How are all of you!
Time flies so fast that we are moving to the mid-year mark already. We
have lined up a lot of exciting events for you and your family members
to be engaged in during the school holidays. Hey, we have managed
to get good discounts for you for the theatrical circus spectacular
“Voyage de la Vie”, the Singapore Discovery Centre as well as the
newly opened Sea Sports Centre. Go and indulge yourself with your
families ok! There are also kids workshops for jewellery making,
robotics and social etiquette. For those interested in sports, the
annual tennis open and swimming carnival are here, so sign up for
them during the school holidays!

We have a winning photo for our NSRCC Photo Contest which is in the front cover of this
issue. We received many entries and this black and white photo was eventually chosen after careful
consideration and deliberation. Read on inside on why this unique photograph is given the top notch! You can also see
the other entries for comparison. Everybody is a winner because all the photographs are excellent, that is why we have featured the
top finalists in the RV for the rest to enjoy.

Our Annual Charity Golf is back once again and this time, the beneficiaries are Alzheimer Disease Association, Down Syndrome
Association, Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation, SAF Benevolent Fund and Society for the Physically Disabled. If you have not
already signed up for it, please do so as soon as possible for a very good cause. We have always been very supportive of the annual golf
event and let us continue to strive for better results to do our part and share for the needy and less fortunate members of our society.

Do you know that we have a very chic restaurant down at the NSRCC Sea Sports Centre? It is called Chit’s Bar & Restaurant and you
should try the food there! I will not reveal the secret but will let you savour the fine dining for yourself!

Golfers, you will be pleased to know that we intend to feature some golfing tips on how to play better golf in each issue of the RV for
you to learn and improve your strokes. In this issue, we have featured the much dreaded bunker shots which place anxiety in us when
we play. No fear, the pro is here! I have tried it and it works! Looks like my handicap index of 14.9 is set to go down soon!

We are looking for new volunteers to help out at the various committees. If you are interested to be part of our volunteer team to serve
the club and its members, please get in touch with us and we will follow up with you. I must say that it is a very satisfying experience
to serve in the Club and it is truly a positive experience as part of our national service contribution. We do not look for rewards but
satisfaction that we are part of the success of the club over the years. Come and join us! I am certain that with more than 10,000
members, there must be many of you who are experts in your own fields and can contribute towards the continuing growth of NSRCC.

This will be my second last issue of the RV as its Editor. My last issue will be the July/August 2011. There will be a change of Editor after
7 years. Stepping down together with me will be our Captain Andrew Kwa and Seah Chin Aik, the Chairman of the Resort and Facilities
Committee. I will introduce you to the new office bearers at the next issue!

We would like to wish all of you Happy Vesak Day and of course, happy school holidays! Have fun! See you around in the club! If you
see me, please come and say hello and I will still buy you a beer or drink!

Cheers!

Earth Hour! NSRCC turned off non-essential lights in some areas of the club
                           to mark Earth Hour 2011.
Throughout the club, external building perimeter lights, lights at
carpark A, B and C were switched off in a bid to raise awareness
on energy conservation. The carpark was significantly darker
                           during the hour.
The inaugural event also saw some bungalow guests voluntarily
Before Earth Hour switching off lights in their unit while armed with their light

board games, exchanging conversations and having dinner.
The club hopes to extend the span of ‘lights out’ more extensively

All in all Captains’ Cup was a celebration despite no
one scoring a hole-in-one. As they say it is not always
about winning, it’s about the spirit of participation

                   “Fond memories of NSRCC”.

NRCC has just celebrated its 17th birthday
and it was timely for members to share their
joyous moments spent in the club.

The first prize goes to Anthony See with his
photo titled – “Dusk” which portrays the
masculinity that not many would see. In
comparison to many other coloured photos
submitted, “Dusk” seems to have a way of
showing memories in a different perspective.

