WELCOME TO X-ADVENTURE DUNSBOROUGH 2021 After being forced to cancel the 2020 X-Adventure due to COVID-19 we are super excited to proceed with the 2021 event and can’t wait to welcome you to beautiful Dunsborough for a weekend of adventure. The global pandemic and recent lockdowns have made us all appreciate exercise, health and fitness more than ever. Combine that with an increased desire to seek fresh air and time in nature and you soon realise that events like X-Adventure are part of the antidote. So if you’re coming to X-Adventure Dunsbourgh you’re on to a good thing and we hope you enjoy another awesome X-Adventure race weekend – we certainly will! The Rapid Ascent team WELCOME FROM: TOURISM WA ACTING MANAGING DIRECTOR, DERRYN BELFORD Tourism WA is a proud supporter of the X-Adventure, Dunsborough through its Regional Events Scheme. The scheme was created to support smaller and emerging events in regional Western Australia to boost tourism and increase community vibrancy. The Regional Events Scheme also plays an important role in positioning Western Australia as an exciting destination to visit and a great place to live by showcasing and promoting a region’s unique and diverse attractions. To help regional communities rebuild their economies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, 77 regional events across the State have been funded through the 2020-21 Regional Events Scheme. This includes the Regional Aboriginal Events Scheme which has a funding pool of $150,000 exclusively allocated to events delivering Aboriginal activities and experiences. When people travel to regional areas they spend money which creates jobs and supports businesses. In 2019-20 visitors spent $9.0 billion across the State, 49 per cent of which was spent in regional areas. Events play an important role in this, and Tourism WA is proud to support a range of sporting, cultural, arts and culinary events across the State, to give people a reason to travel, encourage them to stay longer, and do more while they are here. We hope everyone enjoys this event and takes the time to explore the South West region. DERRYN BELFORD ACTING MANAGING DIRECTOR, TOURISM WA THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BUSSELTON The City of Busselton welcomes spectators and participants to Dunsborough for X-Adventure 2021. After an interrupted last year, we are very pleased and proud to once again support and host Australia’s largest off-road triathlon, which takes in some of the State’s most picturesque coastline and has proven to be very popular with both visitors and locals alike. The Meelup Regional Park and surrounds is the perfect setting for this nature-based event. It is home to a huge variety of native flora and fauna species and boasts some of WA’s most beautiful beaches. The X-Adventure offers a truly spectacular way to experience the unique beauty of the park’s bushland and rugged coastline. Busselton, Dunsborough and Yallingup are friendly and bustling towns offering great shopping, relaxed dining, and fantastic entertainment. We also encourage you to visit some of the many wineries, breweries and tourism offerings our region has in abundance. I extend my congratulations to event organisers and wish participants and all those involved with the X-Adventure a fantastic race day. Happy racing! COURSE DESCRIPTIONS X-ADVENTURE SHORT COURSE Race Start, Saturday 10th April 10:30am All competitors in all categories (teams and individuals) will start together. START LOCATION: At the Old Dunsborough Boat Ramp, at the end of Finlayson St. The entire swim is outside the swimming enclosure. COURSE MARKING: The run course will be marked with red arrows and pink surveyors’ tape, and the MTB course will be marked with blue arrows and blue surveyors’ tape. 750m Dunsborough Lakes Ocean Swim The swim leg will commence with a deep water start for all swimmers. The deep water start will be just in front of the Old Dunsborough Boat Ramp, and feature a 60m wide start line allowing plenty of space for all swimmers. See the map below for the swim course - swum in an anti-clockwise direction. Exit the DUNSBOROUGH L A K E S water up the boat ramp and run into T1. • Swimmers are encouraged to spread yourselves along the entire 60m start line so you have plenty of space, all positions on the start line will be fair with no preferred ends. • Be aware of the buoys marking the course as indicated on the map – it is up to you to make sure you know where to go. Transition 1 (T1): Old Dunsborough Boat ramp car park. Swim > Run • The TA will be divided into individual and team zones. Individuals please pre-place your running gear in the designated area. Leave your wetsuit / swim gear in the same area after changing. • Running gear may be dropped off after 8:30am on Saturday and swim gear must be picked up before 2:00pm • Individuals - remember to put on your run number plate after the swim • Team runners - must wait for their team swimmer in the designated teams area inside the TA and transfer timing chip there – NOT outside the TA or at the entry to the TA. 6.2km Coastal Run Runners exit the TA and must remain on the sand or rocky coastline for the next 2.5km until Castle Rock. When you reach Castle Rock you turn left and run back towards Dunsborough on the coastal walking track. Continue along the marked trail as it turns right, away from the coastal track and ultimately along the edge of the golf course and then into T2 on the 18th fairway. Run leg: • Keep an eye out for course markings at all times (red arrows and pink tape for the short course). • Runners must remain on the sandy beaches and rocky foreshore from T1 through to Castle Rock. • There will be NO water points along the course (this is an X-adventure race!). • Runners should be aware that the first half of the run course includes some very technical running over boulders, along soft sandy beaches and across slippery coastal rocks. • The run course is not closed to the public and you may encounter other trail users Transition 2 (T2): Dunsborough Country Club – 18th Fairway. Run > MTB • The TA will be divided into individual and team zones. Individuals please pre-place your MTB and gear in the designated area. Leave your running gear in the same area after changing. • T2 will be open for MTB gear to be dropped off after 8:30am on Saturday and run gear must be picked up before 2:00pm on Saturday. • Team riders must wait for their team runner next to your bike in your numbered area and transfer timing chip there – NOT outside the TA or at the entry to the TA. 11km Mountain Bike Riders must walk their bike in the TA and then set off on the marked course adjacent to the golf fairways as it winds its way on a mix of single track and double track through the golf course towards the water tanks at the top of the hill. Continue fol- lowing the marked course as it twists and turns along a flowing 11km loop within the Golf Course area. Riders must remain alert and watch out for course marking at all times as it is a very wiggly course and it is easy to get onto the wrong section of track if you are not aware of where you are. After finishing the loop all riders come back past the transition area and ride directly through to the finish line on your bike. p10 2021 X-Adventure Dunsborough event program
