ㅊㅊ NEWSLETT ER Yantai Huasheng International School February 17, 2022 SCHOOL-WIDE NEWS LOST AND FOUND CORNER NEW LOOK Our Lost and Found is located in the corner by the door 14 in the ECC Fish Tank area. Lost items are classified according to categories such as uniform jackets, coats, hats, and student work. Please encourage your child to check the Lost and Found for any lost items. We would also like to suggest that parents label their child(ren)’s items with their name. ELEMENTARY NEWS WINTER MAP GROWTH TEST REPORT FOR GRADE K-5 Parents of students from Kindergarten through G5 can access their child’s MAP report through PowerSchool. Once you log into PowerSchool, click the “Applications” icon in the top right corner and then click “DocBox” on the list. Parents can refer to the MAP Data Parent Guide (LINK) on how to read the report. These MAP Growth tests not only determine the student’s instructional level but also measure their academic growth throughout the school year (and from year to year) in various subjects. Please note that MAP Growth scores are just one data point that teachers use to determine how a student is performing. Please discuss any questions that you have about your child’s performance with your child’s teacher.
SWIMMING CLUB AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITY FOR G3-5 The swimming club after-school activity for upper elementary students begins on Thursday, February 24 and runs until June 2 (15 weeks). The club meets from 3:20 to 4:45 pm on Thursdays. If you are interested in registering your child for swimming club, please complete this online form by February 20 and click HERE for more information about the coach, requirements, and items that they need to bring. There will be a parent briefing at 9:30 am at the swimming pool front desk on Monday, February 21. Parents can enter the school gym through the entrance by the west gate of the campus on Aihua Road. If you would like to come, please indicate that in the above survey. ELEMENTARY SCIENCE FAIR Elementary Science Fair is taking place on Friday, February 25 from 12:40 to 3:20 pm. Parents are invited to come and support their child(ren). A detailed schedule of the fair will be shared in next week’s newsletter. ECC LUNCH FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM If you are the parent of an ECC student, please complete the lunch food survey link (LINK) to indicate if your child is bringing food from home or having school lunch. This would be helpful for the cafeteria team and the teachers to have an understanding of your child’s daily lunch plan. The survey closes at midnight on February 20. Students will be served western lunch if there's no food order placed for the day. ECC/LOWER ELEMENTARY SNACK YHIS offers snacks to ECC twice a day; in the morning and in the afternoon, and to lower elementary students once a day in the morning. Each snack time is 6 RMB, and it is optional. If you would like to use the service, please submit an order (ECC and G1-2) by midnight on February 20. SECONDARY NEWS NEW PROGRAM TO ENCOURAGE COMMUNITY LANGUAGE Given the number of different native languages spoken by students and staff at YHIS, the school has selected English as the common language to speak at all times during school hours. English was chosen since this is the language used for instruction at YHIS. One benefit of the community language policy (CLP) is that it will improve students’ English language skills, which will result in better grades. A second motivation for the CLP is the Golden Rule: treat others as you would like to be treated. It is easy for individuals to be isolated if those around them are speaking a language they don't speak. The best way to care for those around you is to always speak in the common language (English) while on the campus or on the bus, since this is what you would want others to do for you. Last but not least, it is important for staff to monitor what a student says to others for safety reasons, which is possible only if everyone speaks the community language. We encourage parents to remind students about the importance of the CLP for the three reasons stated above.
As part of the efforts to encourage the CLP, YHIS is implementing a new program. Students have been given 10 circle stickers which are attached on the back of their ID card. If a student is caught breaking the CLP, a sticker will be removed from their ID card. Advisory teachers will check how many stickers each student has left at the end of each week. For this reason, all secondary students will be required to wear their ID card as part of their school uniform. For each missing sticker the student must write a paragraph about why it is important to speak the community language. Those who have three or more offenses will be subject to English language detention after school on the following Monday. Mr. Rick McCarthy, the Student Conduct Coordinator, will run the detention, during which they will practice a speech. If they repeat this offense, they will keep practicing the same speech each and every week. Students who acquire three or more offenses each week on a consistent basis will be subject to further disciplinary measures. This program also applies while students are on the bus. In order to ease the students into this new program, we are removing stickers with no consequences this week. There will be a reward for the advisory that is most successful at using only the community language. Next week, we will implement the paragraph punishment, and starting the following week of February 28, all parts of the program will be implemented. SICHUAN SCIENCE FAIR Five high school students will be participating in the Regeneron Sichuan Science Fair on Friday and Saturday, February 18 and 19. The fair will be held virtually, and the students will interact with the judges at different times throughout these two days. 2ND YHIS/YIA ANNUAL CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST The second annual YHIS/YIA Creative Writing Contest is taking place on Saturday, February 26, 2022 from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm. Creative Writing is important because it gives students an opportunity to communicate the “human experience.” Students can reflect on the world around them—the needs, wants, evils, and good in humanity—and express those reflections creatively. The brain is similar to the body. When body-builders exercise, they cannot only do pushups. They must also run, lift weights, and engage all of their muscles. Similarly, healthy writers cannot only engage in academic writing. They must also engage in creative writing to become effective communicators. Because of these reasons, this year’s writing competition will focus on poetry. Students will learn how to find musicality, rhythm, and rhyme in the English language. They will have the opportunity to explore structure, style, and perspective. They will practice how to condense language into its most potent and vibrant form. They will do all this while also presenting a central idea. Poetry is art communicated through writing. Interested secondary students can register by completing an online form (LINK) by Friday, February 25. Please refer to the detailed schedule of the contest below. Time 8:30-9:00 am Registration 9:00-10:00 am Workshop 10:00-12:00 pm Poetry Writing
MIDDLE SCHOOL GAME/MOVIE NIGHT The Student Council is planning a middle school game/movie night on Friday, February 25 from 3:30 – 7:00 pm. The first portion of the event will be outdoor games run by the Student Council, and then the students will come in for dinner and a movie (Raya and the Last Dragon) and board games. Middle school students will not attend after-school activities and are allowed to wear “winter themed” (blue and white) clothes to school on this day. iSC HIGH SCHOOL VEX ROBOTICS COMPETITION The iSC High School Vex Robotics Competition that was originally scheduled for February 25-26 has been rescheduled for Monday, March 7. The competition will be held virtually; students in HS Robotics club will participate from the YHIS campus. They will showcase their “Robot-making Skills (Practical Mechanics), Controlling, and Programming Skills”. A parent letter with details will be sent home with the participating students on Friday, February 25. If you have further questions, please contact Mr. Eugene Kim at eugene.kim@yhischina.com. STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS FEBRUARY YHIS SPIRIT DAY The February YHIS Spirit Day theme is taking place on Wednesday, February 23. Dress like your favorite character! Don’t tell your classmates about the character you will be. Maybe you will pass by a friend unrecognized. Students who choose not to participate are to wear their school uniform. We look forward to a fun Character Day!
