Nursery Curriculum Outline Spring 2020 Curriculum Intent Spring Term The children will have a clearer understanding about the changing seasons. They will be able to identifying features and make comparisons in relation to Winter With a focus on weather, animal habitats, materials, healthy food and clothing for example “What foods keep us healthy and warm in winter? Spring theme will enable pupils to observe and explore nature, identify and understanding life cycles.
Foundation Stage—Nursery Our curriculum is delivered through play based activities and active hands on learning. The children take part in self selected activities and adult led activities which are planned to match their stage of learning. Our themes for the Spring term are: Term 1 Term 2 Personal, Social and Emotional Development By the end of the Spring term the nursery children will have a clearer understanding of what it means to ‘learn’ and know that ‘Everyone has the right to learn’. They will have a clearer understanding of their feelings and the feelings of others. They will be able to demonstrate kindness and consideration of others for example, playing co-operatively. sharing and turn taking, making friends, developing independence and learning new skills. Communication and Language (listening, attention, understanding & speaking) By the end of the Spring Term (during child initiated play and adult-led activities) the children will learn new vocabulary and have a widening understanding of ‘How?’ and ‘Why?’ questions. They will continue to be encouraged to respond appropriately to simple instructions. The children will have ‘Show and Tell’ sessions alongside engaging and interactive ‘Story Sessions’ that will further develop the children's attention, listening and communication skills. Children will continue to be encouraged to respond to what they have heard, with relevant comments, questions or actions. Physical Development By the end of Spring Term, nursery children will be given the opportunity in PE lessons and in the outdoor nursery environment, to be able to develop their co-ordination and gross motor skills. They will be able to demonstrate their awareness of handling tennis rackets. They will be able to show their developing ball skills when hitting a rolling ball or bouncing ball. They will be able to demonstrate their increasing ability to stop safely on command with a football. They will develop an awareness of the effects of exercise on their bodies in addition to learning about healthy food choices.
Literacy By the end of the Spring Term the children will explore a range of sounds both aurally (hearing) and orally (speaking) in order to further motivate and develop their confidence in using their voice. Participation in engaging and interactive play based phonic activities will continue following the governments ‘letters and sounds’ program will support children to develop their ability to ‘tune into sounds’, ‘listen and remember sound’ and to ‘talk about sounds' they hear. Planned activities will focus on; Rhythm and rhyme– to develop understanding of words and syllables and Alliteration– recognition of words that start with the same sound. We will continue to focus on their understanding of what they have heard and understood in stories, rhymes and discussions. Parents can further support their child’s phonic skills by engaging in fun activities such as: Listening walks - encouraging their child to listen, recognise and identify sounds. Action Rhymes & Singing Songs- ‘If your happy and you know it”, Sharing books and stories daily– providing props such as puppets or silly voices Providing opportunities for their child to engage in meaningful writing, painting and draw- ing activities, e.g. making shopping lists– drawing/mark making items... Invitations, cards, maps... Mathematics By the end of the Spring Term the children will be able to identify numbers that have personal signifi- cance to them, for example their age, house number, ages of siblings etc.… The children will be using the language associated with describing and comparing quantities, m ore, a lot, few... In addition the children will be able to demonstrate their number skills by count up to 3, 5 or 10 using 1:1 correspondents (the ability to match an object to the corresponding number. ) Understanding the World By the end of the Spring Term the children will be able to talk about and share their own experi- ences and events of personal interest to them., for example family trips or celebrations, with in- creasing confidence. They will continue to explore the natural environment and develop their understanding by asking questions and making comments about what they have observed. The children will knows how to operate simple technological equipment such as the class computer, tablets or camera.
Expressive Arts and Design By the end of the Spring Term the children will learn new songs and explore the different sounds instruments make. They will have opportunities to investigate colour mixing and creating different textures. The children will continue to experiment and use a wide range of tools resources and materials, with a wide variety of media, when accessing the creative areas. Children will continue to take part in role-play with classmates to extend language and develop expression. Characteristics Of Effective Learning During the Spring Term we will be encouraging and looking to observe the children demonstrating the following characteristics: Playing and Exploring—Engagement Using senses to explore the world around them. Engaging in open ended activities. Taking on a role in their play. Seeking challenge. Taking a risk, engaging in new activities. Active Learning—Motivation Showing high levels of fascination. Not being easily distracted. Begin to show that more effort or a new approach will help. Being proud of ‘how’ they managed to achieve something.
