All community members are reminded that for the safety of our students, and to ensure a smooth traffic flow around our school, to please show respect for council laws at this busy time of day. Council inspectors regularly police our surrounding roads in the mornings and afternoons to ensure our students are protected from drivers who think that council laws don’t include them.
PRINCIPAL’S DESK SCHOOL FEES IN 2019 The Finance subcommittee of School Council has reviewed the family charges for books, materials and voluntary contributions, recommending to School Council that our fee structure and charges include a small increase of $10 and include the cost of $10 for Mathletics. School Council is committed to keeping any increases to a minimum whilst at the same time being mindful that our fees have remained unchanged for the last two years. We ask our community to continue to support the school by contributing financially to high quality educational programs and enable us to provide materials and resources well above the standard curriculum we are funded for. Parent payments for ‘Essential Items’ are used to support all learning areas inclusive of: Art materials, English, Mathematics and Inquiry learning materials, Science consumables, sports equipment, digital technologies (desktops and laptops) and printing consumables, photocopying of learning tasks, access to software (including Mathletics and Reading Eggs) and so on. We can only provide these items with a contribution from families, as they are not included in the funding we are provided as a government school to implement the standard curriculum. School Council have discussed at length how we can maintain the high standards that exist here at Templeton. This is where you can help with the voluntary payments towards either the (tax deductable) Building Fund, or making a donation. The grounds and the working conditions in the classroom that the children enjoy - all fully air conditioned and heated - are not standard at all state schools, and have either been budgeted for or fundraised. Contributions for next year are increasingly important as we look to complete a masterplan of our school site in order to plan for our learning needs in the near future. Further details regarding our masterplan will be shared early next year. INTERN PRINCIPAL AT TEMPLETON This week we welcome Kellie Stewart to Templeton. Mrs Stewart, who is a Prep Coordinator and Learning Specialist at Mount View Primary School, and an ex student at Templeton, is participating in a Principal development program for aspiring principals in the Victorian education system. Mrs Stewart, will be shadowing our Management team and spending time learning how we operate. It has also been insightful for our staff to learn about how another large, high performing school operates and already we are benefiting from her insights. Mrs Stewart will be with us for the next two weeks and will return for the latter part of Term 1 in 2019. Please join with me in welcoming her to Templeton. PAST STUDENTS Jack Lucas is a past student of Templeton Primary School who last week was elected as 2019 School Captain, at Emmaus College. All of us at Templeton congratulate and wish him well in this role. If anyone has any information about the achievements of our past or present students, I would love to hear about them so we can all celebrate their success.
PRINCIPAL’S DESK OUR UNIFORM I’ve had a couple of queries regarding our school uniform recently regarding the colouring on our school uniform shoes. I take this opportunity to remind all parents that our uniform policy states that they must be all black shoes, not black with white soles or a white tick; all black. This is a great support to parents who are constantly asked by their children to buy the Nike, or Addidas half black, half multi-coloured runners! Please feel free to use the line: Mr McKinlay said….. when being pestered about this next time you go to buy school shoes. Please also be mindful that on the first day back in 2019, I have asked our teachers to check all our uniforms to ensure that all students are wearing it correctly so we all start the year off on the right foot – so to speak! Students out of uniform will be given a letter addressed to the parents outlining the reasons for an out of uniform notice. We are very proud and respectful of our uniform here at Templeton; it is well known in the Knox and outer east community and we ask that parents continue to support the high expectations we have of our students in ensuring that it is worn correctly at all times. NEW FENCING CLUB AT TEMPLETON From next year we have a new hiring group who will be providing fencing lessons in our GP room from 6pm to 8pm each Monday and Friday evening. Please see the flier in this Newsletter or at reception for further details. THIS WEEK’S CLASSROOM VISIT — WALKATHON! After such a wonderful day last week where the students and teachers walked together to raise money for our school programs, I encourage all parents to return their walkathon forms with the money collected as soon as possible. I thank all members of our community for the support they give our school, both in terms of money and to the parents who donated their morning and cooked sausages for the 750 students and teachers! Thank you!
PRINCIPAL’S DESK MATHS TIPS FOR PARENTS I thought I would include over the next couple of weeks a few tips for parents who would like some ideas on how to help their children with Maths. This week I include ideas for Prep to Grade 2 and I’II follow up with Grade 3 to 6 in the next edition. Hope they help you! Prep – Grade 2 Playing shop, talk about how we pay for items using notes and coins Make paper money or use play money to buy and sell goods from the ‘shop’ When unpacking the shopping order food items by height or by cost Introduce kitchen scales to weigh some foods such as a box of tea bags or rice, then order by weight Play I Spy or other games to identify shapes, numbers and patterns Dice are a great resource. Roll the dice and say, make or write the numbers identified, roll the dice and add the numbers together to find the total Identify and explain visual patterns on clothing, wrapping paper, crockery, cards and furniture Use coloured pegs, blocks or beads to begin a patter for your child to continue Encourage your child to draw, create and describe their own patterns. Use them for borders or greeting cards. Cut a piece of string for your child, any length will do. Use the string to measure the objects in your house to find out what is longer or shorter than your string measuring tape. Explore other ways of measuring using a cup, jug, teaspoon, icy pole sticks, footprints or hand lengths Find numbers around you, for example house numbers, calendars Look at and say the number son car number plates, signs, calendars, newspapers, shopping catalogues, speed signs, house numbers Use different numbers as the starting point for practising counting, for example start counting from 6 or 10. Ask your child to count forwards and backwards. Ask what number comes before or what number comes after Turn everyday events into a maths story: count the fruit in the fruit bowl, cut fruit into six pieces, add the total of cutlery at the table Talk about the number of things, for example there are five pieces of fruit in our bowl. Three are apples and two are bananas How many throws can we do without dropping the ball? How many jumps does it take to get to…? How many times can you tap the balloon before it touches the ground? Use playing cards, play matching games, put cards in order from largest to smallest by counting the shapes or using the numbers on the cards Look at and talk about sports scores Collect and read recipes, discuss the use of fractions, millilitres and grams, encourage your child to make accurate measurements using measuring cups and spoons Discuss how you could double a recipe Identify the temperature and cooking time of the recipe Estimate the cost to buy all of the ingredients

This year we are again supporting the Uniting’s Food for Families annual appeal (previously Wesley Mission). All classrooms will be given a large box and until December 7th we are collecting non-perishable items like tinned foods and toiletry items. Anything that needs refrigeration is not appropriate. The collected items will go towards families who are struggling to make ends meet. Last year we filled 36 boxes and helped to feed many families over a year. This year we hope to make an even bigger contribution the appeal. So check those pantries or perhaps buy an extra item or two in your family’s next grocery shop! Thanks from the Student Council. Mrs Ayse Bavage
GRADE 2 BUTTERFLY INCURSION As part of our science topic on “Life Cycles” the Grade 2 children last week were lucky to participate in a Butterfly Incursion. The Butterfly Lady, Sharon, brought in all her beautiful butterflies for us to learn about. The children got to hold them and even let some of the butterflies land on them! One of our children was transformed into a giant butterfly! We all had a wonderful time experiencing the delicate beauty of these creatures.
