CHALLENGE DETAILS AND OVERVIEW - THE GREAT RUGBY CYCLE 2020 - Doddie5 Ride
The Inaugural Great Rugby Cycle 2019 covered 1133 miles in March 2019 from John O’Groats to Land’s End in support of
the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
As a warm-up to the 2020 event, some of the group who took part in the John O’Groats challenge, cycled the length of
Ireland from Mizen Head to Malin Head (370 miles) in 36 hours.
The Great Rugby Cycle 2020 will cover over 1000 miles in an anti-clockwise direction around Ireland in eleven days,
taking in some of the finest scenery Ireland has to offer. The peloton will be joined along the route by rugby legends,
sporting stars and celebrities from TV and Film to raise awareness and funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

My Name’5 Doddie Foundation: www.myname5doddie.co.uk
Doddie Weir, the former Scotland and British and Irish Lions rugby player, revealed he was suffering from Motor Neurone
Disease in 2016. From the outset, Doddie has been driven to help fellow sufferers and seek ways to further research into
this, yet, incurable disease.
My Name’5 Doddie Foundation was launched in November 2017 and its aims are simple; to raise funds to aid research
into the causes of MND and investigate potential cures and to support this affected by this devastating disease.
The vast majority of the funds raised by My Name’5 Doddie Foundation is invested into Motor Neuron Disease (MND)
research.

The Itinerary…

The cycle departs from the Stormont Hotel on Sunday 5th April and heads
along the Antrim coast through Co. Londonderry before reaching our
first overnight stay in Portstewart. Day two of the challenge continues
along the wild Atlantic way taking in some ‘hills’ of Co. Donegal and a
tough 102 miles before stopping in Gweedore for the night.

Day three is a nice gentle 85 miles into Sligo taking in the stunning sights
of Co. Donegal and the Atlantic Ocean. The peloton cycles 102 miles
from Sligo, through Co. Mayo and into Co. Galway on day four before
resting up in Galway for the night, where we hope to be joined by some
of the Connacht rugby players.

Day five has the smallest elevation climb as the group cycles a steady 95
miles from Galway into Munster territory via Limerick before arriving into
Newcastle West. Rest up as we tackle Moll's Gap or Céim an Daimh on
day six. Molls Gap is a mountain pass at the end of Killarney National
Park into Killarney in Kerry on the Ring of Kerry route, and offers views of
the MacGillycuddy's Reek’s mountains. The Maritime Hotel in Bantry is
the overnight stay where you can relax in the pool or treat yourself to a
SPA treatment.

The Itinerary…

Over half-way now as the peloton starts day seven from Bantry. The 83
miles today starts with the peloton heading south towards Ballydehob
before cycling East along the coast before arriving into Cork on Easter
Saturday and maybe a pint of the black stuff that night!

Day 8 of the challenge leaves from Cork on Easter Sunday as a nice
gentle 90 miles takes the group along the southern coast into Waterford
before resting up for the night in the Marina Hotel. Easter Monday is a
long 101 miles and over 2000 metres of elevation from Waterford
heading North into Dun Laoghaire just South of Dublin, where some of
the Leinster players and staff will join us for a beer.

The final two days of the cycle heads North from Dublin on the Tuesday,
with a smooth 72 miles into Meigh where the luxurious Killeavy Castle
Hotel awaits the weary legs as we recharge the batteries.

Day 11, the final day is a gentle 67 miles from Killeavy into Belfast. The
peloton follows along the side of Strangford Lough stops off briefly at the
Royal Belfast golf Club before arriving at the Stormont Hotel in time to
relax before heading to the Kingspan stadium for the ‘Rugby Live Quiz’…
