Message from the Board Dear YTCA Members At the time of this writing, we are all under the directives of the Governors of all fifty states to Stay at Home. By now you should have completed all the tasks which you have never had the time to get done. Our dogs are glad to have us home, but there is a limit on how many times they can be bathed, groomed and walked! Have you noticed their quizzical expression when seeing you with a mask for the first time? They must wonder why we are being muzzled! Our Roving/National will be in Greenville, SC on July 18 - 26 2020. We are cautiously optimistic at this time and are proceeding with the plans, with the sincere hope that life will be back to normal before that date. If our plans do change, you will be notified immediately. The Planning Book is complete and published with all the details of this event. Our show is in conjunction with the Yorkshire Terrier Club of the Carolinas. Our judges are Mr. Dana Plankey of Lynwood, WA for Conformation and Mrs. Sherri Spieth of Indiana for Sweepstakes. Our show in New York on February 9th was a great success. The total entry was 102 which was judged by Ms. Terri Lyddon of Rocheport, MO. The entry for Sweepstakes was 30 which was judged by Mrs. Pam Wengorovius. We held our members meeting with a quorum of about forty in attendance. Following the meeting, the awards were presented for Register of Merit and Top Winning, Best of Opposite, Top Sire, Top Dam and Top Breeders. We are so appreciative of the help of so many members for setting up, decorating the ring and helping with the silent auction and raffle basket table. Once again the Central Florida Yorkshire Terrier Club won the prize of $300 for the basket that sold the most tickets. This is the third year that this club has won.....they truly out did themselves. A special thank you to our talented member Roz May, who took charge of the 50:50 which made about $900 in total. It was a great weekend of beautiful dogs, great friends and good weather. On June 1 st we will welcome a new member to the Board of Directors, Judy Marksbury of Indiana. Please stay safe and stay well. Your Board of Directors 2019 - 2020 Leslie M. Stolfi, President Robbe Lyon, Vice President Matina E. Johnson, Secretary Melissa Jones, Treasurer Directors: Teresa Cuchiaro, Pamela Langstein Georgina Miller Helen Scott

If approved, it will be an additional class for clubs to offer at future shows. Update on 1+1 (entries of 1 Dog + 1 Bitch where Best of Winners is awarded a point): There has been an increase in number of instances of 1+1 entries. This has amounted to an average of 4.2 additional entries per all breed show. For dogs that have entered and find themselves in a 1+1 situation, the absentee rate has been reduced from 48% to 26%.
The combined impact of these two changes is that an average of 5.4 additional dogs are being shown per all-breed show. National Owner Handled Series Changes: There was discussion of proposed levels of achievement for the NOHS series. Based on a point schedule, levels would be Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Eligible dogs would be grandfathered in back to the beginning of the NOHS program. New Sport: A possible new sport is coming - AKC’s My dog’s Got Talent (MDGT), where a handler dog team will demonstrate their ability to perform a number of required and optional skills. The skills are a combination of those used in AKC Obedience, AKC Rally and AKC Trick Dog. If approved, MDGT events maybe held in conjunction with another event or as a stand-alone event. MDGT will have five titling classes in which club may offer any, or all, of the five classes. This sport will create fun for both handlers and dogs. ADJOURNMENT: As there was no further business, AKC Delegate Claudia Pierro made a motion to adjourn. Dave King seconded the motion. Meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m. for the Awards presentation immediately following. (Awards results included on the next two pages.) Respectfully Submitted, Matina E. Johnson Secretary Y.T.C.A., Inc

Class of 2024 : Dr. Carmen Battaglia, Delgate from the German Shepherd Dog Club of America Dr. Michael Knight Delegate from the Texas Kennel Club Carolyn M. McAteer, Delegate from the Irish Setter Club of America In addition, Dr. Thomas Davies, Springfield KC., was elected as the Chairman of the Board, and Dominic P. Carota (Pharaoh Hound Club of America) was elected as Vice Chairman of the Board at a meeting of the AKC Board of Directors convened after the Delegates Meeting. Respectfully submitted, Claudia Grunstra Pierro Dear friends, There are two additional areas of concern that need addressing. The first is about Event Application Fees. During this period due to the virus, clubs that have had their event cancelled due to facility/government actions or clubs that have proactively cancelled their event, the AKC will apply the cancelled event application fee to the club’s next event of the same type. The second question is if a cancelled Event makes a full refund to the exhibitor does the club need to pay a Recording/Service Fee, the answer is no they do not. I trust these responses are helpful as staff continues to listen and address our constituency’s questions. Please share. Call anytime. Dennis B. Sprung Office 212 696 8327 Cell 516 637 6567

