How to Distinguish Between Christmas Greenery Holly – classic green plant with red berries seen during the holidays Pine – n eedles are like spruce tree needles, but the branches of a pine tree are bent upward, and trees have fewer branches Spruce – needles are attached individually to the branches Fir – C oncolor Fir, Noble Fir, Canaan Fir, Grand Fir, Fraser Fir, Douglas Fir and Balsam Fir – each having different qualities Juniper – short, sticky, green, or silver blue foliage with small blue berries Christmas Cactus The Christmas Cactus, a winter-flowering plant makes a great addition to nearly any indoor holiday decorations. These plants are not only easy to care for but generates easily too. The Christmas cactus is easily propagated by: 1. cutting a short Y-shaped segment from the stem tips 2. planting the piece in soil 3. wet lightly but evenly 4. p lace the cutting in a well-lit area, staying away from any direct sunlight How to Care for Christmas Cactus The Christmas cactus grows well under average home conditions with moderate care. The Christmas cactus will adapt to low light conditions but will produce more blooms if exposed to brighter light Remember – too much direct sunlight will cause the leaves to burn. Keeping the soil moist is important as well. The plant requires frequent and thorough watering, during its active growth in spring and summer. You can allow the moisture levels to drop and dry out some between watering intervals, but never completely. The cactus does not like to have wet feet (sit in water), as this will lead to root and stem rot. Every other week or so you can apply a mild fertilizer solution.
