November 2020 Newsletter NOVEMBER ZOOM MEETING Saturday, November 7 10 AM to 1 PM CARRIE IMAI: AKIM SCRIPT Please see details on the Carrie Imai following page. Please RSVP to SANDY DOERR at LetterRtist@aol.com or (714) 821-0784 by Wednesday, November 4, at 9 PM.
AKIM SCRIPT Zoom Class with Carrie Imai The Akim Script is a contemporary cursive hand designed by noted German calligrapher, Hans-Joachim Burgert. He became prominent in the mid-to-late 20th Century through his work and his teaching. In a letter to his students and the public at large, he posted a “Letter from Berlin” in which he expressed his perception that letterforms should convey not only a sense of the current time, but also of emotion. He was very much a modern letter artist based in traditional lettering but not hampered by it. Akim is a monoline cursive hand that is multi-dimensional, depending upon the style and variety of tools you use. It can be stretched, com- pressed and danced— a very liberating calligraphic hand that you will use over and over. - Carrie Imai
CHRIS’S CORNER OCSfC had a wonderful Zoom workshop wiith Nina Tran on October 3 and 4. We had 34 attendees, including new mem- bers from Washington, Illinois, New Jersey, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, Mumbai and Indonesia. Thank you all for attending. I would like to thank Sandy Doerr (OCSfC’s Program Chair) for calligraphing all of the names on the SfC Appreciation Certificates. I would also like to thank Jennifer Padilla (SfC President) for mailing out each individual SfC Appreciation Certificate to the recipients. It is good to give back by being a part of SfC: Board of Governors, SfC Supporting Volunteers, Regional and Chapter Boards, and their Supporting Volunteers. There is always room for volunteers. If you want to help, please feel free to contact me. We are looking forward to seeing you at our free OCSfC pro- gram on November 7 via Zoom. In order for you to be con- firmed as an attendee and receive an e-mail with the Zoom ID number and password, there is a lot of work to be done in advance. REPORT ON NINA TRAN’S COPPERPLATE WORKSHOP by Darshini Aithal I was the lucky winner or a scholarship from the Orange County Society for Calligraphy which allowed me to attend the two-day Copperplate workshop with Nina Tran. The workshop was well-structured and had a welcome video that outlined the upcoming course content. Nina gave us printable guide sheets, a list of supplies, and an Introduction to Copperplate handbook. On the first day, we started with warm-ups, where we learned about finger, wrist, forearm and combined movement, and a brief history of the origins of Copperplate. The script that she taught us is based on the Zanerian Manual. The majority of class time was dedicated to the minuscules, where we learned about the structure of the alphabet, including the ratio, angle, movement, and pressure, plus tine movement and more. After understanding these guidelines, we delved into the nuances of each alphabet, followed by drills and rules about spacing. On the second day, we focused on the majuscules, with detailed explana- tions about their intricacies and the techniques that they require. Nina also shared some of her work as inspiration for the class. She has even made recordings of the workshop available to us for the rest of October. Holistically, it was an enriching and rewarding experience. My journey with calligraphy started many years ago when I was in college, but Copperplate was never part of the curriculum. Last year, however, Barbara Close introduced me to the pointed pen and Copperplate. Recently, I have been enamored by its delicate form. This workshop was perfect for me! It was technical, interesting, and informative. It explained all the fundamentals of Copperplate. I’m looking forward to practicing and improving my skills, as well as refining my script. Nina’s website is http://anintran.com. You can follow her on Instagram (@anintran), where you can see her work, watch her demos, and attend Q&A sessions every Wednesday at 6:30 a.m.
FROM A NEW MEMBER I live in New Jersey. I joined OCSfC to take Nina’s class, but I am also interested in taking other classes as long as it’s through Zoom. That’s the best thing that happened because of the pandemic. I only started pointed pen calligraphy in February of this year. I have been so fortu- nate to find many of my calligraphy friends through Instagram. I am still learning (I guess learning never ends) and practicing. I am looking for- ward to learning with this guild. I had heard about Nina’s class being hosted by SfC through an Instagram calligrafriend. I had tried to sign up for Nina’s bootcamp classes a few time in the past, but her classes had been sold out literally within a few seconds when it opened up for registration. So when I heard about SfC hosting her class, I immediately contacted Gerry, whose name was on the contact list on the website. Then Gerry helped me sign up for the class and I joined this guild. Nina’s class was, as I imagined, fantastic! I love her teaching style and her aesthetics so much. It was such a satis- fying class. I joined Kalli Camp Academy (kallicampacademy.com), as well, and enjoyed every class. Below are examples of some of the things I did with Kalli Camp. Tico Kanzaki Ornaments Blank floral cards Wreaths

Our study group, “Inspired Artists,” started a new project. Each artist picks a subject for a book and selects the paper for pages in the size they pick. Their book goes from artist to artist, each one creating a book page inspired by the subject. It’s been great seeing the differ- ent interpretations and the beautiful art each subject brings. I’ve attached photos of a couple I just did. One is for Chava Gerber’s book on World Travel and the other is for Joan Hawks, whose subject is her garden. - Carrie Imai Jackie Doll, from Edmonton, who is a regular participant at Letters, has been busy taking Zoom Same classes with Barbara class Close (Copperplate in the Garden), Marina evening Soria (The Empty from Space, Womb of 6 pm to Shape), Carol 8 pm PST DuBosch (Uncial on and Italic), Rachel Dec. 2. MINA TAYLOR’S OCTOBER ZOOM WORKSHOP From Donna DeRemigis: Thanks for a great workshop. You are a great instructor. Note to Mina Taylor from Elizabeth Walsh: Thanks so much for the class today. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well organized. Well paced. Nice balance of lettering with water- colors! You did a very fine job! Good to see a few familiar faces in the “zoomroom” and I learned a few new tips, too, from you as well as those who shared. Risa Gettler
