1. LEAVING CERT EXAMS EXAM PAPERS NOTE: No change in the length of exams. However, 2 major adjustments have been made to exam papers 1. To reduce the load on students, adjustments have been made in the exam papers. In the majority of cases these adjustments will involve reducing the number of questions that students will be required to answer. The duration will remain the same, thus providing students with additional time to read the paper and answer the required number of questions.
1. LEAVING CERT EXAMS EXAM PAPERS 2. Additional choice on the paper This varies subject by subject. See a guide on each subject here: https://www.education.ie/en/Schools- Colleges/Information/Curriculum-and- Syllabus/assessment-arrangements-junior-cycle-and- leaving-certificate-examinations-2021.pdf Go to P.3 of the document, click on the relevant subject and look at the 2021 adjustments column on the right
1. LEAVING CERT EXAMS ORALS • Students who wish to take the examinations must participate in orals • For those who choose the option of the SEC Accredited Grade, there is no oral exam. However, oral and aural proficiency will be part of the teachers’ professional judgement for the Accredited Grade as per exam weighting. • The orals will be carried out in-school • Week of March 29th – Irish * During the Easter holidays • Week of April 6th – French* During the Easter holidays • Conducted by teachers. • Teachers will record and then the school sends it to the SEC • Orals are corrected by SEC, not by the teacher
1. LEAVING CERT EXAMS COURSEWORK/ PRACTICALS • At the moment, all students will continue with coursework/practical work • This coursework will be submitted to the SEC if you opt to sit the exams • SEC will issue new dates for completion as soon as possible • Subject-by-subject guide on all subjects with practical/coursework components will be issued to schools shortly • MUSIC - Performance component of the examination will be arranged to ensure adherence with public health requirements but is hoped to take place during Easter
2. SEC ACCREDITED GRADE What is an SEC Accredited Grade? • A grade that can be provided to a student in each subject following the combination by the SEC of a school estimated percentage mark for a student’s expected performance in an examination and national data available in relation to the performance of students in examinations over a period of time. • Accredited Grades therefore take cognisance of performance in all aspects of an examination including, where relevant, oral, practical and coursework components and tasks.
2. SEC ACCREDITED GRADE What is an SEC Accredited Grade? An SEC Accredited Grade results from combining data as follows: • A school estimation of a percentage mark to be awarded to a student in respect of her/his expected performance in an examination in that particular subject. • Data available from the state examinations – this includes, but is not necessarily limited to, national data on past Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate/Cycle examination performance (pre-2020) of students in each subject. The combination of these data sets through a process of national standardisation will determine the grade to be awarded to each student in each subject, thereby resulting in an SEC Accredited Grade being awarded.
2. SEC ACCREDITED GRADE • All students will be assigned an estimated percentage mark by their teacher, in each subject • Subject alignment between subject departments • Oversight by school management • Submission of data to the SEC • SEC standardization • Accredited Grade allocated • Students must sign up to receive an accredited grade via an SEC online portal
2. SEC ACCREDITED GRADE SEC CANDIDATE PORTAL • Students will be required to register on the SEC’s Candidate Portal • Students must confirm their subject and level entry details • Students must opt for the examinations and/or to receive SEC Accredited Grades. • Portal is expected to open in the week of 8th March to allow students to make their choices. • Students will have approximately one week in which to do this. • The portal will re-open in late April/early May to enable candidates to review their choices.
2. SEC ACCREDITED GRADE What will teachers be using to estimate a percentage mark? • Professional judgement • Evidence over two years – performance in all assessed work completed in school, completion of work assigned, etc • Please see P.13 of https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/81e76-a-guide- to-state-examinations-and-accredited-grades-for- leaving-certificate-2021/ May 28th last day of term for all students
