4 FRIENDSHIP FUN AWARDS NTCA Corner Dear Callers, Cuers, and Dancers, The time we’ve all been waiting for is finally here! I realize some of you brave souls never missed a beat but the ma- jority of us who have been waiting for the time when we would feel safe to begin square/round dancing again are definitely doing a happy dance! With Swingtime Center opening up this month, I’m hoping this is just the begin- No Friendship Fun Awards ning and the remainder of our dancing facilities will soon were processed this month. be opening up as well. I know many of you have already received the Covid vac- cine and those that haven’t have registered and are on the waiting list. With the increase in doses being delivered to our state, I hope those of you still waiting will get your appointment soon. Although I have had mine and Texas has lifted the mask mandate, I will continue masking up until such time as the science and medical experts deem it safe to discontinue. I realize this is a personal prefer- ence but I want to do all I can to see that this horrible pandemic which has cost so many lives is something we no longer have to worry about. Knowing we can all gath- er, dance, and celebrate without worry is what I’m most looking forward to. We have many important dances this month which are taking place at Swingtime Center. If you haven’t been dancing, I hope you will feel comfortable coming out for any and/or all of these dances. Things will be different but NORTEX CLUB VISITS AWARDS that’s okay. Getting dancers back on the floor is the most important thing and I hope it is for you as well. I don’t have information on any other facilities opening up at this NONE time but I’m sure we will be hearing about them very soon. Be on the lookout for ads in the Promenade, emails, or phone calls on any upcoming dances in area. Linda and I have missed all of you and hope to see your Keep Visiting and Collecting Dangles smiling faces soon! Friendship Travel Officer Once again, keep a smile on your face and a song in your James & Carolyn Ehlinger heart and let the world see the happy in you! 408 Turnstone Dr Little Elm, TX 75068 972.861.9731 ce2je12@gmail.com Ray Savell NTCA President 4

20 WILLIAM HUGH EZELLE (SONNY) beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully in Gilmer, Texas on March 7th, 2021. He was born on April 24,1937 in Montgomery, Alabama to Mattie Ezelle Ferguson. Sonny graduated high school from Strong, Arkansas and the University of Southern Arkansas with a degree in business. During his educational journey he worked in the oilfields as a rough neck. Upon college graduation he began his first professional desk job with Firestone. He stayed at that job for about one hot minute and went back to the work he loved - the oilfield. Sonny worked as an oilfield equipment salesman in Longview, for over 50 years. He retired at the age of 81. He drove about 6,000 miles every month to care for his cus- tomers. He always knew where the cookies, cakes and pies were and would often show up at lunch. He for sure had a sweet tooth! He loved to cook and did fish fries for charities, birthdays, and customers in a “cook shack” that would heat up to the point he used a water hose to keep the floor cool enough to stand on. In 1982, he married the love of his life, Charlotte Falconer Ezelle. He got a bonus of two stepsons, Paul and Matt who enriched his life. Charlotte and Sonny enjoyed their shared hobby cueing and teaching round dances through the Southern States. He was a man of God, in large part due to Charlotte, and was steady and devout in his belief of and quest to know Jesus. Sonny began his dancing adventure in Arkansas while taking square dance lessons with Billy & Bobbie Ruth Webb. After being transferred to Longview, he continued square dancing and was introduced to round dancing. Sonny, Bob Wilder, and Leland Neeley taught themselves to cue and teach. Sonny taught lessons several nights a week in Sulphur Springs, Winnsboro, and Quitman. He was probably the most patient person in the world while guiding dancers through round basics. He firmly believed in drill, drill, drill, until you get it right. If you were one of his students, you probably never want to hear “Pretty Baby” or Side-Close-Side-Touch ever again. He was passionate about teaching and after retiring, he often said he missed the teaching and the people. Sonny would memorize the material as he was learning the dance. He spent hours studying the cue sheet and practic- ing the figures until it was committed to memory. This probably worked to his benefit when some of you crazy callers would try to break him down while cueing (you know who you are). Of course, it was all done in fun. He would say there are some things that took place on the stage that the general public probably didn’t need to know about. Sonny was a very humble man. He always took the attitude that he was just the “Hired Help” and it was his job to make sure the dancers had a good time and learned a little something in the process. He was very passionate about encouraging new instructor couples. Many of these couples received their first $1.00 for cueing from Sonny. It gave him a lot of sat- isfaction to watch these instructor couples expand the activity through their teaching & cueing. Sonny and Charlotte traveled Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Colorado doing dance festivals, dance in- stitute weeks and weekends. He cued for all the square dance clubs in the East Texas area on a regular basis. He was honored by the Good Times, Ltd. Square Dance Club on their 30th. Anniversary for being their only club cuer all those years and they hosted the last dance he officially cued, when he retired. Sonny belonged to Roundalab, East Texas Callers Association, East Texas Cuers Association and Texas Round Dance Teachers Association. Sonny & Charlotte received The Maestro Plus designation for 40 years of Teaching Round Dancing from Roundalab. He wrote an article for the Texas Round Dance Teachers Association Newsletter. The article ended with: Let us en- courage our dancers, seasoned and new, to realize that the strong suit of dancing is the people it brings together and the dancing is just the icing on the cake. It matters not if you are a Challenge Square Dancer / Phase 5-6+ Round Dancer. it’s the lifelong friendships you make through the activity. 20
