AISM’s 10th ANNIVERSARY Matilda Project Illustration by Jack Paul Baking, 11 years, Asrama Desa Pukak, Sabah A Fundraising Project for the Children of Sabah
Message from the Principal T he Matilda project, the Australian International School Malaysia’s community project, was launched as a special focus for the AISM’s 10th anniversary celebrations. During 2010 various school charitable activities have raised money so that 28 rural Sabahan children can go to school. It is a project that is close to the hearts of students, parents, teachers, staff as well as other organizations who have pledged their support. I have had the privilege of meeting the children and the house parents at the Asrama Desa Pukak during the October holiday break. This joyous bunch of children are between the ages of 5 to 12 (primary school children) and their living conditions at the hostel were very, very basic. Their learning support workshops, with few resources, are held by the hostel staff after school. These children, from the remote the remote villages of Kampung Liposu and Kampung Kelobaan are the lucky ones as they have the ability to stay in the hostel, have regular meals and have a consistent education through the primary years. There are other children on the waiting list for this hostel who still have to make 3-4 hour walk to and from school each day. We have also visited the children’s primary school, Sekolah Kebangsaan Pukak, and met with the Principal, Mr. Rantai Gimbo, to explore ways in which we can establish a sister school relationship in the future. In this way we are able to change our patronage into a partnership. It was my great privilege to hand over a cheque for RM 138,000 during the school’s Christmas assembly, on behalf of the AISM community to the Good Shepherd foundation who are managing this project. The RM 138,000 contributed includes the Matilda project commitment for this year which is RM 113,400 (for sponsorship of the houseparent, hostel renovations and 28 individual child sponsorships for educational/ boarding expenses). An additional of RM 24,600 has been raised which will become a part of our commitments for next year and help sponsor the houseparents for year 2012. Our Matilda hostel children also had a Christmas wish list of 4 guitars @ RM250 each which we will be able to supply along with a Christmas present to the approximate value of RM30+ per child for our 28 children. This money came as a direct result from Year 8 fundraising and our special dress day for our Christmas assembly and is additional to the cheque already presented. The Director, Ms. Chin Poh Choo, said that these funds will allow the hostel to keep going for another year and is most grateful to the whole AISM community who have helped these children to attend school on a regular basis. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has worked hard to contribute to this cause. You have made a difference to the lives of the children in Sabah. They will have choice about how they construct their futures. Anne-Maree Armstrong
About Asrama Desa Pukak & The Children T here are 28 children from the rural villages of Kampung Liposu and Kampung Kelobaan, who live at or below the poverty line. They have little access to electricity or water and walk two and half hours over a hilly terrain to get to their school, SK Pukak. T he main objective of the hostel (Asrama Desa Pukak) which is managed by Good Shepherd, is to enable these children to attend school on a regular basis so as to raise their academic standards and complete their primary education successfully. This will give them the opportunity to attend secondary school and further education at a later date. Sekolah Kebangsaan Pukak
