A Message from the Director The Romeoville Fire Academy began operations in 2006 with one simple mission: To provide high quality training courses, which are delivered by competent and experienced instructors. It is our priority to put the needs of our students first and to use the latest techniques and philosophies. Firefighting Courses Basic Operations Firefighter Academy The RFA is proud to offer our entry-level firefighter certification. This program will cover all the cognitive objectives required by the OSFM, as well as perform- ing and testing on all practical hands-on skills, including extensive live-fire evolu- tions. Firefighting Courses Advanced Technician Firefighter This 40 hour course will give the students all of the information, objec- tives, and practical exams they will need to obtain their Advanced Tech- nician Firefighter certification. The curriculum focuses on the experi- enced firefighter who can lead rather than be led. Instruction is shared between classroom presentations and in-depth hands-on evolutions on all topics required by NFPA 1001. Firefighting Courses Engine Company Operations This three-day skills course will instruct students on how to function more effi- ciently as part of an engine company. The course will cover the engine company philosophy and their roll at working fires, as well as other emergencies. With a good balance of classroom and hands-on time, including extensive live-fire evolu- tions, students will review topics such as engine company size up, company rolls and assignments, hose loads and hose pulling evolutions, tactics and strategy, fire attack, and much more! It’s a course no firefighter should be without! This course is not available for certification through the OSFM. Proudly held in alliance with RICO Fire Rescue (ricofirerescue.com) This intense four-day 32 hour course provides students with the solid foundation and skills needed to work as a member of a rapid intervention team on the fireground. The course is de- livered with continuous updated hands-on techniques and maneuvers, as well as live fire- ground scenarios in three progressive areas: Firefighter Survival, Firefighter Rescue and Rapid Intervention Operations—and all the while being delivered by leading instructors from around the nation. Technical Rescue Course Rope Technician The 40 hour Rope Technician Course is taught to NFPA standard 1670 and 1006. The course covers advanced rescue techniques and equipment utilized during high angle res- cues. The course meets all IL OSFM certification standards and the state exam will be administered on the last day of the course. Technical Rescue Course Confined Space Operations This state certified 40-hour course will educate students on confined space emergencies. Students will receive classroom instruction on the OSHA confined space regulations, hazards, incident management, etc. The rest of the course will have students performing practical evolutions with supplied air systems, PPE, patient packaging, ropes & rigging, me- chanical advantage systems, and scenarios in actual confined spaces. The state exam will be given on the last day of the course. Cost: $ 675 Date: October 18-22, 2021 Prerequisite for certification: Rope Operations 9
SPECIALIZED RESCUE COURSES Trench Rescue Operations This state certified course will provide students the skills needed to per- form trench & excavation rescues. Students will receive classroom in- struction on OSHA trench regulations, soil types, hazards, collapse patterns, etc. The rest of the course will have students performing hands-on evolutions on securing the scene, hazard analysis, constructing shoring systems, patient packaging, and more. All evolutions will be performed in live trenches, giving the most realistic training available The state exam will be given on the last day of the course. Cost: $ 675 Dates: June 21-24, 2021 Trench Rescue Technician This course will build on the trench rescue skills that the rescuer already possesses. The course will provide the student with hands-on training on more advanced skills such as shoring systems for “L” and “T” trench- es and constructing whaler shoring systems. Students will also receive instructions on how to operate in these complex trench rescues with specialized tools and equipment such as air knives and vacuum trucks. All evolutions will be performed in live trenches, giving the most realis- tic training available. The state exam will be given on the last day of the course. SPECIALIZED RESCUE COURSES Vehicle & Machinery Operations This state certified 40-hour course will give students instruction on performing extrications and rescues involving vehicles and machinery. Classroom instruction will address vehicle anatomy, vehicle component hazards, the latest information on SRS systems and hybrids, incident command, trauma, and tools & equipment. The rest of the course will be composed of practical evolutions involving vehicle stabilization, tools, extrication techniques, door, roof, and glass removal, and lift- ing techniques. The curriculum has been enhanced to include lessons in machinery hazards and rescue techniques, ranging from farm equipment to industrial ma- chinery. SPECIALIZED RESCUE COURSES Structural Collapse Operations This 40-hour course trains the rescuer in collapses dealing with wood-frame and light masonry structures. Students will receive classroom instruction in building construction, destructive forces, collapse patterns, collapse