Robotics Competition In early February, the high school STEM robotics team competed at the Kent State First Tech Challenge Competition. This event was the first competition for the robotics team since before the pandemic began two years ago. The competition consisted of 6 qualifying matches where the luck of the draw matches you with alliance partners. The goal is to be in the top set of teams in order to advance to bracket play. The CHS team finished in 12th place but was selected by another robotics team to be one of their alliance partners to enter the winners bracket competition. In bracket play, the CHS team advanced to the championship match and finished in 2nd place. Congratulations are extended to team members Alex Rife (Captain and Lead Designer), Brock Wood (Lead Builder), Zach Baker (Lead Programmer), Curtis Stringham, Julia Derrer, Ace Derrer, and Nathan Agler on an outstanding finish. Special thanks to the advisors Rhonda Hildebrand and Joe Spallino for leading the team to victory. Skills USA Carpentry Competition On Tuesday, February 15, Logan Taylor earned 1st Place in the Skills USA Carpentry Competition held at Local 351 carpenters training facility in Rossford. Upon arriving at the competition, Logan dropped off his tools and immediately went into orientation. From that point on, his CHS instructor (Mr. Lashaway) was not permitted to interact with Logan. When the competition began, Logan was handed a set of blueprints. For ten minutes he was able to look at the blueprints, ask any pertinent questions, and take any notes. Once the blueprint reading was completed, Logan had four hours to construct as much of the building as he could accomplish in that predetermined amount of time. The construction was a combination of both residential and commercial carpentry such as drywall, trusses, stairs, stud walls, as well as different tool applications and uses. Winning 1st Place, Logan earned a gold medal, toolbox and a $200 Home Depot gift card. Logan now advances to the State Competition on May 2 and 3, in Columbus. Congratulations Logan and good luck in Columbus. Winter Athletic Awards Night The winter athletic awards night will be held on Tuesday, March 22. The evening will begin at 6:00 pm with the general assembly in the CHS auditorium. Athletes that received any academic, league, district or state awards will be recognized in the general assembly. After the general assembly, each team will disperse to individual rooms to distribute individual and team awards. Powerlifting Ready for State Meet The CHS Powerlifting team is having a strong season. Forty lifters workout three nights a week to prepare for competitive meets. They have competed at Madison Plains, Bradford and South Central High Schools. Clay also hosted the 4th annual Raising the Bar meet in January. Each lifter competes in the bench press, squat, and deadlift. Those three scores are summed to create a total score for awards. The team had a great day at their most recent meet. Out of the 100 possible scores, lifters set 62 new PR’s! Clay had 25 lifters travel to South Central where the boys team took 3rd Place and the girls team took 2nd Place.
The meet recognizes 3 boys and 2 girls with BMI champion trophies for the strongest pound-for- pound lifters by divisions. Clay lifters won four of the five trophies! Freshmen Gabrielle Rivera, senior Aleah Segura, senior Anthony Derby, and sophomore Jake Saunders were recognized as the meet’s strongest out of 140 lifters. The award is determined by taking their total lift divided by their body weight. Luke Purtee and Deakon Rivera were crowned champions of their individual weight class but lost the BMI award to their teammates. The team will be competing at Northwood High School on March 5, and will travel to Kenton High School for the State Meet on March 12. Good luck to all our hard working lifters. February Youth of the Month Congratulations to CHS Senior, Maura Carr, for being named the Exchange Club of Greater Maumee Bay February Student of the Month. On Thursday, February 24, Maura attended a breakfast to receive her award with her parents and Mrs. Turner. Maura was selected as the recipient for this award based on her volunteerism, leadership, responsibility, essay criteria, and overall commitment to Clay High School. Earning this award, Maura now advances in the district competition and can earn additional accolades. Congratulations Maura, thanks for working hard for our community and CHS! Robotics Club Finishes in 1st Place This past weekend, the high school robotics team travelled to Wapakoneta and competed in the First Tech Challenge competition. Struggles were real all day, but it all worked out in the end. The team slid into the final alliance captain and selected our teammates well: Higgs Boson and Quantum Leap. The team entered the semi-finals as underdogs but swept the semi-finals to proceed on to the finals. In the finals, the robotics team ended up sweeping the finals by defeating the #2 alliance and ending up as Champions! Congratulations to the team of Alex Rife, Brock Wood, Zach Baker, Curtis Stringham, Julia Derrer, Ace Derrer, and Nathan Agler. Good luck to the team as they now advance to the Virtual State Competition. All Star Driver Education In-person driver training classes will resume at CHS at the end of March. All Star Driver Education is conducting a driving course at Clay from March 28 – April 7 immediately after school from 2:45 – 6:00 pm. Only 15 students will be permitted to take the in-person course. Please contact 1-800-967-7719 or www.allstarde.com to register or for additional information. All questions and concerns should be directed towards All Star Driver Education. Student of the Month Congratulations to Kayli Hierholzer for being named the Genoa Bank/Metro Press February Student of the Month. Kayli was featured in the February 28 edition of the The Press newspaper. Currently, Kayli has a 4.3 cumulative GPA and ranks 6th in her class. She is a
member of the National Honors Society, Aevidum, and Volunteer Focus. Kayli is the daughter of Jeff and Ethel Hierholzer. Kayli plans to major in nursing to become a neonatal nurse. She is undecided on which college she will attend. Keep up the great work, Kayli! Limelighter Musical The CHS Limelighters will present the delightful hit musical Big Fish on April 1 & 2 at 7:00 pm and April 3 at 3:00 pm. Adapted from the celebrated 1998 novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton, Big Fish the musical celebrates the extraordinary in everyday life. Big Fish tells the story of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest… and then some! Edward’s incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him – most of all, his devoted wife Sandra. But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, doesn’t think there’s any truth to the extravagant tales of his father meeting witches, kissing mermaids or joining the circus. When Edward’s health begins to decline, Will must decide whether to accept his father’s wild stories as truth or risk losing what he is searching for. Overflowing with heart and humor, Big Fish is an endearing, heart-touching musical that reminds us why we love going to the theatre – for an experience that’s richer, funnier and bigger than life itself. Reserved seating tickets are available at www.claylimelighters.org. Adult tickets are $12 while Senior Citizen and Student tickets are $10. Only General Admission tickets will be available at the door. Ordering a Yearbook and Senior Baby Ad Information The deadline to order the 2021-22 yearbook is May 20, 2022.
