                              Drama Department News
On Friday 7th September a select group of Year 10 – 13 students were lucky enough to attend ‘Mrs
Krishnan’s Party’ by the ‘Indian Ink theatre Company’ in The Theatre Royal at the TSB Showplace.
We were treated to an intimate, interactive and moving drama about change and having the courage
to be truthful with yourself. The audience were provided with bindies, coloured scarves and balloons
to help us get in the mood……and yes there was food too. We all got to taste the yummy dahl
cooked by the actors during the show! What more do you need for a successful party. Thank you to
all the beautifully behaved students who chose to attend. It was a pleasure getting some ‘culture’

                             Maori Science Expo 2018
Last month a group of twenty Y9 & 10 Maori students were treated to a day out, enjoying some
wonderful Science, Engineering and Technology experiences at the WhyOra Maori Science Expo at
Pukekura Functions Centre.

Learning experiences were provided by the WhyOra: Maori Health Careers Programme in
conjunction with WITT Institute of Technology and Victoria University. These highly engaging
workshop style classes included flying drones, using VR technology, Code-breaking, 3D Modelling,
a Stardome Experience and a CPR Resuscitation module run by the School of Nursing.

WhyOra and Spotswood College are committed to partnering with young Maori that are considering
a career in S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and supporting them throughout
their high school journey. For more information contact – Whaea Wendy Eynon through the school
office or visit the WhyOra website www.whyora.co.nz.

International News
As always the International Department has been busy since our last newsletter.

A group of our students joined the school team and travelled to Rotorua for the Tough Guy/
Tough Girl Challenge which by all accounts was a lot of fun! They were then able to take in some of
the tourist activities on offer in Rotorua … thank you Mr Gayton.

Staff attended a workshop for New Plymouth schools run by SIEBA (Schools International
Education Business Association) to assist us in preparation for our annual attestation to NZQA. The
attestation is a mandatory requirement for all signatories to the Code of Practice for the Education &
Pastoral Care of International Students and requires us to evaluate and reflect on our policies and
practices to ensure we are code compliant and adhering to best practice across our programme.

We were excited to host a group of ten Japanese Agents to our school. The tour was facilitated by
Education NZ & International Education Taranaki and they were also joined by Mr. Hiroki Morita who
is Air NZ’s Business Development Manager based in Tokyo. This was a unique opportunity to
showcase our provincial schools and the Spotswood International Programme. The agents really
enjoyed a session chatting with our five Japanese students.

Next week, we will welcome to Spotswood College Ms. Barbara Burger, who represents Carl
Duisberg Centre, one of our German agencies. It is always great to be able to meet and finally put a
face to the name at the end of many email conversations! She will also have the opportunity to catch
up with Cosima Ellerbrock, her student currently studying here.

Sadly, we will be saying goodbye to another group of students at the end of term 3.
Kaho Miyamoto will return home after three terms with us. Kaho has really embraced her time here
and is the best possible example of a student making the most of all opportunities on offer! She has
also been volunteering at The Rumpus Room each Friday helping with the play programme for pre-
schoolers. Kaho will complete a final year at school, then head to university to study midwifery.
Our one term group from NZIIU Tokyo will also be heading home – we wish Hayete, Kanami and
Ena safe travel.

Inter-school debate

On August 17th, the Spotswood College Debating Club competed in an inter-school debate with
Francis Douglas Memorial College. Our junior team consisted of Mika Doron, Lace Wegman-Hall
and Jazmine Murray as speakers and Brooke Kennedy and Jolee Brougham as researchers. The
juniors won their debate where they argued against the moot that this house would ban alternative
medicines.

Our senior team, comprised of Ethan Griffith, Kelsey Win and Tristan Francis, argued for the moot
that this house believes that Trump has compromised the prestige of the American presidency. Alt-
hough our seniors were well-prepared and gave great speeches, they were out-debated by FDMC
on the day and came in second best.

Censor for a Day

30 of our Year 12 and 13 English students had the opportunity to view a film before it was publicly
released and take part in the process of classifying the film with the guidance of the Office of Film
and Literature Classification. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the screening of Spike Lee's new film,
Black Klansman, and took part in a vigorous debate as to what the film should be classified as.
