data and in the creation of individual learning goals in response to their own needs. Teachers work in collaboration with students to create goals, identifying the strengths and areas for improvement. They discuss learning strategies and how students can effect change in their own learning, and reflect on their own growth. An effective method of improving student agency in their own assessment data is through the use of rubrics. Rubrics are usually in the form of a matrix or grid that are often created together with students. They provide the students and teachers with a common understanding of what is required when working a learning task, interpreting outcomes against set criteria. At Lilydale West we often use rubrics for assessing portfolio tasks and in 2019 will be having an increased focus on developing rubrics for hands on maths learning activities. It has been exciting to hear students’ discussion of their own learning this year. We regularly have students approach us in the yard or come to the office to share their learning growth and tell us about the way they are learning in their classroom. We look forward to hear more from students in 2019. Anita Elliott

Year 3/4: This week our Year 4 students have been working hard, preparing 'LWPS Welcome bags' for our upcoming Foundation students. The Year 4 students will be acting as 'buddies' next year; helping to welcome our newcomers to the school, providing support and friendship and most of all, helping to make the start of their school life comfortable and safe. We are looking forward to meeting our new friends on Friday. "I am nervous to meet my buddy, but I'm also excited. I plan to play the game that I made for my buddy, with my buddy" (Liam) "I am really excited to meet my buddy and I hope that I make a good impression. I hope that everything goes well and that my bag turns out ok. I hope that my buddy likes the bag, and everything in it." (Juliette) "I am excited to meet my buddy, but at the same time I'm nervous. I hope that he likes the bag that I've made for him. Next year I hope that I can play the board game (that I made for him), with him." (Joshua) "I am super excited to meet my buddy. I hope they enjoy the bag that I've made them, because I've put quite a lot of effort into it. I hope that in the time that I have my buddy I can teach them to have lots of respect for the school. Hopefully I can play my game with them some time." (Ella)

The 2018 event took place on Friday 16th November and they absolutely 'smashed it' and finished in second place out of the 8 competing schools. We are so proud of them!. As is always the case, they set the standard in regards to being respectful participants. A big thanks to the parent helpers who did a great job supporting our teams throughout the day. Junior Future Stars Hooptime State Finals Best of luck to the Lilydale West Gators who are playing in the Hooptime State Finals at Dandenong on Thursday. They are playing against teams from across Victoria and will also take part in a parade of schools.
Champion Dad’s News Champion Dads Group CHANGE OF PLANS ‘NINJA WARRIOR’ Breakfast of Champions Challenge Dear Parents, Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the Ninja Warrior Breakfast will not go ahead. On Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December the school will not be able to be accessed due to demolition works taking place as part of our building upgrade. We have only just been notified that there is a need to close down the school on this weekend. There has been a lot of interest from our dad’s and students to participate in this event, therefore we will aim to conduct the event in 2019. The good news is, an alternate event has been organised for Sunday 2nd December. Refer below. IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR SKATES ON! WHO: Lilydale West P.S Children in Foundation to Grade 6 and their Dad’s/Father Figures. WHERE: Victorian Skating Centre, 34 Industrial Park Drive, Lilydale. WHEN: Sunday 2nd December 2018. 9:30am – 11:30am (There is the option to continue to skate after 11:30) COST: Skating and skate hire (skates or blades) $10 per head to be paid when entering the venue. Non-skaters are free. If children have their own skates, they are most welcome to bring them. FOOD/DRINK: There will be the opportunity to purchase from the kiosk. It is recommended that the children bring along a named drink bottle. We are encouraging the Dad’s and Father Figures to put some skates on and take a ‘roll’ down memory lane, but if for whatever reason you are unable or do not want to, that is totally ok. The Champion Dad’s Organising Team do not take any responsibility for any sore backsides or whatever else might come about from the event. To attend you must RSVP by Wednesday 28th November, stating how many people will be attending from your family. Please RSVP to the address below: ChampDads@lilydalewest.vic.edu.au This will be a super fun event for Dad’s and Father Figures to enjoy with their children, while hanging out with other Lilydale West families. Along with our families with Foundation – Year 2 children, it would be great to have a heap of our Year 3 – Year 6 children attend with their Dads.
