THE NOVEMBER MESSENGER 2021 NO GREATER PEACE We live in times of turmoil. It is not necessary to recount all the issues we face today or point out everything in today’s culture that is in conflict with the Word of God. The world rages around us; our culture is swiftly changing – and not always for the better; temptations to sin abound, and we often fall into sin and fail to “fear, love and trust in God above all things.” What can we do? Or better, to whom can we turn? The answer is Je- sus and the peace He gives to our hearts which then flows into our lives. Jesus teaches us about a peace that is greater than all. He tells us: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14; 27). Jesus not only tells us about His peace; He gives us His peace. It is peace between us and God, which Jesus earned for us by His death and resurrection. Jesus’ peace means forgiveness for our sins, newness of life each day and hearts that overflow with joy and peace. Finally, when our earthly journey of life is complete, we rest in peace and rise in glory. We feel helpless against everything that happens in this world that so often conflicts with the Word of God and what we believe. However, when we come into the sanctuary of St. Paul’s, we have stepped away from this world to hear the Word of God and receive His Holy Sacrament. When all have received the body and blood of our Lord, the pastor announces: “depart in peace.” The Lord’s peace flows into our hearts and sustains us in the days ahead. The words of Jesus that tell us to “let not our hearts be troubled neither let them be afraid,” are fulfilled, be- cause Jesus gives us His peace. And off we go, with no greater peace. Rev. Richard Radtke, Pastor Emeritus

The conse- crated wafer is the true body of Christ and must be cared for at all times. In fact, there is a story about Luther spilling the wine, after it had been consecrated, and getting down on the ground and licking it up like a dog with water streaming down his face. The Lord’s Supper must be shown great respect and must be han- dled at all times with the utmost reverence be- cause it is the body of Christ.
