From the Principal Tena Koutou Katoa, Talofa Lava, Malo e lelei, Dia Duit, Dear Parents, Guardians & Whānau, 2020 has been a tremendously challenging year in so many ways. However, there is always lots to be thankful for and we as a community have grown stronger together as a result. I am very proud of what we have achieved when faced with adversity. Our girls and teachers showed strength in resilience, thinking past themselves and continued to have strong faith. It was this strength that gave us all the ability to sustain the positive energy and ongoing care and concern for those around us. The Gospel values that became our focus this year were Aroha and Hope. I believe it is all our Gospel Values that give our girls the extra resilience that is needed by our young people in todays society. Aroha and Hope allowed us to live out our theme this year of ‘Hearts for the World’. As an RNDM school we receive a strong spiritual foundation and values formation. We are thought to strive for personal excellence, learn respect for others, have respect for creation and the environment and always have a heart for the world. Our Prizegiving and Thanksgiving Mass were as always, enjoyable events showcasing our girls achievements. In all areas of school life, be they academic, arts, cultural or sporting, we have witnessed effort and achieve- ment which is worthy of celebration. As a small integrated girls school, we continue to perform at a very high level in all areas. This is a clear indication of the quality people we have in our midst and the support the school gets from our wonderful community. As we look ahead towards 2021, our focus will continue to ensure that we are the school of choice for our Catholic families. We have a beautiful and spiritual environment with good teaching facilities. We have outstanding people and a culture where it is cool to succeed and celebrate success. We have a happy school and one where there is a pride of belonging. It is a great place to be, made all the better by the quality of our people. To everyone who has been associated with the school this year, may I offer to you all my thanks for your contribution and my best wishes for a safe, happy Christmas and a wonderful summer holiday. God Bless Maria Neville-Foster Principal

Special Character Sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation were received by students on the 15th of November, at St. Patrick’s Church during the 10.00 am Mass. The Church was filled with families of the students receiving the Sacraments and other students who came to support them. Great celebration by all. Labyrinth The Labyrinth was created by the Spirit of Sacred Heart students and was blessed by Father Trung on the top green. The senior students have used the labyrinth as a prayer space for quiet reflection before their exams. Tom Silverwood - Director of Religious Studies Giving Tree The Giving Tree is up in the Mission Centre. Students, staff and families have been bringing in an item of non-perishable food and a toy for a child. We will be giving these to St. Vincent De Paul to distribute to families in need over Christmas. Thank you for your generosity. Retreats The Year 13 Retreat was a great day; the students welcomed Bridget Kelly-Lowe (ex-student) and Father Trung as guest speakers. The Staff Retreat was combined with the staff of St John’s College and led by Murray Adams and Nicola McCarthy. Our staff enjoyed the day which turned out to be timely event. The focus for the day was encounters with Christ. Hopefully, this will become an annual event. The Year 9 Retreat had the theme of “Hope,” and the Year 10 retreat was on “Equity and Respect.” Sister Helen O’ Sullivan spoke to the Year 9 students about how the Mission Sisters bring Hope to the world followed by Father Trung who said Mass for them. Teresa Shanks, who is the Caritas representative for the Diocese of Palmerston North, spoke to the Year 10 students on Equity and Equality.

Y10 Camp This year our Y10 Camp was at the Tuki Tuki Christian Camp. Our girls took part in Archerysoft and Raft Building on the Clive river run by instructors from YMCA Hawke’s Bay. They also did some Orienteering at Te Mata Peak run by Hawke’s Bay Orienteering. It was a great experience for our girls to learn about the surrounding area and take part in some activities that they had never done before. Some of the feedback from our girls was that they really liked the team building aspect and getting to know their peers better, all without their phones for most of the camp. The biggest learning from camp for a few students was getting to sleep early so they had enough energy to tackle challenges the next day. Well done girls and a big thank you to our staff who were able to help out during the two days, we appreciate your time and effort.
Safer Routes to School This term we have been working with Napier City Council and a local research company FOLKL to improve student safety when travelling to school. A group of senior and junior students were invited to have their say and give their input on the roads around SHC, including the pros and cons on the different ways they get to school. We are hoping to encourage more of our school whānau to choose active forms of A big thank you to the Fisher transport such as walking, scootering and cycling. family for kindly donating boxes Our communities feedback is important to this project and we of apples each week. From the Classroom This has been the first year of the Year 9 Drama option for our students and despite the challenges that 2020 put up, it has been an absolute joy to teach. The first option started brilliantly but ended in lockdown – the girls managed their assessment by video recording monologues. The second option started in lockdown learning about Greek and Maori theatre traditions and then came back to the classroom, ending with short script performances. The third and fourth options finished with a wonderful student-led interpre- tation of the witches’ scenes from Macbeth. I have seen our students gain confidence, take risks, collaborate, and engage in moments of fun and real joy. In 2021 the Year 9 option will be taught by Mrs Howlett and Year 10 by myself and Mrs Heather Read. We cannot wait! Mrs. Jo Jowett-Morel Artist of the Month Artist of the Month: Eva Wright
Final Message from our House Leaders It has been a such privilege this year for us to be the Holderness house leaders. As we both started our SHC schooling in the green colour, it made it all the more special that we are able to finish our SHC final year in green. This year our house goals were focused around our flax bush ethos. At the beginning of the year the Holderness leadership cohort came up with the analogy Whakatipu Wahine Kaha ‘Growing strong women’, represented by the Harakeke plant. We understood the green colour as a symbol of growth in which we have watched each and every one of our girls achieve this year. Although this year’s house events were hugely affected by 2020’s issues, in the events we did manage to have, we couldn’t be more thankful for the effort and participation from our girls. Through this role we have both learnt to expect the unexpected and how to lift the spirits of those who were looking up to us, to lead them in times of strife (e.g. COVID19). We would like to take this opportunity to thank our green team for your participation, spirit and culture that you all brought to our year. Both our seniors and our juniors have supported one another with passion and pride for themselves, each other and most importantly their house! Through your sheer determination and drive to win, we as house captions are proud no matter the overall placings. Thank you to all the girls who helped us out this year, we could not have done it without you. Most importantly a massive thank you to Mrs. Jamieson for putting in 200%, working with us behind the scenes making everything possible, your help has been massively appreciated. We have no doubt that our beloved Holderness will be left in the best hands next year and for that we wish you all the best. Kelsie Hawkins & Anna Restieaux Holderness House Leaders 2020 Tasha Taii and I, Ana Worthington, had the privilege of being the Marian house leaders for 2020. While it was a great challenge due to Covid19, it was an amazing opportunity for us to connect with our Sacred Heart sisters as well as the other leaders. Both Tasha and I are extremely proud of the girls in our house for the amount of effort they gave in our house events which has resulted in very good results for Marian. We wish the leaders for next year all the best and hope that they are able to implement the same house spirit that we have seen throughout this very challenging year. We would also like to extend our appreciation towards the tutor teachers who have supported us throughout this year and to Mrs McFarland, for her amazing commitment to our house as our dean for 2020. Overall, this year has been a true Ana Worthington & Tasha Taii challenge for us all but we have pushed through Marian House Leaders 2020 and been able to have an amazing year nonetheless.
