2 July 2020 President ’s Message Hello fellow Austin Newcomers. I hope you are enjoying this very tragic and unusual summer. I was born during the depression so have seen a lot of tragedy and feel that what our world needs now is compassion, kindness, and love of each other. This too shall pass, but let’s all pray that it leaves us better rather than worse. What I think we need is something different to think about right now. Since you may be new to Austin and/or Texas, and me being a native Texan, let’s have a lesson on Texas history. There may be a few things you didn’t already know. • The “Six” flags over Texas have been Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States, and United States. • The State Capital is made of pink granite and stands 7 ft. higher than the nation’s capital in Washington, D.C. • Texas is the only state to enter the U.S. by Treaty (known as the Constitution of 1845 by the Republic of Texas to enter the union) instead of by annexation. This allows the Texas flag to fly at the same height as the U.S. flag. • El Paso is closer to California than to Dallas. • The King Ranch in South Texas is larger than Rhode Island. • Texas has 17,000 miles of highway, enough to go from Texas to Beijing and back. • Two U.S. Presidents were born in Texas, and neither of them was named Bush. Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in Denton, and Lyndon B. Johnson was born in Stonewall, just one town over from Johnson City. • Texas is larger than any country in Europe, with an area of 268,820 sq. mi. • Amarillo is considered the “Helium Capital of the World”. A time capsule was sealed in the Helium Centennial Time columns monument in 1968 and contains a passbook to a bank account with $10, expected to be worth $1 quadrillion by the time it opens in 2968. • Dr. Pepper was invented in Texas in 1885. The recipe is a secret and is kept in two halves in safety deposit boxes located in two different Dallas banks. I hope you have found these facts, at least interesting. Keep your chin up and stay safe, we will get through this together. God bless you, be kind to each other, and hopefully this will be over soon and we can continue to have fun and make new friends through Austin Newcomers.
