Meet the Team Carolyn Coverley – Mindfulness and Yoga teacher. Committee member of MYA and currently Chairperson and coordinator Carolyn has taught yoga and mindfulness on a voluntary basis to a variety of organisations including Brighter Futures, Young Minds and CAMHS, since retiring as a child and adolescent psychiatrist. Mindfulness - Carolyn has gained a Masters in Mindfulness. She has completed training to teach both the 8 week Mindfulness Based Living Course (MBLC) and the Mindfulness Based Living Course- Young Adult (MBLC-YA). She is listed by the UK Network for Mindfulness-Based Teachers and follows all their good practice guidelines for teaching mindfulness- based courses. Carolyn provides formal eight week mindfulness courses, bespoke courses, occasional day retreats and drop in sessions on a voluntary basis. Yoga- Carolyn has completed a 200 hour Hatha yoga teacher trainer course and is a member of Yoga Alliance Professional. She now mainly teaches yoga as a form of mindful movement, including working with the breath, body awareness and meditation based on visualisation. Tina Hess– Mindfulness teacher. Committee member of MYA and currently deputy chairperson and safeguarding lead. Tina has been practicing mindful meditation for over 20 years and teaching mindful practices in schools since 2006. In 2014 Tina went to study the .b Mindfulness in Schools teacher trainer programme to be able to deliver the .b curriculum to students. Tina has delivered the curriculum to children and young people from year 6 to Further Education students and is looking to provide teaching to Higher Education learners in 2020. Since then Tina has trained to teach the .b foundations mindfulness course for adults and currently runs this course for staff wellbeing at Highlands College for Education staff and other Government of Jersey staff. Tina completed her Masters in Applied Positive and Coaching Psychology with UEL and for her Research dissertation created an 8 week Positive mindfulness course to promote kindness and reduce bullying in establishments. This was piloted in a local primary school with positive results. Tina is passionate about the benefits of mindfulness to support mental health, meaning and flourishing and is working towards trying to bring more mindfulness into Jersey and into the islands Education Establishments as well as into the local community. Tina helped to set up the current wellbeing team for the Education department and supported student, staff and parent wellbeing and currently teaches on childcare course at Highlands college level 2-5, is a pool trainer and delivers safeguard training units and certification as a SPB pool trainer.
Meet the Team – Cont. Kate Howell – Yoga teacher. Committee member of MYA and currently Secretary Kate has been practising Bikram yoga on and off for 20 years. Her yoga practice saw her through several major life events; she learnt to bend so she doesn’t break. Faced with an empty nest at home and a desire to do something different after 26 years as a Science Teacher, she decided to undertake her 200hr RYT at the Yoga Skyros Academy in Greece in 2018;She has been teaching classes at Healthhaus and her own classes ever since. Kate is particularly interested in “yoga for life” and she offers Hatha yoga classes with a strong focus on aligning mind, body and spirit. She practices yoga to keep peace in her mind, strength in her body and love in her heart. Kate practices yoga, not to get better at yoga, but to get better at life. Sofia Silva- Yoga teacher. Committee member of MYA and currently Treasurer Sofia comes from Portugal and has been living in jersey for the last 17 years. She loves anything that enriches the mind, body and soul, she recently just completed “The Portuguese Camino” and loved every moment of her journey. She has been teaching Power vinyasa yoga since completing her teacher training in London in 2016 and since then is sharing her passion of Baptiste Power yoga methodology. Sofia believes that yoga is a journey to self-discovery a path that has been waiting to stepped in and will never end, as long you are ready to take the first step. Her classes are dynamic, fun and empowering, combining awareness of breath, movement and mindfulness.
Meet the Team – Cont. Steve Wharmby – Mindfulness teacher. Currently lead mindfulness teacher for MYA been teaching mindfulness in various contexts since 2010. This has included Dialectical Stev Steve has been teaching mindfulness in various contexts since 2010. This has included Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). More recently he has focused on teaching mindful self-compassion. He is a trained teacher in the Mindful Self- Compassion programme (MSC), which was developed by Researcher Kristin Neff and Psychologist Christopher Germer, and the teen version of this called Making Friends with Yourself. Steve currently works as a Primary Mental Health Worker for the Psychology and Wellbeing Service but previously worked as an Occupational Therapist within Adult Mental Health. Henrietta Brice-Smith – Yoga teacher. Currently media advisor and lead Yoga teacher. Henrietta has been practicing, studying and teaching yoga for over 20 years. She is a Yoga Elder with the IYN, a member of the BWY, and a Senior Dynamic Yoga Teacher, having recognised the intelligence of the body as the first and final authority of her teaching and using movement and the ‘Dynamics of Integrity’ as the core of her approach to teaching yoga posture practice. She strongly believes that the physical side of yoga is about what you can ‘feel’ in your body and not about what you can ‘do’. Safety is of paramount importance, and she teaches with great sensitivity to protecting the joints. Henrietta has extensive experience teaching people with a wide variety of ailments/conditions, and has studied Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology under the guidance of a respected surgeon from Berlin. She has completed Kinesiology TFH 1, 2, 3 & 4 with an experienced and knowledgeable teacher from Australia with whom she continues her studies in Kinetic Therapy.