              Good Debt vs
              Bad Debt
If you read any typical Personal Finance book from a bookstore, one
recurrent advice they have is “be debt-free as soon as possible”.
According to Dennis Ng, many people quickly pay off all their debts
after reading such books including housing loan, which may not be
              the best decision.

              Pay Off Bad Debts
People forget that there is “good debt” and there is “bad debt”. 2. Paying off a housing loan does not increase your net worth.
Bad debt is any debt on consumption. Thus, to me car loans,
personal loans, credit card debt are all bad debt and a person Let me use an example to illustrate:
should avoid such debts or aim to pay them off as soon as
possible. Mr A owns a condominium with a market value of $500,000.
He has an outstanding housing loan of $400,000 and no other
If there’s a way you can be “debt-free” and yet enjoy the benefit liabilities. He has other investments worth about $100,000
of leverage that debt provides wouldn’t it be better? It can be and has $100,000 in cash/CPF Ordinary account balance. He is
done, let me show you how. considering using the $100,000 in cash/CPF fully to reduce his
housing loan from $400,000 to $300,000 after reading books
Personally, my housing loan is $x amount. What I have in cash which “teaches” him to be debt-free as soon as possible. Will
is more than $2x. So am I debt free? Actually on a net basis, doing so really improve his net worth position? See below:
I am. However, I’m deliberately “retaining the housing loan
debt” because it makes financial sense to do so. In my opinion,
the problem with most people is that they only have a limited

              Sand Bunkers
              Learn to Love ‘Em!
We see it all the time…golfers struggling to get out of sand
bunkers on the golf course. Of course by virtue of the tag given
to them of being a sand trap it only stands to reason that we
should try to avoid these areas. If you are able to take on board
and understand these few basic concepts of bunker play, you too
will realize how simple and easy playing from the sand can be.
Swing the club on plane to the left of target with an open
stance with the weight and ball a little left in your stance.

              1. You will ideally not strike the ball 2. Opening the clubface. Most golfers know what an open clubface
directly. The best way to play most should look like but most perform this “opening” the wrong way.
greenside bunker shots is to swing the You must rotate the club in your hands to the desired amount of
club under the ball with an open clubface. openness and then re-grip the club (photo 3). The mistake a lot of
The question is how much power to give golfers make is to rotate their hands/arms until they see the clubface
your swing because you are not directly at the desired openness and think they have opened their clubface
striking the ball. It is obviously going (photo 2). They have not! What they have done is just changed their
to be more than the power normally to grip though into the strongest grip on the planet. This will have a
reach your target if you were to strike the neutralizing effect where the amount of openness that appears on
ball. For the hesitant golfer this can be the clubface will be wiped out by the strong grip. You must change
a tremendous cause of distress. What the relationship of your hands with the club so that when you swing
if you accidentally hit the ball first? under the ball the clubface is definitely open. We open the clubface
This then leads to the understandable to increase the bounce under the club so that the club skids through
reaction of playing the next bunker shot the sand versus digging. The club gains more loft when it opens also
with far more care and less strength and so that the ball comes out high and soft. The direction (alignment)
then you wind up leaving the ball in the and strength of the swing (swing speed) adjustments are necessary
bunker. It is a viscous cycle that leads because of these other essential changes – swinging under the ball
to a phobia about sand bunkers. The with an open clubface.
biggest problem I see about phobias is
that while you are consciously avoiding 3. Commitment. Hesitation and fear all fester due to a lack of

 Social Etiquette
 25 June, Saturday
 10.30am – 1.00pm

Children are like the pillars of our future and teaching them social graces and
etiquette at a young age will better mould their character from childhood.
So, if your child ranges between the ages of 9 to 12 years old, come join us!
This course teaches your child not just table manners but helps them in their
formative years to prepare them to take the next step forward.

This interactive and fun-filled workshop will cover personal grooming and
hygiene, posture and poise, meeting and greetings and many more. At the
end of this workshop, your child will not only be well-equipped with the right
social behaviour and etiquette but also pick up conversational skills, polite
mannerism and most importantly develop self confidence.
