École Seven Oaks Middle School 2021-2022 Handbook Hawks Pride/Fierté des Hawks Our Mission Statement : “At ÉSOMS we are a community of learners, valuing and supporting resiliency by providing opportunity to build mastery, independence, generosity and belonging. Together we strive to meet the academic and social needs of all students as they develop a greater sense of self.” École Seven Oaks Middle School is a Grade 6 - 8 French Immersion school. We are a school that endeavors to have all our students fully engaged in their education. Thriving music, athletic and artistic programming compliments our academic excellence at ÉSOMS. - We have a student population of approximately 400 students and 55 staff. - Our school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. - Lunch is from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m., students eat in their own classroom. - Some clubs, committees and most teams meet during lunch, before and after school. - Our Music Program includes concert bands, jazz bands, fiddling, choirs, vocal jazz and fiddling program. Students also participate in the school's annual spring musical production. - More than two thirds of our students are involved in extra-curricular Athletics at ÉSOMS. Students compete within the school, across the Division and throughout the city in the areas of Volleyball, Basketball, Cross Country, Track and Field, Badminton and Softball
WELCOME TO PARENT CONNECT Schools in Seven Oaks School Division, including École Seven Oaks Middle School, use a program called “Parent Connect”. This is a password protected website that allows you access to a variety of your child’s school information. Instructions on how to log into Parent Connect are located within the school website. Once you have logged on to the Parent Connect program, there is a variety of information that you will find: - To view your child’s attendance – Click on the ‘Attendance’ tab - To view your child’s report cards – Click on the ‘Folder’ tab - To edit your phone number and basic info – Click on the ’Basic’ tab - To change your password – Click on the ’Password’ tab and follow instructions - To book parent-teacher interview appointments – Click on the ’Interview’ tab (only viewable once parent teacher conference times are open to booking) - To submit your child’s permission forms electronically – Click on the ‘Forms’ tab and select the appropriate answer from the drop down If you have any questions or if you are having difficulty logging into Parent Connect, please contact the school.
ATTENDANCE If your child will not be at school or will be late, please contact our office at 204-586-0327 or email your classroom teacher. The office is open for phone calls between 7:45 am and 3:30 pm. If your child is absent and we have not been notified, you will be contacted to ensure your child is safe. BREAKFAST PROGRAM ÉSOMS offers breakfast every morning from 8:00 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. We offer a simple and nutritious menu, available free of charge from the canteen. LUNCH HOUR (11:15-12:15) École Seven Oaks Middle School provides lunchtime supervision for students who stay at school for lunch. Our lunch schedule allows children time to eat together in their own classrooms with their classmates and then participate in a variety of activities afterward. There are several children and staff at ÉSOMS who have life threatening allergies to nuts and fish. Our goal is to provide a safe classroom and school for all students. This also applies to the food which is brought into the school. Please assist us in ensuring that your child’s lunches and snacks are nut free and fish free.
Music Programs at ÉSOMS Music making at ESOMS is all about community. Students are encouraged to try out many musical opportunities to enrich their learning. BAND - There are three grade-level concert bands (grade 6, grade 7, grade 8) which students can participate in. These classes occur during the school day during scheduled classes. JAZZ BAND - There are 3 grade-level jazz bands practicing and performing together this year. These classes can take place over the lunch hour.
CHOIR - Choirs rehearse throughout the year at lunch. VOCAL JAZZ – Vocal Jazz ensembles practice and perform throughout the school year. FIDDLE - There are a variety of opportunities for students to learn and enjoy fiddle music. All grade 6 classes get fiddle instruction. EXPLORATORY Students who do not take band will take Exploratory. Students in Exploratory will explore project-based learning models that vary from year-to-year.
T.A.S. - Technology Arts and Sports École Seven Oaks Middle School is pleased to offer many offerings to our students in Technology, Arts and Sports classes (TAS). TAS is an experiential class that provides students with new learning opportunities that they many not otherwise experience. Students do not choose their TAS class, with the exception of Hockey. TAS is scheduled for a full morning once per cycle, and falls into three terms (Fall, Winter, Spring). Each term students are assigned a new TAS class. Bussing is provided at no-cost for all students who attend classes that are not located in ÉSOMS. Off-site locations include École Leila North School, Garden City Community Centre and Seven Oaks Arena.
FRENCH IMMERSION ÉSOMS is a dual track school, which means that both the English and French Immersion programs co-exist in the same building. In dual track schools, the curriculum is similar to and has the same general outcomes as the English program. CORE CURRICULUM Includes the basic subject areas of Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, French (for English students only), Français (for Immersion students only), Phys. Ed. These are based upon Manitoba Education curriculum. INTRAMURALS Some athletic activities or events are held at lunch hour with the primary purpose of encouraging all students to participate regardless of athletic ability. INTERSCHOLASTICS (School Teams) ÉSOMS offers many athletic activities which allow students to compete with students of other schools in our division as well as other school divisions. These include basketball, volleyball, badminton, and track & field.
LIBRARY Our library is an active partner in the learning process. This is also a space that is open to students at lunch time.
