Bosmere Community Primary School Best of Bosmere June 2021 Dear Parents/Carers, Welcome to the June issue of BOB. What an array of learning we have to share with you this month-children developing skills and learning knowledge that will be of use, not only as they travel their journey through education, but also for life as they grow! Enjoy! Mrs Green ☺ We try new things in Nursery Bringing Science learning to life in UKS2 In Science, UKS2 have been learning about the children circulatory system and here you can see them acting out the process, following the figure of 8. The children stopped at various points to explain where they were in the body using scientific language and whether they were oxygenated (oxygen present) or deoxygenated (oxygen removed) . As part of their topic all about food, Nursery children have been trying an assortment of vegetables. These included: leeks, swede, beetroot, bean sprouts and sweetcorn. There were mixed reactions-some children were reluctant to try, others tried them all! A bar chart was made to show their favourites, with sweetcorn coming out on top, followed by swede, with leek the least favourite. Fashion designers of the future in LKS2! In previous editions of BOB you will have seen the vibrant tie dye t-shirts children in year 3/4 have created and here you see the children in Redwood class proudly wearing their finished garments. The children’s final task was to create designs, choose and cut out their fabric-neatly and accurately-finally using running stitch to attach the designs to their t-shirts. The designs included footballs (can't think why) flags and initials. I think you’ll agree, they look fabulous!
We have super heroes in KS1! In Art, KS1 have started a unit of learning on Sculpture and Mixed Media. Based on the work of Roy Lichtenstein, children worked in pairs to create a composition with superhero figure outlines, splashes, action words, adding texture, definition and pattern to a piece. In the first lesson, children posed in a superhero stance for their partner to sketch and then they used pipe cleaners to turn their drawing into a three-dimensional form. How would you advertise for a prehistoric monster hunter? A Sewing Bee champion of the future! In English, LKS2 have started investigating the shape (the sections and content) of a persuasive job advert. Isla in Redwood has Beowulf has now made a cushion at home returned to for Stephie, her Sloth. Geatland and She linked her learning Hrothgar needs a as you will see, the new leader to help children in LKS2 have protect his Danish been sewing onto their tribe. They used an tie dye t-shirts. Isla has advert for a also used her Nanny's Prehistoric Monster sewing machine to make Hunter to discuss a pin cushion wrist band. the shapes for their writing. Redwood children are deciding which shapes make up the job advert for the Prehistoric Monster Hunter, next they are going to In total Isla has made a cushion, a pin cushion, wrist band and a write their job adverts for Hrothgar...we are thinking that he will blanket. Well done Isla! definitely need someone who has experience and training for such a role, but we are going to need to be very persuasive in our advert!
Collaborative learning at its best… Woodland Wednesday-learning together outside In computing, children in UKS2 have been working on their coding skills using Purple Mash: learning how to make Recently, Nursery children worked together to create and sequences of commands and repeat using the timer and repeat construct a beautiful nature mobile during their Woodland functions to design simple programs. They were very creative Wednesday learning. The children love to learn alongside each and worked excellently in their partnerships to explore other new other outside-visiting the woods whatever the weather! commands too, including adding sound and collision commands. Making music in LKS2 Defibrillator Fund Raising In LKS2, the children have been learning a song about kindness, One of our year 6 students is raising money to purchase a respect, friendship, acceptance and happiness-everything that defibrillator, and here’s why: we value at Bosmere! I decided to raise money for Christian Eriksen because he collasped whilst playing football in the Euros. They had to use a defibrillator to bring him back to life. I thought I could raise money for a defibrillator in case it happened to anyone else. I have enough money to get one and I have biked 30 miles out of 100 so far. They cost £1500 and I got that in 2 and a half weeks. I have 1 and a half weeks left to bike/run 70 miles. Wow what a lovely generous thing to do. Well done! Part of the learning was to learn how to play the Glockenspiel too. Children accompanied the song whilst playing their Glockenspiels-not an easy thing to do. Mrs Green and Mrs Mckeon had an argument! …well, not quite, it was very civilised really! UKS2 children invited both Mr Mckeon and Mrs Green to be interviewed to share their thoughts on children’s screen time use. Mrs Green took the position of promoting screen usage and Mr Mckeon took the stance of being against. The children asked great questions and really probed their thinking, taking lots of notes on Mrs Green and Mr Mckeon’s responses in preparation for writing their own balanced arguments.
