Message from the Chair So another year has passed! For us fear of contamination has become real. In some respects it has been interesting to see how our neighbours and family react. More interesting --to see how each of us copes with the strange new world in which we nd ourselves. Maybe we have each learned something about ourselves and our capacity to adapt. The Senior Centre has been more or less closed for most of the year. We are grateful to our volunteers who persisted in doing the income tax returns for nearly one hundred members. Luckily we added a new volunteer and their way was smoothed by Donna Smith who was approved by Canada Revenue to have access to some tax records. The driving programme has also survived though in the last few months we have had only about a third of our usual requests apparently because medical services have reorganized sta to cope with the emergencies created by the pandemic. In hope of better times (and Dr. Bonnie Henry willing) we are thinking of reopening at the end of May to celebrate my and Donna's birthdays. and yes, I (but not Donna) will be too old for this kind of thing. We need volunteers--any are very likely younger than I am. Jean Elder. Which letter is silent in the word "Scent," the S or the C? ff fi
Income Tax for Seniors Due to Covid restrictions the Seniors' Centre has been closed except for meetings held by the Caregivers' Group, AA, and AlAnon, and a limited Medical Driving Program. From mid March through to mid May we did open for our tax program, just 2 days a week from 10-12. This program was available for members with an income under $35,000. Donna Smith manned the front desk, helped members complete the intake form, got those to our tax preparers and informed people when their tax receipts were ready to pick up. During the first six weeks of this program, our volunteers completed and filed 94 sets of taxes. We'd like to thank the volunteers who worked on all of these taxes. Jenny Coghlan, and John McPherson were joined, this year, by Jean Elwell. During the busiest part of the intake process, Norbert Schlenker also offered us help. We are truly lucky to have such generous people who are willing to make this program work. We are urging those people who have not picked up their completed taxes to do so in June. The office will be open from 10-12, Monday through Friday. Any taxes not picked up will be shredded in July. Question: How many retirees does it take to change a light bulb? Answer Only one, but it might take all day. Question: Among retirees, what is considered formal attire? Answer: Tied shoes.
