HOW TO MAKE YOUR STUDIES SUCCESSFUL Good to know… German universities are Many German students go public, not private owned! abroad, too! All German students speak Nearly all exams take place at English – just ask them! the end of term! 12.03.2018 International Office 15
DO‘s • Lectures/classes start on time. Be there at least 5 minutes earlier! • Take notes! What is written on the blackboard is usually relevant for the examinations. • Participate actively in the class (answer lecturers‘ questions, participate in groupwork, etc.). • Raise your hand if you want to speak during the course. Don‘t just shout into the classroom. • Go to the lecturer after the class is over, if you did not understand something or could not follow and ask him. • Make sure your learning agreement is up to date! 12.03.2018 International Office 16
DONT‘s • Don‘t give up too early: It always takes some time until all works out smoothly – ask your fellow students, lecturers, faranto fellows, international office… • Don‘t hang out only with your own folks: Try to make new friends among the Germans and other international students right from the beginning… • Don‘t postpone all study work until end of January: Clever students continuously work on the exercises handed out by the lecturers… • Don‘t assume it all works in the same way as at your home university: Teaching and learning cultures can be very different – ask the German students about how they learn, what kind of exam questions to expect, etc.… 12.03.2018 International Office 17