Foundation News Mary Trimble The YTCAF and YTCA recently received the following two-year progress report on the PLE Study. Dr Simpson’s lab at Cornell University has collected 314 samples from Yorkshire Terriers. They have identified that 139 samples came from healthy dogs and 54 samples came from PLE affected dogs. The additional 121 samples are currently being classified based on evaluation of medical records. This is referred to as the “phenotype review” or verification of disease state versus healthy state. The next step is to complete the “genotyping”: the DNA sequencing. Then all of the data will be subjected to extensive analysis. You can help! The lab is still hoping to receive more samples during the final year of the study. RESEARCH PROGRESS REPORT SUMMARY Grant 02523-MOU: Identifying the Genetic Basis of Protein Losing Enteropathy in Yorkshire Terriers Principal Investigator: Kenneth Simpson, BVMS, PhD Research Institution: Cornell University Grant Amount: $46,440 Start Date: 3/1/2018 End Date: 2/28/2021 Progress Report: End-Year 2 Report Due: 2/29/2020 Report Received: 3/30/2020 (The content of this report is not confidential and may be used in communications with your organization.) Original Project Description:
Chronic intestinal disease associated with the loss of protein into the gut, termed protein losing enteropathy (PLE), is a severe, life threatening condition that affects many dog breeds, including the Yorkshire Terrier, Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, Basenji, Norwegian Lundehund, and Chinese Shar-Pei. The syndrome of PLE is most common in Yorkshire Terriers (4.2-10 fold relative risk), and affected dogs frequently suffer from severe weight loss, accumulation of fluid within tissues and body cavities, diarrhea, low levels of circulating proteins, increased risk for abnormal clotting, and derangements in vitamin and mineral homeostasis. The microscopic appearance of the small intestine of Yorkshire Terriers with PLE (YT-PLE) is distinct from PLE in other breeds, suggesting it is caused by a breed-specific genetic abnormality. Despite aggressive treatment, remission is variably achieved and relapse is common. Long-term survival is infrequent with recent studies indicating treatment failure in approximately 50% of Yorkshire Terriers with PLE. The high morbidity and mortality of YT-PLE indicates the desire to eradicate this disease through breeding practices. The investigators are seeking to identify genetic regions and genes associated with YT-PLE to enable prevention of this disease, provide insights into the development of PLE across species, and facilitate the discovery of more specific and effective therapies. Preliminary studies in their laboratory have linked several genetic regions to YT-PLE but additional genotyping of DNA samples from YT with and without PLE is required to enable definitive identification of causal abnormalities. Funding for the research is provided through the efforts and generosity of the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America and the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Foundation. The AKC Canine Health Foundation supports the funding of this effort and will oversee grant administration and scientific progress. Publications: None at this time. Presentations: None at this time. Report to Grant Sponsor from Investigator: We are moving from the sample recruitment phase of the study, seeking blood samples from as many Yorkshire Terriers with and without PLE as possible, to genotyping and analysis. We have now collected DNA samples from 314 YT with and without PLE. These samples were obtained from YT owned by members of the Yorkshire Terrier breed Club, patients evaluated at Cornell University Hospital and Cornell University Specialists, and direct submission to the Simpson laboratory. To date we have phenotypically verified DNA samples from 54 PLE (40% target) and 139 Healthy (68% of target) YT. We have DNA from an additional 121 YT that we are reviewing medical records to independently confirm disease phenotype. Once phenotype review is completed we will move to genotype the 163 new samples from YT and integrate those into a GWAS. We are still reaching out to Yorkie breeders, owners and veterinarians evaluating YT for PLE. Thank you to all who supported the Foundation’s September online auction! All proceeds go toward fulfilling our commitment to the PLE MOU with Dr. Simpson. As an update on the PLE MOU, in recent correspondence with Dr. Simpson, we have learned that the goal for samples is cause for concern. The original study was to include 100 PLE positive samples and 110 healthy control samples. As of September, Dr. Simpson had received 14 PLE samples and 23 healthy samples. We would again like to stress to all our fanciers that the hope of having a screening test can only be achieved by understanding the genetics involved. This requires samples. Samples come from our dogs….not only dogs with PLE, but also older dogs (over 10 yrs of age) with no history of GI disease. Collecting and submitting samples is easy to do. The form for submission along with instructions is on the Foundation website (ytcaf.org) or available by emailing me (lynworth2@comcast.net). For those who have submitted samples to Embark, you can allow those samples to be passed on to Dr. Simpson’s project by contacting Embark and giving your permission. Dollar donations are on track to meet our commitment. Next payments are due in the Spring. But we will need to remember the PLE project in our holiday giving and tributes in order to meet that goal.
