Keep in mind if you opt for remote, your classes will not change. SGO FRESHMEN APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE!!! - Are you a freshman looking for a way to voice your opinion? Are you looking to make a difference in Brooklyn Tech? Well, look no further! The Student Government Organization (SGO) is now accepting Freshman Class Council applications for the 2020-2021 school year via an online application. The deadline for applying is October 12, 2020. COVID Screening - All COVID screening forms can be emailed to Ms. Blankson at NBlankson@schools.nyc.gov . 504s - Please be informed that whether your child had a 504 plan last academic school year or not, a new set of forms must be submitted for review. If the proper forms aren't submitted, the 504 plan will not be reviewed. The process of review begins within 30 days of when the academic school year begins (9/21/20) and upon receipt of proper documentation. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to Mr. Ventura at JVentura2@schools.nyc.gov . Over the weekend, the Brooklyn Tech Debate team participated in the Yale University Invitational. In the Junior Varsity Division, team Gabrielle Cayo and Roberto Quesada finished as quarterfinalists in a division of 163 entries. Congratulations to the Yale team! The debate team will next participate in the Nova Titan Invitational. Wish them luck! ASTRONOMY CLUB - Are you fascinated by the night sky and the universe around us? Do you want to learn more about astronomy and the night sky? Then join the Astronomy Club! We discuss topics across the entire field of astronomy and current events & discoveries. Hello ALL artists! It's October, which means InkTober starts!! What is InkTober you may ask? InkTober is a month-long art challenge full of drawing & inking! For every day in the month of October, everyone participating in the InkTober challenge will create one drawing in ink while following the prompt for the day. And as the BTHS Media Club, we're rewarding +10pts for every drawing (up to 31) that you create during InkTober! Your artwork must follow the prompts, and there can't be duplicates of the same prompts! We're also going to showcase the best pieces from every week on our Instagram! If your piece is chosen to be showcased, you'll be rewarded an extra +100pts! Reminders FOR THOSE IN BLENDED LEARNING ONLY - If you are entering the building on or after October 1st, you will need to fill out the NYC Health Screening survey EACH TIME you enter the building. The link for the survey is here. The third option allows you to save the link as an app icon on your home screen which makes it very convenient to access. Sitting With Seniors is recruiting members! This is a club dedicated to volunteering with senior citizens throughout the boroughs. It's a great opportunity for you to "meet" new people and work on your communication skills. Give back to your community and be someone they can look forward to seeing! We will continue this club over zoom meetings with the elderly once or twice a month on Fridays at 2:00 P.M. Society of Women Engineers is currently recruiting members! Interested in STEM? Want to learn how to build your own website? Struggling in a STEM class? Seeking to build connections and confidence? Join now! At SWE, we are envisioned to empower our STEM knowledge, explore the world around us, and we offer STEM help to students struggling in STEM classes! In the past, we've been to trips like Buzzfeed and Columbia University to explore the many STEM opportunities out there, and this year will be filled with amazing plans, the biggest being creating your own website! In addition, we will be having small group discussions, educational games, and exciting hands on experience! We are the Brooklyn Tech Model United Nations Team and we are more than happy to announce that the BTHS Model UN team will continue its reign throughout this year's uncertain times! Our team is looking forward to seeing new and returning members grow and develop their skills and passions while going remote. Model United Nations is an activity combining politics, the sciences, international affairs, and human rights, truly a global activity for students looking to get a bit of everything, in MUN students are tasked with representing countries while working with global issues to come to a resolution. While also being an enjoyable activity, members of MUN regularly compete against other schools for awards and honors, our team alone holds over 160 awards. Our passionate coaches and executive members are prepared to help members improve their public speaking, research, writing, and cooperation skills in order to make everyone an award-winning member. MUN is more than an activity, it's a hobby that overtime has connected a tight-knit and welcoming team and we hope to grow that this year! We will let you know when balancing is complete. Thank you. OTHER OPPORTUNITIES GirlGenix is a non-profit youth organization to unite young girls interested in pursuing careers in STEM. We know that females are constantly experiencing gender inequalities, especially when obtaining jobs and gaining new learning opportunities. Our mission is to ensure that young girls are not discouraged from going into the STEM field if they are truly passionate about it. We offer tutoring and mentoring as well as share personal stories to create a virtual community for the female youth in STEM. By providing a completely virtual platform, we aim to help girls in middle school and high school with their educational journeys to a STEM career. GirlGenix is a great opportunity for students to build their resume and college application during a time when many activities are being closed off. Project DOT Paid Internship Registration Deadline: Oct. 1, 2020 Event: Oct. 8, 2020- Feb. 25, 2021 Contact: Gena Jefferson/646-819-9596; gjefferson@svfreenyc.org Project Dream.Own.Tell (DOT) is a teen dating violence prevention paid internship for LGBTQIA+ youth ages 16 and up. Participants will learn about topics such as healthy relationships, consent, and bystander engagement as well as create a social media campaign for their peers and a community mobilization project. YVote Forums Deadline: ASAP Event: September 2020-May 2021 Contact: Sanda Balaban/917-543-8350 2020 is a big election year in the United States and we need students to be part of it. Join YVote to be part of a youth social change movement organized around voting-and holding elected officials accountable-for issues you care about like inequality, criminal, climate, gender, immigration, and racial justice. YVoters can choose from two tracks of online forums to be part of this fall: the monthly Activist Track or the biweekly Leadership Track where students are eligible to receive a stipend. Use the resources of New-York Historical to conduct exciting research and share your scholarship through creative digital projects. Meet with professional staff to learn about careers in the museum, library, and history fields; work collaboratively with fellow students to develop public speaking and leadership skills; and engage in hands-on work to deepen your understanding of American history and art. The theme of the program is We the People: Democracy from Athens to America. Interns with demonstrated financial need may be offered a stipend to participate. Unpaid internships will be provided for all other accepted students, with the option to receive community service hours or school credit. 2021-2022 Mayor's Graduate Scholarship Program Application Open Mayor's Graduate Scholarship Program (MGSP) Scholarship help is available for City employees who want to pursue a graduate degree, but you must apply soon! The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) is accepting applications for the 2021-22 Mayor's Graduate Scholarship Program (MGSP). This is a competitive program - a limited number of scholarships are available. Citywide deadline for City employees to apply through their Agency Personnel Office is November 16, 2020. Some agencies might have earlier/later submission dates. Check with your Agency Personnel Office regarding agency-specific deadlines. To compete for a scholarship, you must: • Be a full-time City employee • Have a bachelor's degree by the start of the fall 2021 semester • Be willing to pursue a graduate degree on your own time • Meet other requirements, as explained at www.nyc.gov/mgsp .Scholarships will be offered for classes that begin in the fall of 2021.
