FEBRUARY 2021 Webber Middle School PAGE 2 Principal’s Pen The Webber community is filled with amazing, patient, and kind people. I can only imagine how the changes between phases have impacted families, yet everyone continues to make the adjustments. The Webber staff and I are committed to providing the best education, no matter what phase. The staff continues to reflect on what we are doing well and what we can improve. We will be asking more from students during phase 3 (hybrid). We are going to ask all students to be a part of the class each day. Whether they are at home or in person, our teachers are going to engage with them. This will look slightly different from subject to subject, but the bare minimum will be that all students check-in for a warm-up question and attendance. The teachers will be communicating with students about their expectations for engagement. At some point, we could move to phase 4. This phase has all students returning to school five days a week. My leadership team and I are planning for the safe return for all staff and students to a more “normal” school routine. All students and staff will be expected to wear masks, be encouraged to wash their hands, and do our best to distance students in the classrooms, hallways, and lunch. I am looking forward to the day when we will have all students back in school. I will be communicating with families and students before the shift to phase 4. Thank you, Webber community, for your incredible support during the entire school year. Please take care of yourself and your families. Mr. Davis
FEBRUARY 2021 Webber Middle School PAGE 3 NPFH Webber Middle School has become a No Place for Hate School. What is NPFH? No Place for Hate® is an initiative of the Anti- Defamation League offered free to schools. With public displays of hate on the rise, it is more important than ever for schools to commit to programs that clearly define expectations in behavior for all members of the community. Whether you are a student, educator, or family member, you have a role to play in combating bias and bullying as a means to stop the escalation of hate. Webber has formed a committee to implement the No Place For Hate® mission. The initiative is designed to rally the entire school around the goal of creating a welcoming community committed to stopping all forms of bias and bullying. Throughout the rest of this school year, and years to come, there will be activities with intention to create an inclusive environment and diminish hate in our school. All students and families with have opportunity to participate in the program and activities. Please contact Mrs. Broste ebroste@psdschools.org or Ms. Nestle mnestle@psdschools.org if you are interested in this group. Meetings will be Friday’s at noon.
FEBRUARY 2021 Webber Middle School PAGE 4 Lost or Missing Books? Missing Library and Textbook information: What to do if your student has lost a book and how do you know? Your student *may* have received an email notifying you of a lost library book fine. Listed in the body of the email is the title of the book/material and the price of the book. All items checked out to your student’s account can be found using the OPAC system. Log in with student username and password. All materials are listed under: My Account > My Borrowing be sure to check both fine and loan. https://lib.psdschools.org/Library/Home Now what? It is your student’s responsibility to return the listed materials. Students may return both media center and classroom novels at our curbside checkout location. We have a Library return tub located near the building doors by the South bike racks 8-3 on weekdays. They may also return the materials to the front office between the hours of 8 to 3 on weekdays. If your student has library books they checked out from last school year, you may notice they have been marked lost and a fine is associated with those books. If you can locate the book, we'd love to get it back for the next student! Just return and we can remove the lost fine. We will even happily take your elementary library books and send them back for you! If the materials are truly lost, you may pay for the materials via SchoolPay. https://www.psdschools.org/schoolpay If you see a lost/damage fine on your student’s account, but it is not showing up in SchoolPay, please email: webberms@psdschools.org and we can work with Webber’s office manager to get it added to SchoolPay. • Media and library books: webberms@psdschools.org • Textbooks and classroom novels: please contact that specific teacher
FEBRUARY 2021 Webber Middle School PAGE 5 Spring Athletics I know many of you have been waiting to hear about sports at the middle school level. As of today, January 15, here is what I can tell you regarding sports at Webber and in PSD. Our spring sports season is still a go at this time. That means that girls softball, boys and girls golf, and track are slated to happen right now if conditions continue to allow. As we all know, conditions can change rather quickly, so please stay connected to Webber for the latest sports updates. So, it is with excitement that I am here to tell you that SportsEngine registration and Schoolpay for Girls Softball will open on February 1st and stay open until March 5th. Please make sure your sports physicals are up to date and we have a copy of them on file in our office. Mrs. Schmieden (499-7804) can help with any questions you may have with the registration process. Protocols and guidelines to participate will be coming soon. Please stay tuned to our website for more details! Golf and track information will be coming as those seasons get closer. As for other sports, I do not have anything else to share at this time. Finally, I want to thank you all for your support and patience during these challenging times. As I have stated before, as the Athletic Director I believe sports play an integral part in a child’s life. Our coaches and I want sports back as much as anyone else. I also want to ensure that our athletes, coaches, and spectators are protected, and safe at events. We will be back, and I believe that time is on the horizon. Thank you. Mr. Kind Athletic Director Webber Middle School

FEBRUARY 2021 Webber Middle School PAGE 7 Honors English Students in Dr. Hollingsworth's Honors English 8 class are learning various strategies for writing original poetry. During a recent lesson, they discussed how poetry can be a peaceful and ethical platform for sharing perspectives regarding current social events. Students were tasked with reading news articles to learn more about particular issues and generating original poetic texts to represent some of the voices present related to the issue. "Black Lives Matter" They marched down the street, Protesting so inequality does not repeat. They marched for those who lost their lives, So no more deaths are put in archives. Little punishment the police received, All because of white supremacy? All their signs read "Black Lives Matter." For George Floyd, and everyone else who had died . They chanted: "Black Lives Matter!" "Black Lives Matter!" -Norah Small This is a three-poem set about global warming written from the eyes of different things affected by it. "The City" "The Ocean" "The Polar Bear" Though the ocean waves by, The blue waters arise, I stare into the red sun’s glare. The earth is quite dry, Reflecting the skies, (Why was there heat in the air?) And it's littered with plastic and trash. But sadly, not for long. While searching for something to eat. There’s no trees in sight, For underneath, Standing on this ice, No birds a flight, There’s no colorful reef; Might be for only the night, ‘Cause the air was gone in a flash. And the fish are all dead and gone. Because its melting away at my feet. -Keolani Morrow
