Age Concern Auckland News December 2020 Our Latest Annual Report We recently held the first AGM for the amalgamated Age Concern Auckland. It has been a landmark year in the history of Age Concern across Auckland. Age Concern Auckland was established in 1949 as a single organisation supporting the needs of older people across the city. While in subsequent years, this was split into smaller units, we came full circle in 2019 and reformed into a single Age Concern for all older Aucklanders. You can read our latest Annual Report here. Creating Crucial Social Connections Each week 554 Age Concern volunteers across Auckland visit an older person, spending time with them to help alleviate their loneliness and isolation. We have been delivering this service for almost 30 years and during that time around 15,000 volunteers have made this special connection. Our thanks to you all. This is one of our clients Jenny at Westhaven Marina. Jenny used to walk along there often when she was younger but hadn’t seen the new broad walk. Her volunteer Brigid took Jenny for a walk there. The boat in the photo, which is for sale, caught Jenny’s eye, unfortunately the $1.5m price tag is a little too steep! TVNZ recently ran a story on one of our AVS clients, 90 year old Phyllis Reid. Phyllis talked about how difficult this year had been, especially during lockdown, and how the help and support she is receiving from our Visiting Service is helping to fill the missing pieces of her life. Asian Services Our specialised Asian Services team working in partnership with A Better Chance Charitable Trust have introduced some new activities. One of these involves, inviting older Chinese people living alone to come to a dumpling making class. While they are making dumplings, we deliver talks on Positive Ageing – during the session in the photo we were discussing the importance of staying active as you age. We are also delivering weekly activities through Rest Homes. The games and activities are designed to encourage the residents to interact with each other and to stimulate their cognitive thinking. Mandy facilitates the activities and the residents look forward to her visits. Community Strength and Balance Earlier this year our Health Promotion team delivered a four week ‘Falls Prevention’ workshop to a senior’s group in Kawakawa Bay. When the course finished, they were still keen to continue to exercise and improve their strength and balance. So Beth, the coordinator of our Community Strength & Balance Programme, worked with the group to establish a weekly ‘Steady As You Go (SayGo) Group’. The group has been a huge success and participants make a gold coin donation each week to cover the cost of hall hire, morning tea etc. With any surplus funds being donated to Age Concern Auckland to thank us for our support. The first donation of $250 has been greatly appreciated. Click here to find out more about the courses offered through our Community Strength and Balance Programme Thanks for your Wonderful Support Our heartfelt thanks to the following funders who have provided us with grants in the past three months, allowing us to continue to be there for those older people in the community needing our support: Albert-Eden Local Board; Anstiss-Garland Charitable Trust; Devonport-Takapuna Local Board; Estate of Ernest Hyam Davis; Foundation North; Four Winds Foundation; Henderson- Massey Local Board; JM Thompson Charitable Trust; Lottery Community Auckland; Kaipataki Local Board; Margaret Olive Russell Charitable Trust; Masfen Foundation; Ted & Mollie Carr Endowment Fund and The Trusts Community Foundation.
