So far it has been a pretty wet start to the year which is good for the garden and the farmers. I know we have had to dump several millimetres of water out of our pool which unfortunately goes to the creek, river and ultimately the ocean. Never mind the sea creatures are really enjoying the influx of a multitude food in various forms. The run for March was a total non-event. The e-mail I sent out to all and sundry looking for starters to attend the Annerley Artisan Market on the 27th March, I received 3 responses only and they were all negative – ie., they were unable to attend. I know we are going through difficult times, lock down – no, we are good to get up and go out etc, but this is the second run I personally have tried to get off the ground this year, with the first having only about 6 attendees and the latter, 3 negative responses only. Quite disappointing with a lack of people putting their hand up to organise a run. 4
NORTHSIDE NEWS - April 2021 On to a brighter note the run occurring this Saturday (10 th April) thanks to Jules looks and sounds like quite an enjoyable outing. Hope to see a number of you there. Our working party held a meeting on Wednesday 7th April to discuss the wording re life membership. It was a very productive meeting which all members are asked to read and state their position at the next meeting (ie., Wednesday 14th April). There is a distinct possibility we may have a need to arrange a couple of more seances in the future to review some aspects of the constitution. Cheers Kevin Club Runs April 5
NORTHSIDE NEWS - April 2021 May The proposed May Club run is a visit to the Ferny Grove Tramway Museum, Tramway Street, Ferny Grove, U.B.D map 137 L.3, on Sunday 16th May. The museum is only open on Sunday afternoons from 12.30pm to 4.00pm. Admission is $15 for adults, $12 concession, and $8 for children. This includes a tour of the Museum and as many rides on the old trams as you wish. We meet at the “ Wiseguy “ café in Albany Creek Market Place, Wruck Crescent, Albany Creek, U.B.D map 108 G.17, at 10.00am for morning tea, then depart about 11.00 am for Ferny Grove via Samford for a BYO picnic lunch in the Museum grounds. Soft drinks and light snacks are available in the Museum office. We have been given permission to park our cars within the safety of the Museum grounds. At lunch Kathy and I will hand out a sheet of trivia questions to test your knowledge on several topics and we have a small gift for the person with the most correct answers. If your Holden isn’t on the road the family hack is more than welcome. Cheers, Wilf. FJ Holden Taxi My father (Len Gillinder) bought a private taxi licence in 1953 and drove an FJ Holden in Brisbane as a cab from 1953 to 1960. He only drove at night because he wanted to practice golf during the day. He was a member of the Qld Golf Team at the Australian Amateur Championships in 1954. 6
NORTHSIDE NEWS - April 2021 In those days, after the pictures were out, Brisbane City was very quiet. I remember he used to get his fuel at either the Ascot Taxi base in Barry Parade in Fortitude Valley or at Barnes Auto on the corner of Adelaide and Wharf Sts. Even though the job was relatively safe he used to have a tyre lever handy beside his car seat. All fares were paid in cash – no credit cards or efpos. A few ‘ladies of the night’ might offer alternative payment methods. My brother and I were always keen to clean the inside of the cab on a Saturday morning, but first, checking for coins down the back seat. One incident during the night that I can recall him telling was he couldn’t get the cab into first gear. We lived at Bowen Hills so he reversed the car from the city to Bowen Hills and contacted a mechanic mate the next day. This story came from one of the Club's newest members, Ron Gillinder. Thanks and welcome, Ron. AL More History When Allan and Barb Benvenuti were recently visiting Barb's sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Malcolm, they came across this photo of Malcolm's mother as a bridesmaid outside her father's house beside his car (a late 20s/early '30s Essex?) in Taabinga Street, Wavell Heights, believed to be c1947. The house in the background to the right, on the corner of O'Donnell Street, was part of Hamlin's Nursery which operated until the late 1970s. Val & I own it. AL 7
