The Talon Farwell Area High School Newspaper Volume 23, Issue 3 January, 2022 Mr. Andy Frisch Earns STEM Star Award To honor the hard work and dedication K-12 educators make in STEM education, Saginaw Valley State University and MiSTEM East Central Michigan Region recognize educators and staff with the STEM Star Award. One of this year’s recipients is Andy Frisch. Mr. Frisch has been teaching Science and Math at Farwell High School for 24 years. His passion for his field is evident to every student that has participated in one of his courses. Mr. Frisch said, “I have always used demonstrations to lead my lesson plans. These demonstrations have since evolved into phenomenon. Phenomena are key to a STEM education and NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) pedagogy. STEM education has always been a nature practice within my teaching style.” After about 15 years of teaching and becoming very comfortable in his craft, the positive feedback he was receiving from his students lead him to reach beyond my classroom. He said, “My students would say that more people should experience what you are demonstrating and explaining to us. And so, I set out to do just that. I began to seek additional ways to reach out to the public at large and other science teachers. The intent is always to show the connections between STEM topics and the real-world. I had the fortunate opportunity to be motivated by Niels deGrasse Tyson and the RET Summer program at Central Michigan University. Dr. Tyson encouraged me to write. He told me to get published, let people know what you are doing inside the classroom. The people will listen because the title of ‘High School Science teacher’ as it has a certain respect within a community. I have hence written and had over 50 articles published.” Mr. Frisch is pleased with the experiences the RET program at CMU provided him. It gave him a wealth of knowledge and experiences in the areas of engineering and research. This is where he was able to refine his STEM education pedagogy. Upon reflection of his classroom experience, he said, “I truly enjoy teaching using STEM pedagogy. It has reinvigorated my enthusiasm for teaching the sciences and mathematics.” Recipients of the STEM Star Award are awarded funds to help benefit their STEM education programs and concerns. This will be a direct benefit to our students here at FHS. Congratulations Mr. Frisch on this well- deserved award. Madison Travis Signs with LCC Stars for Softball Madison Travis, the daughter of Michelle and Jason Travis, signed with the Lansing Community College Women's Softball Team to pitch and play outfield for the LCC Stars. A triple threat athlete, Madison is a four-year participant in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She has several accolades based upon both her athletic talent and her stellar academics. In volleyball, Madison was named MIVCA Academic All State and first team all-conference in the Jack Pine. Previously, she was recognized as JPC second team. In basketball, she was first team all-conference and honorable mention All-State two years in a row. In softball, Madison earned JPC honorable mention. In addition to high school sports, Madison plays for the Mid Michigan Heat Fastpitch Team. Athletics has always played a huge part in Madison's life. She enjoys the competition and strives to improve each and every day. When asked what softball has meant to her and the opportunities she is looking forward to at the collegiate level, Madison said, "Softball has influenced my life greatly. I have played since I was 10, and I've made many friendships and connections. Softball has helped me grow as an athlete and a person. I am looking forward to growing as a softball player in college and experiencing all the new opportunities it brings me." In addition to athletics, Madison is part of the Early College Program, the FHS Wood Shop Program, and National Honor Society. While she is involved in numerous community service projects, one of her favorites is fundraising and getting donations for the Aiden G. Fair Memorial through "Strikeouts for Aiden." This fall, Madison was voted by her peers to serve as the Farwell High School Homecoming Queen. Madison, a high honors high school graduate, will be pursuing a degree in Kinesiology at Lansing Community College. Her ultimate career goal is to become a physical therapist.