operations, incident command, and more. The remainder of the course involves hands-on skills and evolutions on light-frame collapses, upright and raker shoring, tunneling, search operations, incident command, and much, much more. The state exam will be given at the end of the course. Cost: $ 1200.00 Dates: August 23-27, 2021 Structural Collapse Technician This 40-hour course will continue to build on the rescuer’s skills learned in Col- lapse Operations. Students will receive additional classroom instruction in ad- vanced concrete & masonry building construction. The remainder of the course will focus on hands-on field evolutions working with cutting reinforced concrete, safely raising concrete slabs, rescue tunneling, working with advanced rescue tools, and directing and operating within the vicinity of a construction crane. The state exam will be given at the end of the course. SPECIALIZED RESCUE COURSES Water Rescue Operations This 32-hour four-day course is the first in the OSFM Water Rescue certification series. Water Rescue Operations introduces the firefighter to the hazards and safety procedures needed to perform water rescues safely and efficiently. This course emphasizes all training, PPE, and operational standards from NFPA 1670. This class introduces students to topics including ice formation and hazards, equipment selection, medical considerations, and the application of proven rescue methods and techniques. Fire Officer I & II Courses Instructor I Instructor I is the base course for any student aspiring to be an instructor in the fire service, whether it be instructing drills at their home department or as an as- sistant instructor in OSFM certification programs. Fire Officer Course Fire Department Incident Safety Officer This important class will be taught to the NFPA 1500/1521 standard and will cover the roles and responsibilities of individuals assigned as the incident safety officer. The course will cover topics such as incident action plans, overall incident strategy, risk management, firefighter safety, reading smoke, and building construction. Hazardous Materials Courses Hazardous Materials: Operations The Hazardous Materials First Responder / Operations level course is a 40-hour course that provides those personnel, who are, or will be operating as a member of an emergency service organization, the basic skills needed to evaluate and work defensively at an incident involving the release of hazardous materials. Students will receive classroom and hands-on instruction in basic hazard and risk assess- ment techniques, knowledge of selecting and using proper personal protective equipment, performing basic control, containment, and/or confinement opera- tions within the capabilities of the resources and PPE available, & proper termina- tion procedures. Hazardous Materials Courses Hazardous Materials Technician The Hazardous Materials Technician program is an 80 hour course that meets the NFPA 472 standard. The Hazardous materi- als technician responds to releases or potential releases of haz- ardous materials for the purpose of stopping the release or per- forming rescues. E.M.S. Courses Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) Our EMT course is fully compliant with the standards set forth by the Illinois De- partment of Public Health curriculum. Upon completion of the course and the state exam, students will be licensed as an Illinois EMT. All classroom topics will be reinforced by extensive hands-on skills that will give the students the confi- dence to perform as a pre-hospital care-giver. Students will also be required to complete clinical time in a hospital emergency department and in-field ride time on Romeoville Fire Dept. ambulances. Off-Site Courses The RFA can offer just about any of our courses at your department or location that you specify. We can also offer them to your department in a nightly or weekend format to fit into your schedules. Please call for information. Customized Training The RFA can design a course for your department to meet your needs for recruit training, officer develop- ment, auto extrication, pump operations, EMS, truck & engine company operations, haz-mat, or anything else you need! Payment Information If your department is making payment: Your department can prepay by submitting a purchase order number prior to the course, otherwise they will be billed at the conclusion of the course. If you are making payment out of pocket: Course tuition must be paid in full the first day of the course. Students who do not make payment will not have their paperwork sent to the state and their names will be removed from the course roster until payment is made. Credit card payments can be made during the class or prior to the course over the phone by calling (815)372-4042. Cash or personal check payments can also be made during the class. Deposits & Pre-payments: Students must make a pre-paid deposit of $ 200.00 for the Basic Operations Firefighter Academy & RICO course, and $ 490.00.00 for the EMT courses to secure their slot in the course. Registration slots are not secure until deposit is made. Students from out of state or country must pay class tuition in full prior to the class. Deposits & tuition are fully refundable provided the student cancels from the course within the appropriate time frame, typically 72 hours before the course and one week for BOF & EMT CPR courses require full tuition payment prior to registration being complete.
