Undergraduate Scholarship Awards These are competitive scholarships available to math majors and non- majors with a strong concentration in math classes that are currently enrolled at KU. All scholarships are based on merit. However, some funds have restrictions based on level, major, gender, residency and financial need. These scholarships have been made possible through private donors who include alumni, friends and family of the Mathematics Department. Scholarship funds are managed by the KU Endowment Association on behalf of these generous donors. Charles H. R.D. Brown Award for Undergraduate Excellence This award is established in memory of Professor Robert Brown by gifts from his family and friends to provide awards for a senior majoring in mathematics who has demonstrated the most impressive overall achievement in the field of mathematics during his or her undergraduate career. Professor Brown was a faculty member of the Department of Mathematics from 1963 to 2009 and served as Associate Chair and Director of Undergraduate Studies from 1980 to 2001. He was the recipient of KU’s Chancellors Club Career Teaching Award for 2000. Recipient: Pierce Giffin Kansas Algebra Program Outstanding Assistant Award This award is presented to undergraduate and graduate assistants in the Kansas Algebra Program for their outstanding contributions in teaching, tutoring and extra duties. Graduate Summer 2020 Scholarship Awards These are competitive scholarships available to math graduate students currently enrolled at KU. This scholarship is available for math Ph.D. graduate students who have passed both qualifying exams. This scholarship is awarded so that advanced graduate students can concentrate on research and/or prepare for their preliminary oral comprehensive exam. Graduate Summer 2020 Research Assistants Scholars Faculty who have research grants can choose to support their graduate students with summer support. The assistantship is awarded so that students can concentrate on research and/or prepare for preliminary or oral comprehensive exams. Summer research awards were made by grants held by Professors David Nualart and Xuemin Tu. Recipients: Sefika Kuzgun Panqiu Xia Jinjin Zhang Paul F. Conrad Graduate Scholarship This award was established in 2008 in memory of Professor Conrad by gifts from his family and friends to provide awards for deserving graduate students in mathematics. In 1981, Professor Conrad was named the first Henry J. Bischoff Professor of Mathematics at KU. He retired in 1992. Recipients: Hamid Mofidi Amanda Wilkens Ralph Byers Student Award This award was established in 2008 in memory of Professor Byers by gifts from his family and friends to honor his long-time commitment to numerical analysis. This award is presented to outstanding graduate students in numerical analysis. Professor Byers was a faculty member of the Department of Mathematics from 1987 to 2007. Recipient: Aaron Barrett
Charles J. and Mary Pat Himmelberg Graduate Student Award This award is established by a gift from the family of Charlie and Mary Pat Himmelberg. The award is used to support graduate students with merit in the Mathematics Department. Professor Charles Himmelberg was a faculty member of the Department of Mathematics from 1959 to 2005 and served as Chairman from 1979 to 1999. Recipients Jayan Mukherjee Wesley Perkins Debaditya Raychaudhury John Bunce Memorial Award This award was established in 1992 in memory of Professor Bunce by gifts from his family and friends to provide awards for deserving graduate students in mathematics. The award commemorates his extraordinary concern for the welfare and intellectual development of graduate students. Professor Bunce was a faculty member of the Department of Mathematics from 1970 to 1991. He served as director of graduate studies. Recipient: Panqui Xia Florence Black Award for Excellence in Teaching In December, 1960, Paul Endacott made a contribution to the Endowment Association from which an annual Florence Black Award for excellence in teaching on the part of graduate students in the Department of Mathematics is made. This gift to the department was most appropriate in giving recognition to Professor Black’s many years of service in teaching at the University of Kansas. G. Baley Price Award for Excellence in Teaching Each year since 1970 the Mathematics Graduate Students Association has presented an award for excellence in teaching to the faculty member who displays the greatest ability and effectiveness in teaching graduate mathematics courses. In 1976, in order to honor an individual whose teaching has exemplified the spirit of this award, the MGSA elected to change the name of the annual award to the G. BALEY PRICE AWARD. The recipient of this award is elected by the mathematics graduate students themselves. Those faculty who are eligible must have taught a regular class in a Math course numbered 700 or above during the current academic year and have not won the award sometime during the last four years. Recipient: Mathew Johnson Max Wells Teaching Award This award was established in 2002 in recognition of outstanding or exemplary teaching in the field of mathematics by a KU faculty member in the Department of Mathematics. Max Wells received a B.S. degree (1969) in mathematics from KU and a M.S. degree (1971) in mathematics from the University of Michigan. He received a M.D. degree from KU in 1974. He is currently residing in Austin, Texas, after a successful career as a pathologist. Recipient: David Nualart Morrison FoundationTeaching Award This award was established in 2008 by the Don and Pat Morrison Foundation to recognize outstanding teaching in mathematics.
