VIII. Evaluation Students will receive a Satisfactory (S) grade in the course by completing the following assignments: ● Diagnostic Skills exam ● 12 Weekly exams (containing a minimum of 30 questions and passing by 75% or above) ● Mock INBDE exam Students will receive an Unsatisfactory (U) grade in the course for the following: ● Incomplete Diagnostic Skills exam ● Fewer than 12 weekly exams and scores below 75% ● Incomplete Mock NBDE Part 2 exam The Office of Academic Affairs will be tracking student progress using a Kaplan database. The Course Director will contact and meet with any student that is not making progress in their examination scores at 75% or above. University of Florida College of Dentistry Course Debriefing DEN 6301C Fundamentals of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology January 8, 2021 Present: Dr. Gohel, L. Kanter, A. Shaikh, D. Durrett, H. Lenga, S. Veerjee, E. Carroll. C. Kocan, G. Childs, C. Ryan Overall: 16 students completed course evaluations. Mean course evaluation scores on all items ranged from 4.75-4.88 on a 5 point scale. Purpose: New Course Director, Dr. Anita Gohel. Additionally, this course was taught in a 3 week condensed cycle with the General Pathology (on a 6 week condensed cycle) course. Learning Environment Adjectives in the students' course comments included; Great professor, caring, highly enthusiastic, knowledgeable, “she made the material easy to understand!”, “drew from her personal experiences in radiology, making it relevant to our careers”, always willing to explain, passionate and knowledgeable. She valued and focused on the “important” material. ● Students present strongly agreed these statements reflected the learning environment in the course. Course Content ● Lectures were well organized with a good balance of content and radiographic images. There were multiple examples and slides of structures at macro and micro levels with clinical relevance. ● Students highly complimented Dr. Kashtwari’s lecture contributions in the course. ● Dr. Gohel offered extra sessions to guide students through difficult concepts (e.g. radiographic angulation) with the opportunity to pose questions. ● One student reported that wrote more notes than any other course due to the course pacing and to assist with her learning. Teaching Methods ● Polleverywhere - students are frustrated by pop questions and then searching for their phones. As a best practice faculty who use polling should announce its use at the start of class and include the QR scanner code in the first slide so students are prepared when the questions are presented. Dr. Gohel did include this and will be more intentional in preparing the students for polling. ● Dr. Gohel inquired about the activity with the hand-held devices. Students reported this did not work well in Zoom and that most group projects goals are divided up to get the task done. Students recognized equipment as an important part of practice and asked Dr. Gohel to consider pros/cons discussion and/or in break out sessions. Labs ● The labs were not offered during “stay at home orders”. They will be integrated in the DEN7805L radiology rotation. Evaluation ● Students felt the evaluations focused on the material taught. Summary of Course Recommendations ● Students reported that many previous lectures included radiographs which they drew little from as they did not have the foundation knowledge to interpret. Consider moving the course earlier and/or 1
incorporating additional concepts of radiographic normal anatomy in Gross Anatomy, Dental Anatomy and Occlusion, Operative and Cariology. ● This course could be offered in a half-semester time frame. Summary of Administrative Recommendations ● Align evaluations to open close to the course ending when it does not span the entire semester. Students are focusing on studying on final exams and fatigued at the end of the semester. Students suggested using every class opportunity in-person or online to pause and have students take a few minutes to complete GatorEvals. ● General Pathology (DEN6350) is the most challenging course in semester 3 and should extend over the entire semester. Students will always prioritize this course study over other occurring. 2
