Hosting in Atlanta for the Big Game: Creating Magical Travel Powered by People Introduction Airbnb was founded in 2008 when, during a big design conference in San Francisco, hotels were at a premium and visitors from around the globe needed a place to stay. Airbnb co-founders Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia opened up their home to three guests, launching the Airbnb platform. To date, there have been more than 500 million guest arrivals in 193 countries and 65,000 cities around the globe. Since its launch, Airbnb has helped welcome visitors to big events around the world including the Olympics, PRIDE festivals, political conventions and more. During these events, home sharing not only expands available lodging options, but gives hosts the chance to earn extra income by sharing their home while helpings guests live like a local. Housing 1 Million Football Fans in Atlanta Atlanta is no stranger to welcoming big events to the City, having hosted the 1996 Olympics and Big Game in both 1994 and 2000. But as February 3 quickly approaches, housing is still needed for some of the nearly 10,000 volunteers and close to 1 million visitors1 getting ready to descend on Atlanta. And what’s unique about this year’s Big Game is that this is the first time Airbnb hosts have the opportunity to earn important supplemental income by sharing their homes on the platform. 1 https://www.ajc.com/sports/with-300-days-super-bowl-planning-intensifies/a4nh7dq1JVP1pzCTPIlXuO/
In the weeks leading up to the Big Game, hotel prices have exploded, according to Curbed, with, “dwindling options left as Atlanta prepares for its first Super Bowl in 19 years, and hoteliers are prepping to rake in profits of a tourist influx that’s estimated to see 1 million visitors across 10 days.”2 In fact, more than two years ago, hotel rooms were already being reserved by the football league3, and today, many of the 100,000 hotel rooms in the Atlanta area are already sold out or prohibitively expensive for guests looking to see the Big Game. Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau President and Chief Executive was quoted in July 2018 saying, “In downtown Atlanta, Midtown and Buckhead - all hotel rooms are essentially committed already.4” As early as September 2018, hotels were nearing capacity across the city5, with dozens close to the stadium having already sold out. And with the few rooms left in December expected to go for triple the regular rate,6 fans looking to travel for the Big Game once their team has been set can be challenging, to say the least. “Hotel prices have soared 146 percent for Super Bowl weekend7” Airbnb’s Partnership with Cities Around Big Events As part of our commitment to working with cities to support big events, we have taken a number of steps to educate and support our community, including: 2 https://atlanta.curbed.com/2019/1/17/18187015/super-bowl-liii-atlanta-hotel-prices 3 https://www.ajc.com/news/local/need-room-for-the-super-bowl-prepare-pay/17eWJVhmyGpHvqgUgaw0p O/ 4 https://www.ajc.com/business/super-bowl-prep-underway-atlanta-200-days-advance/RqmeO8G5Qlno4o WJFYsSqJ/ 5 https://www.11alive.com/article/sports/nfl/superbowl/looking-for-a-hotel-room-in-atlanta-for-the-super-bo wl-good-luck-with-that/85-598404477 6 https://www.hospitalitynet.org/news/4091151.html 7 https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/18/how-much-does-it-cost-to-attend-the-super-bowl.html
