Norfolk Junior High School 2021-2022 Seventh Grade Information We are excited that you and your student will be a part of the 2021-2022 Norfolk Junior High 7th Grade Class. This presentation will provide you with important information that will help you prepare for the next school year.

The principal secretary is Mrs. Alicia Busch, the attendance and discipline secretary is Ms. Fuentes, the guidance secretary is Mrs. Lanman, and the Chromebook Technology Specialist is Ms. Peterson.
Additional Office Staff 2021-2022 School Resource Officer Officer Brent Tietz Norfolk Junior High School is the home office of School Resource Officer Brent Tietz. Officer Tietz serves the Junior High, Middle School, and the Elementary Schools
Course Descriptions NJHS Website ● Click on Counseling Tab (on left) ○ Registration Information ○ Course Descriptions Our next section of the presentation will be on 7th grade courses. Detailed course descriptions can be found on the NJHS Website.
Three Teams at NJHS 7th Grade Teams: ● English Teacher ● Math Teacher ● Science Teacher ● Social Studies Teacher ● Special Education Teacher Each grade level at the Junior High has three teams that consist of an English teacher, a Math teacher, a Science Teacher, a Social Studies teacher, and a Special Education teacher. These team allow for the opportunity to really get to know the students and families. Students will have the opportunity to have classes with other teams during their elective classes.
REQUIRED CLASSES All 7th graders take: English Mrs. Schnoor, Miss Lutjens, Mrs. Padilla All 7th grader will take an English class. Our 7th grade English teachers are Mrs. Schnoor, Miss Lutjens, and Mrs. Padilla.
REQUIRED CLASSES All 7th graders take: Math Mr. Spanel, Miss Gaines, Mrs. Borgelt All 7th graders will take a math class which will be either Math 7 or Pre-Algebra. Math class recommendations will be made by the 6th grade math teachers. Our 7th grade math teachers are Mr. Spanel, Miss Gaines, and Mrs. Borgelt.
REQUIRED CLASSES All 7th graders take: Science Mr. Guenther, Ms. Wisch, Mrs. Hagedorn All students will take a 7th grade Science class. Our 7th grade Science teachers are Mr. Guenther, Ms. Wisch, and Mrs. Hagedorn.
REQUIRED CLASSES All 7th graders take: Social Studies Mr. Mrsny, Mr. Silhacek, and Mrs. Boche All 7th grade students will take a Social Studies class. Our Social Studies teachers are Mr. Mrsny, Mr. Silhacek, and Mrs. Boche.
REQUIRED CLASSES All 7th graders take: PE/Health Mr. Kraemer and Mrs. Lenton All 7th grade students will take a year long PE / Health class. Our PE/Health teachers are Mr. Kraemer and Mrs. Lenton.
Additional 7th grade elective classes include: THE WHEEL…………….. ● Industrial Tech ● Art ● STEM ● SOAR *Each class meets for approximately 9 weeks. In addition to the core and PE classes, students will take an exploratory wheel of four quarter classes. These classes are Industrial Technology, Art, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), and SOAR (Strong, Organized, Active, and Respected: civic involvement / connectedness).
Additional 7th grade elective classes include: ● Life Management ● Exploring Technology *Semester classes Additionally, 7th grade students will take a semester of Life Management and Exploring Technology.
Music Students ● Band and Orchestra meet during the same period. ● Can take one or combination of the two (alternate days) ● Chorus meets during a different class period. ● Music classes replace a combination of The Wheel Exploratory classes, Life Manangement, and/or Exploring Technology The only reason students may not be in the elective classes mentioned above is if they choose to be in music classes. Music classes are optional and include band, orchestra, and/or choir. To be in band or orchestra a student must already play an instrument. If there are any exceptions...students would need to talk to the music teacher to get permission to join.
Jazz Band ● Jazz Band students must also be in band. ● Students who want jazz band will sign up with Mrs. Erickson at the MS. ● Jazz Band meets during the school day opposite lunch. (½ period Jazz Band, ½ period lunch) Band students also have the option to join Jazz Band. Jazz Band meets for ½ of a period...opposite of lunch time.
MUSIC SIGN-UP ● Sign-up sheet will go home with students and will be returned to the MS homeroom teacher. ● NJHS offers choir, band, and /or orchestra ● Music courses are optional and not required Music Class sign-ups sheets will be passed out this week through your homeroom teacher. Please indicate on the sheet whether or not your student will be participating in music classes. These forms are due back on April 9th.
Norfolk Junior High School IMPORTANT INFORMATION! This next section of the presentation deals with important information regarding physical and immunization requirements. It will also discuss some of the activities that will be available to 7th graders.
State Requirements Before picking up your schedule in August, ALL 7th grade students must: ● Have a Physical exam by a doctor (after May 1st if playing sports) ● Have a Tdap shot...Must provide proof of immunization at schedule pick-up. ● Physical exam form: ■ Get one at doctor’s office ■ Print from our NJHS website under “nurse’s corner”
ATHLETICS ● Football ● Cross Country ● Volleyball ● Basketball ● Wrestling ● Track As previously mentioned, all 7th grade students must have a physical before picking up their schedule. If they plan on playing competitive or intramural sports, that physical must occur after May 1st and before schedule pick up. Activities at the junior high include football, cross country, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, and track.
ACTIVITIES FEE for Music and Sports: ● $50 if in an activity/sport (can be waived if qualify for free/reduced lunch) At the junior high level, there is a $50 activity fee for participating in music and sports. It is a waivable fee if you qualify for free / reduced lunch. There will be paperwork available at schedule pickup if needed.
● Student Council ● Jazz Band ● Show Choir ● Competitive Speech and/or Debate ● Quiz Bowl ● Aftershock Clubs ● TeamMates ● JOI Other activities available at the Junior High include Student Council, Jazz Band, Show Choir, Competitive Speech and / or Debate, Quiz Bowl, Aftershock clubs, Teammates, and JOI.
Devices / Digital Citizenship ● Chromebooks: School owned ● Technology Fee: $35 ● Students will be able to take them home... ● Responsibility ● Filters ● Parents: “screen time” Each student will have the opportunity to have a chromebook checked out to them at the beginning of the school year. There is a $35 technology fee. This fee is waivable if you qualify for free/reduced lunch. It is a school owned chromebook that students will be able to take home to complete their school work. It will be monitored via the school district’s filter. It is the responsibility of the student to take care of the chromebook. There will be fines to repair the chromebook if it is damaged or broken. While the school does have access to the chromebook, we strongly encourage parents/guardians to monitor their students screen time to make sure they are making safe choices.
Schedule Pickup, Fees, & Pictures ● Schedules can be picked up on specified dates in August ● Remember...students must provide proof of physical & immunization ● Required fees will be paid ● Additional paperwork will be available. ● Fall sports information & sign-up ● Smile for the camera! School pics! In August, students will be invited to pick up their schedule and other important information. Remember, in order to pick up their schedule, students must provide proof of their physical and immunization. Required fees will also be paid at that time. Students will also have their fall picture and ID picture taken at that time...so make sure you wear school appropriate clothing.
Schedule Pickup Continued ● Find your classrooms ● Find your locker and practice opening it ● Practice walking through your schedule within the passing time In addition to picking up schedules, students will be able to find their classroom, their lockers, and practice walking through their schedules to help them feel comfortable before the first day of school.