The MTB leg: • The course comes very close to itself on numerous occasions with riders at different parts of the course being very close to one another. Riders must follow the course markings at all times to ensure you follow the correct route. • There are no water points on the MTB course - riders must carry their own hydration / nutrition the whole way. • Slower riders must give way to faster riders by making space for them to pass. Faster riders MUST NOT just barge their way past a slower rider but alert them that you are there and then wait until called past. • Riders should be aware that the course is quite technical, twists and turns a lot and includes a lot of loose pea gravel, rocks, obstacles and logs. It is all ridable, but does require technical skill on a mountain bike to do so quickly and ef- ficiently. We will make A and B lines over the more challenging obstacles - A line is more technical, B line is easier. Finish by riding your bike across the finish line • Riders continue on their bikes directly through to the finish on your bike • Please keep the expo area clear of bikes once you have finished by racking them up or putting them back on your cars. p11 2021 X-Adventure Dunsborough event program

Leave your wetsuit / swim gear in the same area after changing. • Running gear may be dropped off after 6:00am on Sunday and swim gear must be picked up before 1:30pm. • Individuals - remember to put on your run number plate after the swim • Team runners - must wait for their team swimmer in your designated teams area inside the TA and transfer timing chip there – NOT outside the TA or at the entry to the TA. 12.9km Coastal Run Runners exit the TA and must remain on the sand or rocky coastline for the next 2.5km until Castle Rock. Runners then skirt around the rock on the Coastal Walking Track with a section of 2-way course with returning runners, before returning to the rocky foreshore and continuing towards Meelup Beach and a water point at the 4km pt. At Meelup Beach runners turn away from the coast and continue along a 3.6km inland loop that will see you running up a 4WD track to Sheens Rd where you turn left and then descending down a long section of single track back to Meelup Beach back past the water point at the 7.6km pt. Runners then head back towards Dunsborough on the beautiful coastal footpath, following the marked trail until it turns away from the coast at the 10.8km pt just before the houses and then finally descends into the transition area on the 18th Fairway of the Country Club golf course. NOTE: Runners must remain on the left hand track during the final descent to th eTA - the right hand track is used by MTB riders! Run leg: • Keep an eye out for course markings at all times (red arrows and pink tape for the long course). • Runners must remain on the sandy beach and rocky foreshore from T1 through to Castle Rock, and after the Castle Rock diversion to Meelup Beach. • There will be a water point with cups set up in the Meelup Beach Car Park at the 4km and 7.6km pts. • Runners should be aware that the first half of the run course includes some very technical running over boulders, along soft sandy beaches and across slippery coastal rocks. Despite being (only) 12km long we think the fastest runners will still take approx 60+mins. • The run course is not closed to the public and you may encounter other trail users Transition 2 (T2): Dunsborough Country Club – 18th Fairway. Run > MTB • The TA will be divided into individual and team zones. Individuals please pre-place your MTB and gear in your designated p16 2021 X-Adventure Dunsborough event program
area. Leave your running gear in the same area after changing. • T2 will be open for MTB gear to be dropped off after 6:00am on Sunday and run gear and bikes must be picked up before 1:30pm on Sunday. • Team riders must wait for their team runner next to your bike in your designated area and transfer timing chip there – NOT outside the TA or at the entry to the TA. 20km Mountain Bike Riders must walk their bike in the TA and then set off on the marked course adjacent the golf fairways as it winds its way on a mix of single track and double track through the golf course towards the water tanks at the top of the hill. Continue follow- ing the marked course as it twists and turns along long sections of single track and the popular ‘Brown Street’ trail network in Meelup Regional Park and the Dunsborough Country Club golf course area. The course will come back near the Transition Area at the 12km pt before heading back up towards the water tanks. After finishing the loop all riders come back past the transition area and ride directly through to the finish line on your bike. The MTB leg: • The course comes very close to itself on numerous occasions in the single track so riders must follow the trail in front of them and keep a careful eye out for all course markings. • We strongly encourage riders to take all the water they need when they start the ride - it can get hot out there. • Slower riders must give way to faster riders by making space for them to pass. Fast riders MUST NOT just barge through. • Riders should be aware that the course is quite technical, twists and turns a lot and includes a lot of loose pea gravel, rocks, obstacles and logs. It is all ridable, but does require technical skill on a mountain bike to do so quickly and effi- ciently. We will make A and B lines over the more challenging obstacles - A line is technically more difficult but faster and B line is the easier option. Finish by riding your bike across the finish line • Riders continue on their bikes directly through to the finish on your bike • Please keep the expo area clear of bikes once you have finished by racking them up or putting them back on your cars.