Have you planned for your dogs? It’s never too soon to get your planning underway! You probably already have a plan for Staying At Home: having enough supplies on hand to care for your dogs without making extra trips out of the house, setting up an account with vendors for online shopping for supplies, setting up a maintenance schedule for grooming if you have someone else doing that for you. You may also already have an “emergency” plan to cover the day to day care of your dogs in the event that you cannot be home. If not, this would be the next step in planning for your dogs. Any time you are away from home longer than you expected, the emergency plan could be used to be sure that your canine family is cared for. Whether that is an unexpected traffic delay (major road closures and the like), unforeseen weather disaster, or medical emergency that prevents your timely return, a back-up plan is essential. Your emergency plan would include a Designated Person to coordinate the care of the dogs. This person might also be the main caretaker, but could be someone who would have a list of people to call on for assistance, especially if the emergency became long term. Your plan would include 1. written instructions about current diets (what and how much and how often) 2. medication (what, how much, how administered, where it is kept). 3. written identification of the dogs, whether that be a list of microchip numbers, tattoo markings, photos, or written descriptions of identifying characteristics. 4. information about individuals that require special care 5. if you have multiple dogs who are not housed together, include notes about any combinations that don’t get along with one another 6. If you use bedding that requires regular washing, include laundry instructions 7. Include waste disposal instructions Your emergency supplies would include at least 1. Enough food for two weeks 2. Enough water for two weeks 3. Enough medication for two weeks 4. List of supplies for the dogs and where to find them (bedding, leashes, grooming tools, crates, x-pens, etc) 5. Microchip reader if you use microchips to identify the dogs 6. List of contacts (names and phone numbers) for help assisting with the dogs 7. Your veterinarian’s name and phone number
This two-week supply of food, water, & medication is also a good idea in case of a disaster that requires you to shelter at home. Such disasters would include weather events, earthquakes, and pandemics. For the really long term…in the event you were unable to return to your dogs, additional information should be available to the Designated Person, in order that the dogs could be re-homed in a way that would be best for the dogs as well as the all the people involved. Prepare a “file” for each dog. The size of the file depends on what you want to convey: it could be anything from a single page with all the dogs listed, to a 3” x 5” card or a complete file folder for each dog. Include the information that is important for each dog.: the call name, spayed? A copy of the registration certificate OR Registered name and number, date of birth, breeder, sire/dam. Health issues if any. Vaccine history if you do your own. Other notes that would be important to a new owner. Also include contact information for anyone to whom you would like to offer right-of-first-refusal for each dog. For example, if there was a dog that was always a favorite of a friend, you might want to have the Designated Person contact them and offer the dog to them. Or, you might want to offer a dog back to its breeder. If you have friends “in dogs” (fellow club members?) who could help with the sorting and re-homing process, include their contact information in your long-term plan. Estate Planning… While you are thinking about planning, keep your dogs in mind when you do your estate planning and will. Set aside and designate funds for caring for the dogs until the re-homing process is completed. Your Designated Person might not be able to take on the day to day work for an extended period and a person might need to be hired to cover part or all of that time. Funds would also be needed for food and supplies. You may not be able to determine exactly how much to set aside, but estimate a little on the high side so that there will be no lapse in the care of your doggie family. Any remainder can be designated for a worthy cause. Consider the YTCAF as a beneficiary .
