General Tips for University Applicants Important Dates to Follow September 20th Post-Secondary Planning & Scholarship Info Presentation at NHS (period 1) 20th University Info. Presentation at NHS (period 2) 22th-24th Ontario Universities’ Fair- Metro Convention Centre (10am-5pm) October 1st Study and Go Abroad Fair- Metro Convention Centre (1pm-5pm) 12th College Information Presentation at NHS (period 4) 13th Apprenticeship Information Presentation at NHS (period 3) 28th- 29th Macleans Student Life Expo - Metro Convention Centre (10am-5pm) 24th Ontario College Information Fair – Enercare Centre – Exhibition Place 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm 25th Ontario College Information Fair – Enercare Centre – Exhibition Place 9:00 am to 2:00 pm November 9th OUAC receives all electronic student data files from Ontario secondary schools. *if you are not planning on applying to a university this year contact guidance to remove yourself from this list* OUAC will be sending each student a PIN to access OUAC. Guidance will contact you as soon as they are ready for pick-up 9th Post Secondary Fair – Newmarket High School 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm 20th University/College Application Presentation- NHS p. 2 27th Full Disclosure of semester 1 grades January 17th Deadline for students to apply to OUAC (all final grades from grade 11 and 12 courses and current-year courses will be collected) February 6th Recommended last day for students to submit all information to the OUAC to be eligible for early acceptance incl. university and program changes and additional choices. 15th OUAC to receive all final 1st semester grades. April 26th 2nd semester mid-term grades sent to OUAC May 3rdh Full Disclosure for semester 2 grades 29th Last day for students to receive a response from an Ontario university (responses will be one of: 1. an offer of admission, 2. a refusal, or 3. a deferral pending receipt of specific additional information) June 1st The earliest date by which Ontario universities require a response to an offer and a financial commitment of any kind. July Final grades sent to OUAC 1
How Do I Prepare to Apply to a University Program?! Please take the time to ensure you are prepared to apply to university. Below is a checklist of items to consider Earn your Ontario Secondary School Diploma by June 2018 o Successfully complete (or be registered in) 18 compulsory credits o Successfully complete (or be registered in) 12 elective credits o Successfully complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement o Pass the literacy test or complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course Earn a minimum of six grade 12 University (U) and/or University/College (M) courses by June 2018 o English (ENG4U1) is one of the six grade 12 courses o Note: Some universities have restrictions on the number of “M” courses that they will include in the admissions average! Cost of applications on OUAC is $150 for 3 choices (programs and/or university). Each additional choice costs $50. Any time, beyond the initial 3, that you add an additional choice there is a $50 fee, unless you withdraw a choice and then add another choice at the same institution. Keep track of the important dates outlined in this information package Update your email address on Career Cruising so that Guidance services can contact you. Review your IPP (Career Cruising) and think about your skills and interests. Are you especially interested in: o Mathematics o Fine Arts (visual arts, music, theatre) o General Arts (sociology, humanities, languages, philosophy, political science etc) o Business o Sciences o Physical Education o Education Then look on electronicinfo.ca at “Find a Program” Eg. General Arts- Criminology Electronicinfo.ca tells you there are 47 programs in that field. Narrow down your choices based on where the program is offered, required courses and cut-off averages. Then go to the university website to verify information. Choosing a university can be a lengthy process. When choosing where you want to go consider the following: How Do I Choose a University?! o Academic programs o Location of university- close to home or far away, small town/big city o Size of university o Costs to commute home for holidays/breaks o Career preparation o Graduate programs o Co-op opportunities o Available scholarships o How you will commute if you live at home o Residence costs and residence facilities o Sports and recreation complexes o Campus life o Student services (extra help, accessibility, IEP support, mental wellness etc) VISIT THE CAMPUSES – open houses occur throughout the year (see einfo for dates) 3
